Circle Of Unexisted - Crossroads

.
Circle Of Unexisted is what The Cure might have sounded like, had Robert Smith been smitten by krautrock and much more industrial music. Many of the tracks on Crossroads have doom-y, gloomy bass lines so closely associated with early The Cure albums, such as Pornography. Instead of Smith's girlish whine, though, this Russian collective (Well, I'm not so sure all Russians appreciate being called 'collectives' anymore) puts noisy percussion and clank-y melodic lines over their depressing grooves.

This release is not actually all new music, but a compilation of a few EPs worth of music, as well as compilation tracks and music not yet on full-lengths. These tracks are experimental --at least compared to the music that gets played on modern radio -- yet still consistently melodic.

These are also not strictly songs, per se. There isn't really any singing. For the most part, they are instrumentals. However, on track titled "Lingravet" features a spoken word part. This is a welcome touch because after so much clatter, it's good to hear the human voice even if it's only a speaking human voice.

Because these aren't proper songs, it's nearly impossible to figure out precisely what they're all about. However, there has to be a morbid sense of humor to title tracks with names like "Quietly Fishing in Styx." Something like "Abyss. Roots. Rot." can't be all that happy, though.

Circle Of Unexisted is certainly not for everybody. There won't likely be any dance remixes of these songs, nor will your typical cover band be covering these tunes. However, if you enjoy experimental sounds that don't conform to all the annoying EDM trends in popular music today, Crossroads just might give you a reason to keep believing in the future of pushing the artistic envelope. It will more than likely expand your expectations of Russian music because this could never have happened during the Cold War. Indeed, it would have unexisted then, for sure.
