New Line has announced that they will be releasing the film on home video and DVD May 25th.
The previous two installments were release with a strategic plan to help lure fans into theatres for the next film by including teasers and promotional material on the DVDs. Since King is the final installment there is no need to wait for the theatric release to unleash the DVD to the public.
Now the juicy part for die hard fans the DVD details. King will be released as a 2-disc set in both full-screen and wide-screen formats. The bonus disc will be loaded with extras like behind the scenes footage, trailers and featurettes.
The even more diehard fans will be in luck around Christmas when the four-disc box set is released featuring tons of extras and a four hour directors cut version of King.
A boxset with all three films will have to wait a bit longer, most likely a couple of years, so that it doesnt conflict with the individual releases.
King may be the final film in the trilogy
but there is already a buzz that director Peter Jackson is planning to
a film version of the Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit.
