Tombstones in Their Eyes - A Higher Place

by Kevin Wierzbicki

Fans of stoner rock with psychedelic overtones will love A Higher Place as Tombstones in Their Eyes tap into a sound that often recalls Crazy Horse. A perfect example is the opening cut of this 6-song EP, "I Know Why." Fuzzed out guitars reign throughout the song, including on a mid-song solo, and the song's slow tempo makes the cut mesmerizing; lyrics are cryptic (the listener never quite knows the "why" in "I know why') and it's all presented in such a way that the listener should expect an earworm effect. "I'm Not Living in Fear" is another smoldering, desert-rocking groove with otherworldly vocals that seen to originate in the ether. With its steady beat and luxurious fuzz guitar lead "Dreaming" is perhaps the craziest of Crazy Horse-like cuts with EP closer "This River" running a close second.
