May 2000 - WHY I HATE
MTV AND PEOPLE AS A GENERAL RULE
As a general principle, I hate MTV and I hate
people. Let me explain. Most people are brainless sheep when it comes to
music, and MTV only strengthens this problem!
Ok, here's the deal. Ever wonder why MTV
generally only shows little clips of videos during the day?? Well, it's
because their core audience has the attention span of a mentally ill, hyperactive
monkey! They can't sit still for more than 30 seconds, and they damn sure
don't have the attention span to sit through an entire three to four minute
music video!!! Not even for N Suck!
The problem I have is when a band I like
or a song I like makes its way to MTV. An example; PODs' "Southtown". This
video is usually only on LATE at night (the only time I'll even consider
watching MTV). BUT, somehow, I see more and more mindless drones going
out to buy the CD, just to "..get that Southtown song, the video rocks!".
They don't care about the band, they just want that fucking song!!!
They're are a couple other artists that
I just can't listen to anymore because of MTV and there followers; Limp
Bizkit and KoRn. Once upon a time, when MTV or radio wouldn't TOUCH either
one of these bands I liked them...they were cool to me. Now? Well, somewhere
along the way, KoRn sold out and forgot about the most important part of
the business, THE MUSIC, and Fred Durst all of a sudden became the most
self centered and egotistical human walking the planet!
I can listen to both of these bands first
albums, but, not that much, because at some point I hear a song that someone
just jumps up and says "I love that song!" and it makes me change to something
else. I do that because five minutes earlier this same person had just
gone through a steady progression of "The Thong Song" and the latest N
Suck song.
I'm not real sure what the point of this
rant is...I'm sure you're thinking the same thing...but, basically, I'm
trying to say that there is a TON of great music in the world that isn't
on MTV 24/7..keep this in mind, just because Carson Daly never interviewed

Okay, here we go. I'm going to try to explain this as clear as possible. The whole phenomena of Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, Korn, Godsmack, Primer 55, Powerman 5000, Coal Chamber, Linkin Park, Nickelback, P.O.D., Slipknot, Crazy Town, Disturbed, Cold, and so freakin many more buttrock bands that I have written down (my hitlist), this list grows daily. I have noticed that most, if not all of these bands, have at one point been called Hardcore music. And also, they are said to incorporate "rap" in their music. I want to try and get this all straight. They are not Hardcore bands, nor do they produce any credible rap music within their music. This genre of music grows at an ever increasing rate. All of the new MTV buttrock bands coming out sound exactly the same. And of course it is about the money and being popular, and doing what is "cool" because MTV decides what is cool in our culture. And why do we even call it MTV any more? It is not "Music" Television anymore, at all. Even the whole thing with Rap and R&B music coming out on MTV today, IT'S NOT R&B, AND IT SURE AS HELL ISN'T HIP HOP! R&B, or Rhythm and Blues as it once was, is something totally different as to what people think it is today as according to MTV standards. The same goes for Hip Hop/Rap music. Big Pimpin my freakin a$$, you fake. Anyway, I'm trying not to get all flustered about this. It's hard to remain calm. MTV destroys realness in the music. Back to the subject of "Hardcore" on MTV. It's not Hardcore. As an active supporter and muscician within the Hardcore scene for 12 years, and I speak for us all who hold Hardcore true to our hearts, it is appalling to see some parachute-pants kid walking around, talkin about, "Yeah, I listen to Hardcore." His interpretation of what Hardcore is, as all the other countless number of mindless, robotic, plastic followers of the MTV mastermind, is a false interpretation. Don't get me wrong, it's all a style of music, yes. But please don't call it Hardcore. It just is not. The same goes for metal, and its many forms, like Death Metal, Grindcore, Black Metal, and what have you. Slipknot is Death Metal? Give me a freakin break! I remember hearing Carson Daly say on an episode of TRL with Limp Bizkit as the special guests, Carson made the comment after showing one of their videos that, "Yeah, if you're into the underground Hardcore scene, you should definitely check them out. Limp Bizkit, ladies and gentlemen." Just the fact that it's on MTV, and emphasized by the fact that Carson Daly used Limp Bizkit and Hardcore in the same sentence ruined EVERYTHING! So please, if you want to check out some real Hardcore, do a little bit of homework. Trace some origins, and then see where it is today in terms of the whole Metal-core, Tough Guy, Old School, Youth Crew, or whatever else you want to call its subgenres. It's a totally different style of music and life that you live. It is an attitude. It's something to live by. It's venting through your instruments. Hardcore is life, not money and big business. In the words of legendary and deceased Raybeez (rest peacefully) of the New York Hardcore band Warzone, he said it best: "In our minds, and in our hearts, we feel that Hardcore should stay out of big business, and stay in the streets where it belongs. All you kids out there, ALWAYS KEEP THE FAITH!" Thank You, I hope you understand.

