(CMJ) New ambitions from Live Nation, the largest concert production company in America, may threaten Ticketmaster's concert ticket dominance. In a recent interview, Michael Rapino, Chief Executive of Live Nation, told the L.A. Times that he is actively working to lower ticket prices for the 29,000 concert events that his firm produces every year. "Seventy percent of people didn't go to a concert last year, and even the average concert fan only attends about two shows a year," Rapino noted. "We can grow this industry by lowering prices."

Ticketmaster currently serves as the exclusive ticket outlet for nearly all Live Nation events. Fees incurred by their services frequently raise ticket prices by 25-35 percent. Last year, average ticket prices rocketed to $57 for the most popular gigs. Meanwhile, Ticketmaster collected almost $1 billion off of the fees and surcharges.
