Love Vs. Nirvana Round II & III

12-20-01 antiGUY

The battle over Nirvana continues. Last week former Nirvana members, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, filed suit against Kurt Cobains widow Courtney Love seeking to gain control over the rights to Nirvanas catalog of recordings. The former members contend that Love has blocked the release of a Nirvana boxset and is unfit to handle her obligations in the partnership formed between them and Love to manage the control of Nirvanas music.

Courtney Love fired back at Grohl and Noveselic by issuing an open letter to Nirvana fans, "What should have been a private business negotiation has become a very public lawsuit," says Love in her letter. "There are many issues that were left unresolved after Kurt's death that we're finally trying to put in order. Other parties have talked about finding 'a personal sense of closure' with Nirvana's music. That's exactly the opposite of what should happen. We want to celebrate Kurt's life and music and make sure Nirvana finds as large an audience as possible. We want future generations of music fans to give the band its rightful place alongside the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Bob Dylan."

Love further adds, "Kurt Cobain was Nirvana. He named the band, hired its members, played guitar, wrote the songs, fronted the band onstage and in interviews, and took responsibility for the band's business decisions." She claims that Nirvana was never a three-way partnership between the members of the group. She asserts that Cobain refused to sign a partnership agreement with Grohl and Noveselic and that she was forced to sign an agreement with them after Cobains death due to a Washington state law that would have given the rights to Nirvanas music to Grohl and Noveselic.

Now Kurt Cobains mother has entered the skirmish, siding with Courtney Love. Cobains mother, Wendy Fradenburg Cobain O'Connor, issued a statement Wednesday showing her support for Love. In her statement she attacked Novoselic and Grohl going as far as calling them liars and crooks.  She contends that before his death, Kurt was concerned that the other members of Nirvana were out to rip him off.

Grohl and Noveselic say that they formed an equal partnership with Cobain and that all members contributed long hours to bring Nirvana success. OConnor claims that Novoselic and Grohl never contributed to the songwriting in Nirvana, and called their claim of an equal partnership, ridiculous beyond comprehension.''

For the record OConnor does admit that Love has been furnished her with financial support.

At press time, Novoselic and Grohl have not issued public statements concerning these latest developments in the case.
