What separates one Doro release from another? The cover of course! I actually went back and did a bit o' homework and listened to "Calling The Wild," and "Love Me In Black" along with this CD before sitting down to piss off her fans with this review.

I give Doro the necessary props for her powerful voice and longevity but this album falls a little short when judged against "Calling the Wild," even the hype track "Descent" that features a duet with Type O Negative's Peter Steele seems to fail to hit the mark. Her two duets with Lemmy on "Calling the Wild" were far better executed.

The problem with this disc is one part production and one part songwriting. Doro has all of the elements in place to give us a kick you in the teeth metal album but the mix is far too watered down and it gives the songs a muddy and flat quality.  This is one of those cd's that you neither love to death or hate with a vengeance, it made me a bit ambivalent. Maybe my expectations were too high?

High points are the title song and the haunting ballad "Undying".  Doro fans are sure to at least like this album a lot but it's not her best work and it will have a hard time winning over new fans. But who cares, Doro is Doro is Doro and that's what you get here. If that's a good thing or a bad thing all depends on your taste. With better production this album would sit towards the top of Doro's large body of work but as it is, it's falls somewhere in the low middle of the pack.