POD is no where near as good as the deftones, not even close, first off, deftones are not rap rock. sure, they rapped a little on ther first album, but that doesent make them rap-rock, POD sucks ass

Oh yea, i almost forgot. You should check out Mtv2 if you want to see POD on in the middle of the day. Even if they are just christian rock's answer to the Deftones. M2 plays all types of music, even 80's hair metal.

What is your definition of "selling out", and why has korn and/or limp bizkit done such a thing? I'm sure that if I were a musician in the "industry", i wouldn't worry too much about what the fans think, or make music to cater to anyone. Good artists make music for themselves and don't care what the latest trends are. I think fat mike of NOFX put it best when he said "i'm here for me not you". and of course they aren't going to play POD during valuable air time during the day. that would take time away from the newest aguilera video that could get some 14 year old girl to shell out $18.99 to buy that CD just for one song. It's good marketing.

Doc, you're on the right path! HOwever you shouldn't hate these poor little fools that choke their meniscule chickens every time Spears or N'Suck's visages rape the tv screen. YOU SHOULD try to save them. Offer them wise insight! recommend music more tasteful and intelligent! Damnit man I understand! Corn and Blimp Liskit are of the same feather, I CAN't LITEN TO ANY OF THEIR MUSIC! And in a few years another batch of idiots and monkey kids will come along and fill their shoes, they're interchangeable (JUST LIKE A FUKKING MASCHINE). HOnesty is what must be stressed! NOt posturing! Not electronics! PURE HEART AND FUKKING SOUL! MTV has its diabolic vice-grips on the music industrey--no one can refute that. HOWEVER, if this countries great revolution teaches you anything, HEART BEATS NUMBERS! What music needs is a new breed of musicians! New songs! NEw stories! NEW LOves! New HAtes! We must rise against the tyranny of MTV and radio and trash it's rotten no-good a$$ into oblivion, without directly attacking it, grant you. But by simply making an alternate route to true artistic expression will draw a line in the sand and say "who ever is for free and honest music...cross this line." And they will cross, my friend. Watch them.

I just want to say right off that you disgust me. Everything you say is negative. You have no appreciation or respect for artists and VJs on MTv who work their azzes off to provide entertainment for us "hyperactive monkeys". And I CAN sit through a whole video. EmpTV has really lost it way, once heralded as a break through in presenting the new format of singles with videos it's now just a debut platform for the pop market. How can they call themselves a music channel when all they do is hawk the same trite s**te over and over again, even when not even the f**king radio is playing it.
My solution, ignore it like I have been for the past 10 years of interest in music, my only time I've ever REALLY watched it was when in Dublin, you think USA MTV is bad ohhh you shld see European (read English) MTV......SClub 7 and steps - yuk!

