Holmes Review

by Sherrill Fulghum

.
There is a growing trend today for artists - especially those new to the business - to get exposure by having their music featured on television programs and in films. Holmes is no exception. Holmes - who is Ray Shakked - has seen his music appear in the films "Poseidon" and "The Devil Wears Prada" and on television shows "The OC", "Sex in the City", "Without a Trace", "Independent Lens", and "Nip/Tuck"; as well as, a Nissan car advertisement.

Last year the Los Angeles resident released a five song EP of original material. Holmes' music which seems to mix the old with the new says that his moods and influences change with the music.

Holmes uses modern electronic instruments and devices but often his music has the feel of the old style rock and roll.

"Stop Go" Groove Gravy Records/2007 - This year Holmes released his debut full length album "Stop Go". Among the 12 tracks are the five songs found on the EP. Holmes is an artist whose music would fit in with that heard on commercial radio today but does not have that cookie cutter sound about him. The opening track has some interesting piano rifts and Holmes shows that a banjo really can fit in with pop music. Like a baseball player who is called a five tool player when he is able to perform several aspects of his profession exceptionally so is Holmes Ray Shakked - what would be termed a multi talented individual who writes, sings, and performs well.
