Singled Out: Rick Kelly's Dream of a Better Life
. When I started to write Dream it was just the thunk-ing of the baseline that I was obsessed with. The lower end of the keyboard freed me to think higher thoughts as it was. I was just in the beginning of writing again after what had been too long of a spell, and I found all of this rage and confidence pouring through me at the same time-very instinctual stuff that was coming out as me versus craft. The song started to take shape very quickly as a statement song. I am here and I have paid my dues and I love what I have and what I do and bet that you will too. I think in every mans life there are times to pause and reflect, and this song was that song for me at the time. It's a very hopeful lyric and has some gospel influences that come out in the end. I love performing this song and singing it. It's about persevering through doubts and skepticism and coming out as a rock solid person with character and something to say at the end of your trials- which is what everyone aspires for themselves ideally. This song gave me the momentum and the strength to write the other 11 or so songs which would turn out to be my debut album, under the same title. This was the bedrock soul searching, man screaming atop a hill song that allowed me to focus on lighter themes and melodies. I needed this kind of song for my album and I think it's pretty cool how it showed up at the right moment. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about Rick right here!
