Satellite Sky - Magnetize

Siblings Pete and Kim Kicks are Satellite Sky and they operate as a guitar and drums duo. Sound familiar? Unlike the similarly aligned White Stripes who introduced themselves as brother and sister in their early days, the Kicks really are from the same gene pool. There are a couple of songs on this six-cut EP that recall the bluster of the White Stripes in places, including the slightly bluesy garage-rocker "I Don't Wanna Go" where Pete sings in manic tones reminiscent of Jack White's, albeit with an accent that gives away the fact that the Kicks are from Australia (they live in L.A. now.) "Lightning in the Room" is a Strokes-like rocker embellished with organ fills and a synth buzz that complements Pete's guitar work while the rhythmic "Tell Me" is a pop rocker that hints at a fondness for both the New Wave and glam eras. With layered vocals set to a mid-tempo shuffle, "Rivals" is the effort's smoothest cut and probably the record's best bet for a hit single. This is not the first release from Satellite Sky but it can be considered the band's introduction to American audiences, and a promising one at that.
