Day in Pop Report for 10/10/2014
Perry will perform at the show for the first time. She had been speculated as a potential performer since August, along with Coldplay and Rihanna. Her appointment comes as interesting, since last week, as Billboard points out, she told ESPN's College GameDay that she's "not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl." And yet that's what the NFL was reportedly asking for in 2015 - a pay-to-perform format to go with one of the biggest and most coveted stages in all of entertainment. Read more here.
This year's festival, however, has yielded something truly unique - a rogue attendee found wandering naked and lost in the woods around the event, much to the surprise of local resident Casey Sanders, who stumbled across the man while doing a bit of bow-hunting on his own property (via Metro). "I showed up to my stand to bow hunt on Thursday October the 2nd and hear someone yell," Sanders wrote on the YouTube post recounting the incident. "I looked down to find a man standing in the creek holding a walking stick with not a stitch of clothing on him. Claimed he had been beaten up by some guys at Tommorwworld (sic) then dropped in the woods after they stripped him of everything. He spent days trying to find water and then he stuck to the creek once he found it. He recalled his number and I got in touch with somebody to come get him after I led him to the road. By far the craziest hunting story I will ever have!" The as-yet unidentified raver can be seen from a distance in the video as Sanders tries to communicate with him. Read more here.
But this does not appear to be the case, according to an XL Records financial earnings statement, which includes the note, "There will not be a further new release by Adele during 2014 and consequently there will be a fall in XL's turnover and profits. They continue, "Nevertheless, the directors are confident that by pursuing management policiesXL will continue to achieve success with other artists." Read more here.
"I'm just taking everything one day at a time and just being the best person that I can possibly be at the end of the day." Nick also said his twins, Monroe and Moroccan, are doing amazing and are currently on the road overseas with mom. As for the recent headlines that Mariah had vocal issues at her concert in Japan, Nick defended her, saying, "I just wish her nothing but the best, we're in contact constantly, you know you might have an off night here and there, but she's one of the greatest performers and entertainers of all time, she's not worried, we're not worried, just going to keep pushing." "Dance for Me" is an energetic track that has the duo's Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard asking a girl to dance for them out in the moonlight under the stars beside a dirt road. "It's not too late let me take you on a midnight drive / I might sound crazy, baby maybe somewhere under the stars," they sing. "Dance for Me," "Girl on the Radio" and "That's What's Up" are three extra tracks that will be on the Target deluxe edition of Anything Goes, available Oct. 14. Read more here.
The flick is directed by William H. Macy, who pops in the music video on keys to complete the unexpected scenario, which might be more jarring if the song wasn't quite so breezy and pleasant. Could Selena Gomez be making the full transition away from her bubble-gum pop days, straight past her sexy-gum pop days, and into her sugar free-gum pop days? You be the judge. Rudderless also stars Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup), and will see its theatrical release on October 17. For those in hope that the soundtrack features more Gomez, it doesn't, though Crudup sings a couple of tunes on the upcoming release. Watch it here.
The original's emotionally resonant, spacious beat allows Ludacris plenty of freedom to let his still-versatile flows fly. He takes the opportunity to correct false assumptions that he's bankrupt - "if you believe that you should kill yourself" - before taking the time to finally announce a release date for his long-awaited Ludaversal LP. He also announces a separate release: "EP comin' in December / Just talkin' bout how much it hurts," he explains. "And then finally that Ludaversal / Is dropping March 31st / And I'mma have the club goin' UP on a Tuesday." Listen to the freestyle here.
We see him laying in bed, shirtless, strumming on the guitar without a care in the world. "Pillow talk turns into sweet dreams," he croons, his voice as delectable as ever. "Sweet dreams turn into coffee in the morning." Always a gentleman, Miguel tagged his girlfriend, Nazanin Mandi, in the post. Who wouldn't want to wake up to this? Miguel has been teasing a follow-up to his successful 2012 album Kaleidoscope Dream. Although he didn't mention a specific date for the song's release on the post, he did caption the post "soon." Listen to the preview here.
"Burning candles inside of the studio, rappin n prayin" she tweeted yesterday with an accompanying picture of candles. Merely being in the studio is news enough, but it was a tweet later in the day that sent the rumor mill into overdrive. In a Twitter reply to a user noting how he couldn't sleep "with the thought of new music coming out soon," Rihanna added that that very feeling was "me errr night." See the photos and read more here.
