Diddy Denies Tupac Conspiracy
AP reports: Sean "Diddy" Combs has denied a report by the Los Angeles Times that his associates were responsible for the 1994 robbery and shooting of Tupac Shakur at a New York recording studio, and that he knew about the attack in advance.

"The story is a lie," the hip-hop mogul said in a statement Monday. "It is beyond ridiculous and completely false. Neither (the late rapper Notorious B.I.G.) nor I had any knowledge of any attack before, during or after it happened.

"I am shocked that the Los Angeles Times would be so irresponsible as to publish such a baseless and completely untrue story." The Times said its story was based on FBI records, interviews with people at the scene of the 1994 shooting. - more on this story

The Wedding Present Return
PR reports: The Wedding Present will be releasing its first new full length in over three years on May 20. Titled El Rey, the album was recorded in early 2008 in Chicago by Steve Albini, marking the band's first record with the noted producer since 1991's renowned Seamonsters. Manifesto Records will be the U.S. record label.

Written while frontman David Gedge was living in Los Angeles, El Rey burns with West Coast sunlight; Hollywood seen through the eyes of a gritty British Northerner. Speaking about El Rey in MOJO Magazine recently, Gedge said: "I've been living in West Hollywood for the last year or so, and while I'm not going to claim that this is my 'L.A.' album, there are some references. I suppose the themes are lust, jealousy, betrayal, regret, obsession, super-heroes. the usual. We chose to record with Steve this time because the new songs were sounding very guitar-ry and quite dark. It's been good. As you'd imagine, really; Albini knows his stuff."

TWP returned from an eight-year hiatus in early 2005 with the release of Take Fountain. - more on this story

The Latest Stupid Idea: Web Tax To Save The Music Biz
idolator reports: South by Southwest--or any occasion when industry types and hanger-ons get together--can be the source of a number of bad ideas, but the most buzzed idea to circulate post-Austin this year seems to be the flat fee to download whatever music you please legally.

Like most completely implausible concepts, this one has its ups and downs, but no one actually believes this is ever going to happen, right? Well, Washington Post blogger Kim Hart actually sees some future in the idea.

The new idea on the table: Internet service providers would tack a small fee ($5 for example) onto monthly bills for broadband connections. The money would then go to the music industry to help compensate labels, performers, song-writers and other artists for music shared online. - more on this story

The Britney Attorney Retirement Plan
antiMusic reports: There seems to be a new retirement plan for attorneys in Los Angeles: the Britney/K-Fed plan. That's the only conclusion we can reach when you see how much the sharks are bilking the poptart for. TMZ has the story: So we just read the order forcing Britney to pay $375,000 for K-Daddy's legal bill. Here's what jumped out at us.

In the order issued by Commish Scott Gordon, he notes that disso queen Laura Wasser charged Brit $164,972 in legal fees. Remember, Wasser handled the case for 10 months. She's the one who handled the divorce and fought for joint custody and dealt with Brit during the meltdown.

Check this out. After Wasser quit, Brit Hired Trope and Trope to rep her. On Tropes watch, Brit lost custody and visitation. Their bill for five months -- $685,985.22 (the 22 cents is a killer). In fairness, Brit's craziness made it impossible for the Commish to do anything but strip her of custody. But seriously, $685,985.22???!!! - more on this story

The Loose Acoustic Trio Soph
PR reports: Back porch-modern jug band The Loose Acoustic Trio announced today that their sophomore CD, Sorrow Be Gone, will be released by Big Book Records, distributed via Burnside Distribution, on May 20, 2008.

The Loose Acoustic Trio proudly hail from Sacramento, CA., an island of Middle America in the far out west. Wielding accordion, upright bass, guit-jo, bedpandolin (you heard right), and tight three part harmonies, the Trio are as challenging as any upstart punk or new folk outfit. LAT have honed their defiantly all acoustic, truly unplugged sound outdoors under the hot San Joaquin Valley sun, serenading farmer's markets, festivals, and fairsand occasionally ducking indoors for college coffeehouses and their big concert appearances at The Palms Playhouse theater in rural Winters, CA. The Loose Acoustic Trio thrives on the margins, like the best of modern Americana.

Sorrow Be Gone, the band's second release, is spearheaded by a grin-inducing interpretation of The Who's classic rock cornerstone "Pinball Wizard," which will likely focus 15 minutes worth of attention on the band. Which is hopefully enough time for the band's thoughtful original songs to sink in. - more on this story
