Whale Fall - The Madrean
It's easy to hear the influence of another famous Los Angeles band, Love, on songs like opener "The Dawn Thief," especially with this track's delightful trumpet part. With "I Shall Sail No More (No More Shall I Sail)" reveals the act's pretty side with its echoing electric guitar/keyboard sound and overall dreaminess. This tune also includes sweet trumpet, by the way.
Be forewarned that all of these tracks are long, with the exception of "On River On Route," which clocks in at 'only' 4:34. The rest of the release is made up of six, seven, eight and nine minute recordings. "On River On Route" makes up for its relatively short length with a moving moodiness, however.
The test of any instrumental music album is how well it keeps the listener's attention and The Madrean does just that, bringing the listener back into its imaginative world again and again.