It seems that the Mayor of Margaritaville is not to thrilled with the split on streaming music that he's getting from his label at the moment and would prefer to deal directly with Spotify. "Do you see anything in your future where we might get a raise directly from you, as opposed to going through the bulls**t you have to go through to deal with a label these days?" Buffett asked, point blank. In his answer Ek doesn't give a direct answer to Buffett's inquiry, although he does say he agrees and reveals that Spotify pays 70 percent of every dollar it makes to the music's rights holders. In an interview with Country Weekly, Evans said that she is still in shock of her whirlwind of a year. "None of that stuff ever seems real," she told Country Weekly. "It's only a year or two later where you're like, 'I really sang on a Doobie Brothers record. I really was on the TV show Nashville.' Because when you're in it, and you're doing it, you can't see it for what it is. You're just doing your job." Evans' episode on Nashville will air on Oct. 29 on ABC. While she said she has thought of branching into TV and film over the years, nothing has come to fruition yet. Read more here.
In the visual for the track, off her recently released album Point of No Return, the R&B singer lounges around Gianni Versace's famed palace of opulence in South Beach, packing her bags and questions whether or not her relationship is a doomed one. "I'm so over the s**t you put me through," he sings. "The stress I lay on you / Is this really us right now? / Can we love one another / And then treat one another like this?" At least she looks good while nursing her imminent breakup. Cole hangs by the pool in a strappy swimsuit and a pair of sparkly heels that do justice to the decadence of the mansion. If one of the "Super Rich Kids" in Frank Ocean's Channel Orange song gave his perspective, it would probably sound like "Melancholy." On the track, Smith tries to prove that he's not just the child of one of the more likable rapper/actor combos of all time and takes digs at his film career - "I bet you thought that you would body this / You're messing up a classic, how you did with The Karate Kid." Like on "Fast," he also rails against school. "I hide behind my hate because I wish I had your confidence," he raps. "But understand my only option is/ To go to school and try to be friends with all these obnoxious kids/ I don't hate you/ I'm jealous of how you got to live." Listen here.
Morrissey's war with Harvest started when he took to his blog to air his grievances with the way Harvest promoted - or failed to - his latest album World Peace Is None Of Your Business. He then claimed he was dropped by the label when he apparently wasn't, which acted as a self-fulfilling prophecy. After his label dropped him, he went on another tirade on his blog, lamenting that Harvest didn't let him make any videos for his recent album and becoming paranoid that the album would eventually be pulled from shelves, which it since has been, at least digitally. Now Harvest has fired back, in a winking sort of way, by selling knockoffs of the shirts on their website. Read more here.
The record marks P!nk's first foray into a more folk-based atmosphere, splitting from her usual pop rock fare to go a more Civil Wars-esque direction with fellow vocalist Green, who's also the former clean vocalist of Alexisonfire. The duo debuted their first single "You and Me" a month ago and have followed with the songs "Break the Cycle" and "Capsized" from the record. Read more here.
While Fences, in a hat that was not quite as big as Pharrell's, managed to stay calm, or at least hide his nerves, during his performance of his latest single "Arrows," Macklemore was all over the place. The Seattle rapper, in a hat comparable to Pharrell's, didn't come up stage until halfway through, but he made his presence be known. He spun around and kicked his feet, letting his fringe vest swing freely in the studio's air conditioning. Of course, it did seem like the crowd liked the performance, so perhaps Macklemore's theatrics were out of the goodness of his heart. Watch it here.
This joke on Lorde is a continuation from last week's episode, "Gluten Free Ebola" where Randy claims he works with Lorde's uncle, only to show up at a party Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny are throwing dressed as the pop star to sing her made-up song, "I Am Lorde." This episode also pokes a little fun at music journalism with a just-the-facts '40s-style reporter from Spin Magazine named Brandon Carlisle who just wants to know why the "humble" and "down to earth" Lorde is in South Park. Read more including Lorde's response here.
He was joined by a couple members of his crew for the song, who danced along as Smith, in an Instagram video, crooned that he "woke up like dis." But that wasn't all of the Queen Bey Smith took on in Nashville. He also performed, again along with his group, a version of Destiny's Child's "Say My Name." All in all, perhaps a daunting task for some karaoke singers. But Smith, at least in the clips provided, does it more than enough justice. Bring on the talks of a collaboration between the two one day. Watch it here.
