Def Leppard Want To Rock Again?
(Gibson) Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell recently shared his band's ideal future plans in an interview with Radio Metal. After the release of the live album, Mirrorball, this year, Campbell said he's looking forward to getting back in the studio in 2012.

"It's our intention in 2012 to make another studio album and hopefully we'll lean a little bit toward the rock side of the spectrum." Campbell then addressed the idea that some fans would like Leppard to make an album akin to High 'n' Dry. "I mean it's our intention to try and get back some of the flavor, but I think it would be wrong to try and make an album that sounds exactly like High 'n' Dry," he said. "What was really good about High 'n' Dry was that it really showcased the influences of rock. But that's only part of the influences of Def Leppard.

"The band is also very melodic in terms of our influences and many people would say that the real Def Leppard sound was from Pyromania and onward. There was a fusion of [these] rock elements and the pop sensibilities. That's always been what we tried to achieve when we write songs and go to the studio, to balance these two elements. There's a percentage of our fans that really want us to just get back to the rock thing and we're very aware of that, but I don't think that's the majority of the Def Leppard fans." more on this story

Sammy Hagar Sees Inevitable Van Halen Reunion
(RockAAA) Sammy Hagar's busy with Chickenfoot these days, and Van Halen are busy with original singer David Lee Roth, but Sammy thinks things could change at some point in the future.

"Absolutely," said Hagar about the possibility of working with VH again. "I'm not predicting it. I just say someday. We made too good of music together, with Eddie and I in Van Halen, we had such a great thing for a long time.

"When it went sour, it wasn't just because of us. There was a lot of outside forces. Our manager died and a new guy came in, and he just totally divided the band and conquered us, you know?!," he continues. So I think there will come a time where Eddie's gonna wake up and go, 'Hey, man, I miss being friends with Sammy,' if nothing else, or, 'I would love to make that music again, or play those songs again.' 'Cause they have no choice they've got Sam or they've got Dave; they can't find a new guy they already tried that and it didn't work. So it's inevitable." more on this story

"Besides this year being Metallica's 30 year anniversary," he continued, "for us and the fans, which is amazing; not only that, but the Big 4 on one stage is amazing. I never thought that it would ever happen. Now is the right time. Soon behalf of Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica, we need to come out and play a song together to represent the Big 4 is strong and heavy music is alive and well in Milano, Italy." Jon Anderson Vs Yes
(Rock News Desk) Ex-Yes singer Jon Anderson says his former band don't have lives but adds reunion show might be possible one day. He's still angry over the events which led up to his being replaced by Benoit David in 2008; without, he says, even being told.

"People get into that place where they don't care about people. To them, it's just business," Anderson tells Rolling Stone. "I'd been coughing so much that the only time I wasn't coughing was on stage. I just needed a break but the guys were upset about that.

"They didn't tell me anything; they were just off and running." He's also critical of the non-stop approach Yes put into their career, playing as many as six shows a week: "I would never do that kind of tour. It's stupid. But some people haven't got lives, I suppose they want to be on the road all the time. more on this story

Why Paul McCartney Turned Down Weird Al
(Gibson) Longtime vegetarian and animal rights activist Paul McCartney turned down a song parody request from "Weird Al" Yankovic.

According to the Daily Express, the musical comedian wanted to parody McCartney's "Live and Let Die" as "Chicken Pot Pie" but McCartney refused permission for the Wings track to be used.

The musical comedian told ESPN's The B.S. Report, "He didn't want a song used in any context that would be supposedly promoting the consumption of animal flesh... It's a valid reason and I get it. And I hate it when people put him on the list of humorless guys, because that wasn't the case at all. In fact, he said, 'Think of any other subject and I'm happy to O.K. it'." more on this story

Death Cab for Cutie Orchestra?
(Gibson) Death Cab for Cutie are mulling over the idea of touring with a string section. Billboard.com talked to guitarist/producer Chris Walla about adding some other instruments to the live mix.

"The idea is still on the table," Walla said. "It would be really fun to take Magik*Magik Orchestra out. But unfortunately, it is kind of nightmare to try and figure it out."

Magik*Magik Orchestra contributed heavily to the band's latest album, Codes and Keys. They also helped the band perform material from the album on VH1 Storytellers.

