Day in Rock Report for 09/11/2014

Foo Fighters Reveal Sonic Highways Guests

(Radio.com) In the initial announcement of the new Foo Fighters album, Sonic Highways, due on November 10 via Rockwell Recordings, word was that the record would be guest-heavy, as the collection was recorded in cities across America utilizing different studios and musicians local to that city.

Consequence of Sound has now confirmed some of the artists that will be appearing on the LP, and they are indeed heavy-hitters of rock and roll: Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, The Eagles' Joe Walsh, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Nate Mendel, bassist for the band, recently spoke with NME about the experience and reasoning behind working with who they did. "We wrote the bulk of the songs back in Los Angeles," Mendel explains, "so it was more of a matter of experiencing each place learning about the studio and then bringing in guest musicians.

"In Seattle we had Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie; in the desert outside Los Angeles it was Joe Walsh from The Eagles for a classic southern California feel - and, sure enough, suddenly our song has layers of 'Hotel California' in it."

Slipknot Frontman Makes Surprising Announcement

(TeamRock Radio) Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor says the band's bassist and drummer will share the same mask design on stage. And he reveals they decided to make the move as they didn't want to be disrespectful to late bassist Paul Gray and former drummer Joey Jordison.

Taylor tells Loudwire: "We wanted to make something that looked unified but stayed with the spirit of what the band is all about. Instead of trying to find something that was individualistic, Clown designed a mask that the drummer and bass player will both wear.

"On one hand they get a mask but at the same time, it's not an individual mask that we in the band use. We knew any attempt to do anything like that might be taken as disrespectful, but at the same time, it's part of the way of moving, getting past the hardest steps.

"We decided we would come up with a mask that works for both the bassist and the drummer, and that's what they wear on stage." here.

Megadeth Pull Out Of Motorhead Cruise Due To Mustaine Medical Issues

Megadeth have been forced to cancel their involvement in Motorhead's upcoming Motorboat cruise after frontman Dave Mustaine was told by his doctor to cancel all performances for the next two months.

The band had the following to say about pulling out of the cruise, "Due to complications arising from a previous cervical spine surgery, and upon his doctor's strict recommendations, Dave Mustaine has cancelled all performances for the next 8 weeks. With rest and treatment, he is expected to recover and resume performing soon.

"The band was looking forward to the concerts and cruise, and is disappointed that they will not be able to see their fans. Megadeth expects to return to the road and will see their fans soon!"

Organizers have also announced that with Megadeth's departure, the super group Metal Allegiance (including Megadeth's David Ellefson and Chris Broderick) will be joining the festivities when it launches on September 22nd-26th.

The all-star group will features singers Philip Anselmo (Down, ex-Pantera), Joey Belladonna (Anthrax), and Chuck Billy (Testament), guitarists Chris Broderick (Megadeth), Jon Donais (Anthrax, Shadows Fall), Scott Ian (Anthrax), Mark Zavon (Kill Devil Hill), bassists Frank Bello (Anthrax), Rex Brown (Kill Devil Hill, ex-Pantera) and David Ellefson (Megadeth), and drummers Charlie Benante (Anthrax) and Mike Portnoy (The Winery Dogs, ex-Dream Theater).

Event producer Alan Koenig of ASK4 Entertainment had this to say about the change in plans, "You can't replace a band like Megadeth, who have done so much to change the landscape of heavy music over the past 30 years. We wish Dave Mustaine all the best in his recovery.

"But we're excited that Megadeth's David Ellefson and Chris Broderick will still be joining us. The whole reason to do these music cruises is to give fans an experience that they can't get anywhere else - and bringing Metal Allegiance onboard with metal's most loyal fans fits that bill."

Megadeth's David Ellefson had this to say, "I'm really looking forward to being together with our friends and fans on Motrboat. Metal Allegiance is a great way to continue our brotherhood of all things metal."

Philip Anselmo says, "I always love getting together with my brothers and throwing down. The Allegiance jam is sure to be the best jam I've been involved with yet".

Kill Devil Hill Rex Brown says, "We have jammed at some big metal events in the past, but Metal Allegiance is gonna blow EVERYONE on the Motrboat cruise right out of the water!!! Let her rip!"

Mike Portnoy adds: "I've been honored to have been part of some previous metal jams over the years and there's something very special and (Goddamn) electric that happens when you put this group of guys together in a room or on a stage. Myself and my brothers in metal on the Motrboat are metal lovers through and through and we love to get together to jam, have fun and pay tribute to the music that we all love so much."

The cruise will sail from Miami and will also feature Motrhead, Anthrax, Testament, Down, High On Fire, Kill Devil Hill, Zakk Wylde, Jim Breuer Band, Danko Jones, Fireball Ministry, Wilson and Cilver, as well as a spoken word performance from Anthrax's Scott Ian.

U2's New Album Won't Make The Grammys or Billboard Chart

(Radio.com) U2 are experiencing the pains of being ahead of the curve. After the release Tuesday (Sept. 9) of a new album, Songs of Innocence, for free via iTunes and during the worldwide event at when the iPhone 6, iWatch and a new Apple Pay system were revealed, they are now facing some consequences from the business side of the music industry.

Billboard reports that their new album will not be eligible for consideration for the 57th GRAMMY Awards. The Recording Academy only considers albums released before Sept. 30, 2014, for that particular year, and due to the freely available nature of this album ahead of its commercial release date of Oct. 14 will not be considering it. The Academy feels it does meet the qualifications for consideration in the 58th ceremony, however.

"All entries - singles, tracks, albums - must be commercially released, nationally distributed and available from any date within the eligibility period," a representative for the GRAMMYs told Billboard. The trick there is the phrase "commercially released" - giving it away for free with a future commercial release date apparently doesn't count for the GRAMMYs.

