Singled Out: Damn Vandals's I Hate School
. Damn Vandals' hit single 'I Hate School' was co-written with our long-term collaborator Sam Francisco - he was six at the time said track was penned and has since acquired his new name in an attempt to hide his true identity from the educational institution he begrudgingly attends. The title of the song came to SF during a particularly violent early morning outburst which resulted in a Despicable Me metal lunch box being flung at full force towards a single pane glass window. The sound of the smashed glass was promptly followed by the primal scream of 'I Hate School' - each word lasting at least 3 seconds, spitting and tearing through the air at ear-melting volume. After that, the song kind of wrote itself around a riff Frank had been playing around with for some time. The rest of the lyrics are based on the testimony of another DV friend who hated his school so much he actually burnt it to the ground. All in all a bit of harmless fun really ….. In the studio, the only aim was that every guitar note, drum beat and syllable should reflect Sam Francisco's sheer animal rage - his total despair at the fact that an absurd amount of a human being's most joyful and innocent years should be spent indoors at a desk learning f-ing spellings. "I Hate School" along with the B-side, 'Whisky Going Free' are taken from their new album 'Rocket Out Of London'. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about the band right here!
