Morrissey And The Smiths Seeking New Publisher

(Radio.com) Looking for a new job? How about one as Morrissey's publisher? The music publishing deal between Warner-Chappell and the catalog of material written by Morrissey solo and the Smiths has come to an end after 30 years, according to a post on True to You, a Morrissey zine.

As such, the post solicits that other publishing companies who are interested in the catalog should email, indicating that Warner-Chappell's contract will not be renewed.

Bands commonly rely on their music publishing companies to license songs for use in commercials, films, TV, compilations, web series and other similar ventures on their behalf. They also do all the paperwork, registering copyrights on new material, filing performance and mechanical copyrights to collect royalties from societies like ASCAP or BMI and auditing record label bookkeeping to collect unpaid royalties for song use.

The biggest responsibility for a publisher of this catalog, however, would be monitoring worldwide use of Morrissey and Smiths songs to make sure they are not exploited without a license. more on this story