I agree with Dr. Fever..people sit and watch MTV so they can be told what to like. its pathetic and sad...when i have nothing more to do i sit and watch MTV but loose intrest when i see the girls standing out side with undersized clothes, and a banner that reads "We love you carson." it reminds me just how said is this world? There is a song that comes on MTV once and awhile that is pretty good. But people need to learn how to think for themselves and stop this worshiping MTV crap.

They had NIN advertised for the all access
week bull crap, its reruns of footage they played months before AND it
has the worst audio job. It was all live perfomaces and none of that "behind
the scenes" green room stuff. I was very angry and what outraged me more
was the 3 hour Nsync and Britiny spears stuff got reruned all day and was
played during the day and not and 1:30 in the morning. MTV can go to hell,
I hate them. Carson Daly needs to go away along with everything else

umm, i was sittin here reading
these comments and i realized something. i think that i like the way music
is. i dont care to listen to britney spears or any other music that wasnt
written by the performer, in fact i pretty much hate it. but the way i
see it is that as it stands, music is gonna be what it is. i like having
an additional reason to listening to the music that i do. i love to listen
to punk, i just started listening to emo. im a fan of blink 182 (even before
they were "famous" i guess) and i listen to jimmy eat world. theres a lot
of good stuff out there. i think that punk has some of the most meaningful
music i can find anymore. is that bad? i dont know. does it make a difference?
yes. that is why i listen to it. people will listen to what they want.
sad as it is. there are more people out there who are "brainwashed," as
i read in some other people's comments, who like all that "teeny bopper"
crap. let em listen to it. take pride in the fact that you care about music
enough to voice your opinion. so here is my point. listen to what you like
and dont be afraid to listen to new stuff. thats one of the greatest things
about music now. finding new things. discovering new artists for yourself.
be happy that youre the only one out of your friends who've heard of "jets
to brazil" (a emo band i think) or that you saw korn during their first
show ever. but dont think youre better than other people for it. because
once you do that youre no better than the so called "money grubbing mtv
artists". oh, by the way, i think mtv ruins any credibility any band has.
if i ever see jimmy eat world on mtv, i would lose it. i lost a lot of
respect for blink when they came out with the video for "whats my age again?"
thats just how things go i guess. i had to find a new punk band. i found
it, "no use for a name", good good stuff. well anyway this is a damn novel.
so im gonna conclude this with my agreement with shroomdevil about how
to get your video on tv. my advice to my friend is that if youre ever in
a band, be like NOFX and tell mtv to f#$% off. thank you, good night.

about MTV. I can say that I never watch MTV. I only watch rock Show on
Vh1 once and awhile. I listen too the metal radio on my tv as a aid to
hear new albums.But I also disagree. See yeah it is bad that the guy becomes
a fan just because of one song but the thing is, that is also another way
of becoming a big hardcore fan of the band.See when I hear a song from
an band on an album I may like it but I would not buy it unless I hear
more songs from the album, then I will buy it.I think MTV does suck,but
this goes to what I said about Metallica, they hated Metallica before.
Now MTV loves them and Metallica loves them back.Everytime Metallica makes
a album, MTV is all over it.But I guess the bottom line is that MTV is
the downfall of music because it is bias, they only like the bands that
give them better ratings and more money.Of course like always that ismy
opoinion, I am not copying Denis Miller so you can get that out of your

I am sickened by all this
"pop" music.What the f*ck happened??Once upon a time,there was this magical
idea that you could WRITE YOUR OWN song and be succesful based on actual
talent,not how good you looked.It's sad to think that musicianship and
songwriting currently have no meaning whatsoever.There are millions of
talentd bands out there that won't ever be on MTV just because they're
not sure they'll make a billion dollars off of them.Just imagine if a bunch
of musical geniuses like Dream Theater were popular.People wouldn't watch
a fashion show.They would watch art.Thats what music is all about:Artistic
Expression.But it seems that has been long forgotten.Now as long as you
can shake your ass,sample somebody else's song,and say "uh.yeah.baby,baby..."
you'll be the next big thing.Is this what the world is coming to?
