As a lead up to the release of the album, Locksley just released the digital single for "The Whip" yesterday, with the b-side "Oh, Wisconsin!" They were thrilled to be in same company of other great artists featured on the soundtrack including the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ida Maria, Say Hi, and The Sounds to name a few.
We chose the song "Grab On" as our first single because we wanted our fans to (literally) "Grab On" to the music. As musicians that want to make our music accessible, we always strive to create a song that forces the listener to press the play button over, and over... and over again! When we perform, we kill the club... literally. Girls are dripping wet and guys are wishing they were on stage with all of those girls. The energy is uncanny. So in the studio we always feel the need to make a few tracks here and there that we know will transcend well in the club. Since the necessity was there... "GRAB ON" was just a natural progression. The original beat came from the two main producers, DLake & Morsy; DJ'S who tear it up at some of the hottest NYC & Baltimore clubs. Electro-Dance-Pop music is super hot now and it's a genre that we love to spin anyways, so our goal was to take it and add our own "Claire Hux" vibe. The skeleton foundation was actually made in about 3-4 hours, and we fleshed it out the next day at another studio session. We passed it along to Symbol who originally started singing "Say Ahhh"- but sounded a little too much like Trey Songz hit single, which was blowing up the charts at the time. Dlake & Morsy told him to switch it up & he mumbled something about a breath and grabbing on- and it was like BOOM. Before we could even tell him that it was amazing he started screaming his trademark line: "l.s.h, man, l.s.h" which is short for "I Sh*t Hooks"- and he literally does deliver that on every track. Team LSH is now the official name our production/ writing team- and hey, we deliver. History was made that day in the studio and a hit was born. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
The Grand Ole Opry began as a radio show on Nashville's WSM-AM on November 28, 1925. At that point, radio was a relatively new phenomenon and stations were still trying to figure out just how to gain audiences. The station, owned by the National Life & Accident Insurance Company, hired big-time on-air personality and program director George D. "Judge" Hay from Chicago's WLS-AM. Hay had launched the successful National Barn Dance program on WLS and was looking to recapture that magic in Nashville. WSM had begun to find success in the genre a couple of weeks before Hay came onboard, featuring spots with "Dr. Humphrey Bate and his string quartet of old-time musicians" (whom Hay would later dub Bate's "Possum Hunters"). When Hay came to the station on November 2, it was just a matter of booking the right artists to create the ultimate showcase of "old-time music." He got his first bit of local talent at the suggestion of a station piano accompanist, who recommended her uncle, Jimmy Thompson, a local fiddler who learned to play songs as a boy from soldiers returning home from the Civil War. And so, with "Uncle Jimmy" Thompson booked, Hay launched the first WSM Barn Dance. more on this story
