Dolls
Movie |
Hollywood Reporter reports: First-time filmmaker
Greg Whiteley came to the subject of his documentary feature "New York
Doll" not as a fan but as a friend of Arthur "Killer" Kane, bassist for
the short-lived but influential '70s rock band the New York Dolls.
Their unlikely collaboration began at the
Mormon temple in West Los Angeles, where the one-time hard-drinking musician
worked part time until his death last year. This loving portrait centers
on a June 2004 band reunion that quite startlingly turned out to be a valedictory
for Kane. Slated for October release via First Independent Pictures, "New
York Doll" is a tender take on life after stardom.[see full story for more]-

Live
8 Bounce |
NME reports: Obviously it was all to get the
message across, and it seems a bit churlish to mention but LIVE 8 has had
several inadvertent beneficiaries namely the artists who played it.
As with the 1985 Live Aid, those bands
that took part on July 2 have experienced a chart bounce that has seen
their album sales leap up in the immediate aftermath of the concert.
Keeping tabs on the artists who played
in Hyde Park, HMV has revealed that fans rushed to the shops yesterday
(July 3) to purchase albums of the likes of Pink Floyd, Robbie Williams
and Razorlight , all of whom have seen their sales leap up
[see full story for more including the

Decapitated
Vocalist |
siN's metal news reports: After nine years
in the band, DECAPITATED vocalist Sauron has announced he is leaving the
band. He has released this statement:
"After long consideration I have decided
to leave Decapitated. It was not an easy decision, however, I could reconcile
the welfare of the band with my personal plans, and hence quitting appeared
to be the best solution not hampering the evolution of Decapitated. In
the face of the wide-scaled plans of the band I had to decide between being
a member of Decapitated and my personal objectives. Moreover, another reason
that contributed to my decision have been some health complications.[see

Unsigned
MTV |
press release reports: Is it the beginning
of the end of the major label system when a band that doesn't even have
an 8x10 promo photo can get its video on MTV?
A number of folks have been predicting
for the past few years that recent advances in technology and the Internet
would inevitably change the landscape of the music business, maybe even
rendering the current major label system obsolete. Theoretically, an unsigned
band could write and record a catchy song, make a video with their friends,
and play ball on a national level without ever having to sign a major (or
even indie) label contract. Those theories are proving to be correct.
An unsigned band from Wilmington, NC called
The Majestic Twelve has cracked the proverbial nut. MuchMusic from Canada
is playing the video of their debut single "I Don't Have A Job," and last
week, MTV cleared it for upcoming airplay on MTV2 as well.[see full story

Zao
Drummer Switch |
punkbands reports: Zao has posted an update
on their plans for the year, as well as some information about a lineup
change. Drummer Stephen Peck, who performed on Funeral of God, the band's
recent Ferret debut has left the band.
According to the band, Peck has decided
that he is no longer financially able to be in a touring band like ZAO,
which does not make much money. He said that he would like the fans to
know that he "loved playing drums for ZAO" and "being in a band with my
friends," and that the decision was "very difficult." [see