"It's sort of turned into the Polyphonic Spree dilemma," Walla joked. "You can make a living or you can play with an orchestra. They're totally mutually exclusive you almost can't do one and the other. But, I do think that we'll be able to do some shows with Magik*Magik somewhere at some point, even if it's not a full tour." more on this story

YouTube Resurrected Journey?
(Rock News Desk) Journey mainman Neal Schon made his smartest move ever when he hired fan Arnel Pineda to front the band, says former member Gregg Rolie.

Filipino Pineda got the job in 2007 after Schon saw YouTube videos of him performing the band's songs in the style of classic-era singer Steve Perry. And Rolie, who co-founded the band with Schon but left in 1980 just before Perry took them to new heights, says their latest move couldn't have worked out better. "I like Arnel I met the guy and he's a great guy," He tells Artisan News. "They got the chance to change his life and his family's life. If you've been to the Philippines you'd know what I'm saying: it's amazingly poor.

"It's the smartest thing Neal ever did, finding him on YouTube and making a story out of it. I'm glad for him and I'm glad for the band it's a whole resurgence for Journey." more on this story

New Member Inspired Red Hot Chili Peppers Album Title
(Rock News Desk) The Red Hot Chili Peppers decided to call their new album I'm With You after new guitarist Josh Kilnghoffer scribbled it down and flashed in front of his bandmates' faces at a moment's notice.

But frontman Anthony Kiedis says they didn't really know what the title meant when they picked it and they certainly didn't expect the reaction they've had from fans.

Klinghoffer, who replaced guitarist John Frusciante in 2009 after he elected not to return following the Chilis' two-year layoff, says: "It came almost out of nowhere. But it seems pretty open, pretty apropos to where the band is." Kiedis adds: "The first time I heard a non-one-of-us mention it, it gave me the best feeling you could ever imagine. Unbeknownst to me the news had hit the radio. Some kid came up to me and shook my hand, and he said, 'I'm with you.' I was like, 'Why are you saying that? Where did you hear that?' He said, 'I'm with you!' It was a great feeling." more on this story

The Day Bruce Springsteen Was Number One In The U.S.A.
On this day in 1984, Bruce Springsteen went to no 1 on the U.S. album chart with Born in the U.S.A. The album went on to spend a total of 139 weeks on the U.S. chart. It is also one of three albums (Michael Jackson's Thriller and Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814) to produce seven Top 10 U.S. singles. Gibson takes a look back:

There are few stylistic changes more jarring than the one Bruce Springsteen made between 1982's Nebraska and 1984's Born in the U.S.A. The first is essentially an album of demos, recorded without the E Street Band; the second is as pop-oriented as "the Boss" ever got, with the addition of synthesizers and bright, radio-friendly arrangements.

While some have seen Born (which went to #1 on the Billboard charts on this day in '84) as a reaction to the starkness of Nebraska, the fact is that many of the songs on both albums were written and even recorded concurrently. You could say that these two wildly different works are something akin to two halves of a whole. more on this story

Singled Out: Priory's Kings of Troy
Today Greg Harpel from Priory tells us about "Kings of Troy" from their brand new self-titled album. Greg wrote this out based on a band-wide conversation about the song. Here is the story:

Our track, Kings of Troy, has taken one of the more dramatic rises to power on the record. It sat as one of our B song ideas for a long time until the eve of taking it to the studio. There originally were two vignettes in the arrangement that always seemed to distract, a downward spiral following an unworthy honky tonk throwback.

But if there's anything we've learned as a band it has been to trust our gut reactions, if we're not interested, no one else will be either. So we went on to a kind of rearrangement that has become a successful method in songwriting for us while creating new material.

We plugged in new melodies where choruses traditionally repeat, layered hooks, and gave the song a dramatic instrumental narrative with introduction, climax, and epilogue. Rather than an ABABCA sectional arrangement, its ABCDAEFG. We've been told before that the album plays more like a musical than the traditional rock album.

The end product is something that is engaging, requiring an active listen. For us as musicians, this process is more interesting but more of a challenge. We become department heads of sonically polarized stage wings.

Thematically the song is the idea that the person whom you love is constantly being pursued by others, a constant siege from which you always defend. The lyrical ideas follow the instrumental arrangement, a balance of stoic charge and playful disarming.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
