(Gibson) Come next February, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder or Coldplay's Chris Martin might be thanking the Academy.

Both rockers have written original songs for films this year, and those songs are among the 41 that have been shortlisted for the Best Original Song category at the 2011 Academy Awards ceremony. The list will be whittled down to no more than five entries when nominations are announced in January.

Vedder wrote a tune for Eat Pray Love, while Martin penned "Me and Tennessee," a country song, for Country Strong, which stars his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow. Other potential nominees include Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never" (from The Karate Kid), Randy Newman's "We Belong Together" (from Toy Story 3) and Metric's "Eclipse (All Yours)" (from The Twilight Saga: Eclipse). more on this story
