The third time was really the charm as this film outdid the first two films in the series. The series debut, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," made an impressive $88.4 million debut in November 2001 and the second film, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," continued the box office magic with $88.4 million opening weekend in 2002.
Only one other film has had a higher three-day opening, Spider-Man ($114.8 mil). "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" replaces "The Matrix Reloaded" ($91.8 mil) for second place honors.
In the meantime, Shrek is still bringing them in. While it now holds the No. 2 box office spot after two weeks on top, Shrek 2, brought in another impressive $37 million. The eco-disaster film The Day After Tomorrow landed in third place by making an addition $28.1 million this past weekend.
