(Kayos) On May 16, Eagle Vision, a wholly owned subsidiary of Eagle Rock Entertainment, will release (for only $11.98) the Culture Club ‘80s hysteria in the form of a DVD entitled Live In Sydney. The 15-song, 77-minute concert—making its DVD/VHS debut—comes complete with a television news “featurette” on the band that succinctly underscores the sociological import of this band to its time. Live In Sydney holds up remarkably well as a nostalgic, R’n’B-fused revue to the cult of personality. In 1984, you couldn’t escape Boy George. The androgynous singer was ubiquitous that year, having major hit singles on both sides of the Atlantic, album sales in the millions, and a “Best New Artist” Grammy for his band Culture Club. The platinum Colour By Numbers—perfectly epitomizing pop music circa ’84—was #1 in 50 countries. In the midst of the craziness, the paparazzi, the magazine covers and the tabloid sensationalism, Culture Club went Down Under like a tornado. Australia had never seen anything like it. Televised live all over the continent from Sydney in front of a wildly enthusiastic audience, the show was the perfect vehicle for the supremely telegenic Boy George and his brand of soul. 1) Take Control 2) Mister Man 3) I’ll Tumble 4 Ya 4) It’s Miracle 5) Karma Chameleon 6) Black Money 7) Love Twist 8) Do You Really Want to Hurt Me 9) Church Of The Poison Mind 10) Victims 11) Time (Clock Of The Heart) 12) Miss Me Blind 13) White Boy 14) That’s The Way (I’m Only Trying To Help You) 15) Melting Pot
