The spirits themselves were unreachable for comment, but members of the San Francisco-based Graves Brothers Deluxe cited the apparitions' motive to be the dark-but-auspicious energy which surrounds this date. An unnamed spokesman for the band stated via phone that this August 16 will be the 49th anniversary of the death of Bela Lugosi, the 36th anniversary of Woodstock, the 18th anniversary of the Harmonic Convergence, and will mark 28 years exactly since the death of Elvis Presley and the signing of the Buzzcocks to United Artists records.
When one reporter mentioned that August 16 is also Madonna's birthday, the band's spokesman abruptly hung up the phone. The Graves Brothers Deluxe will mark the release of "LIGHT" (on Good Forks Records) with a release party Thursday August 18 at San Francisco's Hemlock Tavern (www.hemlocktavern.com). Sharing the bill will be Ipecac recording artists SKELETON KEY and LA's STOLEN BABIES. Several West Coast dates will follow immediately.[see full story for more]
