Rick Webster - The Rick Webster Project
The most noticeable influence on Webster's sound is Steely Dan, and the song that displays this influence most is "Write It For Me," which has a bumping R&B feel, complete with jazzy guitar and punched in horns. The guitar solo on this one sounds straight out of classic Steely Dan 70s albums, such as Aja. There is also a touch of that duo's influence on "Grapevine Stories" -- albeit to a lesser degree -- for a song that combines Steely Dan with a touch of Chicago soul from the 60s.
Vocalist Wilson is at her best on "Long Way Home," a moody ballad supported by electric piano. Wilson can come off sassy one moment, and warm and inviting the next. She's clearly an excellent choice to vocalize Webster's musical vision.
Much the way Steely Dan did it in the 70s, Rick Webster has found a way to blend jazz elements with pop music in such a way that it makes jazzy music so much more palatable even for non-jazz fans. This also makes The Rick Webster Project one successful project.