Additionally Billboard revealed that, much like Jay Z's Magna Carta giveaway with Samsung, U2's free album will not count toward the Billboard 200 albums chart until October. More details here.

The Kinks Launching Massive Reissue Campaign

(Radio.com) Like Led Zeppelin and Smashing Pumpkins, the Kinks are about to undergo a massive archival campaign. A whopping 16 of their albums have been remastered for digital release and are available now after Legacy Recordings gained the North American rights to the catalog of RCA and Arista albums between 1971 and 1985 - and they have two extensive physical reissues on the way.

The Essential Kinks, out Oct. 14, marks the first time the English rock band have released career-spanning album. Fittingly, they went all out for it, even tapping David Bowie for the liner notes.

"I've never heard a Kinks song that I didn't like," Bowie writes in the notes. "Of course, from their noisy and brash beginnings, the Kinks have come to stand for some of the most enduring and heart-clutching pop of all time. They are in the gut of every British song-writer who followed them and are indisputably a cornerstone of everything pop and rock. I love 'em. The world loves 'em."

The Kinks are also releasing an expanded CD/DVD deluxe edition of Muswell Hillbillies, Legacy Edition, which includes the 1971 album remastered from original analog tapes in full plus nine bonus tracks. more details here.

"There's even stuff that's been in our brains for as long as we've been musicians." He hasn't put a timeframe on the project but adds: "It will be some time in the next few months. We'll have a record out some time in early 2015." Read more here.

Clutch Planning Next Album

(Classic Rock) Clutch will start recording their 11th album in January - but frontman Neil Fallon says they're not aiming to follow the format of 2013's Earth Rocker. The band will spend the next three months in pre-production before aiming to complete studio work by March 2015.

Fallon tells Lithium Magazine: "We'll take October, November and December to finish up writing. We'll do a run from Christmas to mid-January out to Texas, where we plan to record. Then we'll record in January, February and probably the beginning of March, take a little bit of time off and go back out on the road."

The vocalist says of their writing: "I think the best thing is just following your gut. I think if we tried to make Earth Rocker 2 it would be DOA." But he adds: "Then again, you don't want to completely abandon it." More with Fallon here.

Bruce Springsteen Looks Back At 57 Channels As Playful Misfire

(Radio.com) In 2001, Bruce Springsteen published Songs, a book including most of the lyrics that he'd written up to that point, which also included commentary by the Boss at the beginning of each chapter.

It perhaps wasn't the song-by-song rundown that fans had hoped for, but it did provide a bit of insight to where Bruce's head was at different points in his career as a writer.

Now it looks like he's ready to examine his music videos in a more granular way. He recently posted an item to his official website, "Video of the Week: 57 Channels (and Nothin' On)," presumably the first of a series of Springsteen dissecting his videos.

He writes, "Shot back in the quaint days of only 57 channels and no flat screen TVs, I have no idea what we were aiming for in this one outside of some vague sense of 'hipness' and an attempt at irony. Never my strong suit, it reads now to me as a break from our usual approach and kind of a playful misfire."

Aerosmith In The Studio For Pump's 30th Anniversary

The latest episode of the syndicated radio show In The Studio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 25th anniversary of Aerosmith's 1989 hit album Pump. The show sent over these details:

A three dimensional hard rock masterpiece, Pump delivered Aerosmith's deepest well of songwriting, blistering performance chops, and the most innovative production of any hard rock album to date, courtesy of the late Bruce Fairbairn.

It's blazing energy and cinematic presentation combined with unforgettable songs make Pump one of Aerosmith's biggest sellers (over 7+ million), producing three Top 10 hits "Janie's Got A Gun", "Love In An Elevator", "What It Takes" and delivering the band its first Grammy Award.

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler shares with InTheStudio host Redbeard how protective the band is with the creative process in the studio. "A guy came in while we were recording, rehearsing this album, doing pre-production and he mentions, "Well you gotta have an "Angel", you gotta have a "Dude", and we threw him out... When you look at it like that it becomes a business thing, plus it can tend to scare you half to death."

Mike Zito Explains Exit From Royal Southern Brotherhood

(The Blues Mike Zito has discussed the difficulty he faced in deciding to leave Royal Southern Brotherhood - as he tried to balance his love of taking part with his desire to remain focused on his solo career.

Last month he confirmed he'd be moving on after their European tour, and that his final appearance would be on the US Blues Cruise next month. He'll be replaced by Bart Walker.

Zito tells American Blues Scene: "In 2011 I was just developing this sound I had in my head, blues but kind of country. I was really getting in there - then here comes the Royal Southern Brotherhood, out of the blue.

"I'd been writing with Cyril Neville and I've known Devon Allman for years. We got into the Brotherhood - and part of me, right away, was like, 'I don't know that I want to do something.' I'm in the middle of this career, and I was starting to get somewhere."

He admits the chance to raise his profile was part of the motivation for taking part. But he'd also tried to secure his solo opportunities. Read about that here.

Monster Magnet Preview Upcoming Release

(hennemusic) Monster Magnet have issued "No Paradise For Me" as a preview to "Milking The Stars: A Reimagining Of Last Patrol", due for release on November 18. The project sees new interpretations of some of the material featured on 2013's "Last Patrol" album, rounded out with four new songs and two live tracks.

"This was a happy experiment for me," says leader Dave Wyndorf. "It's not a re-mix record by the current definition. It's more like Last Patrol in a "what if?" style alternate reality. What if these songs were recorded in 1968? What would happen if I turned a pretty song into an angry one? How would adding creepy organs and Mellotrons affect the emotional vibe of a song? These are just a few of the questions that roll around in my head when I write and record any album but this time I decided to actually answer them with fully fleshed out, recorded and mixed examples".

"The process actually created new songs," he added. "That's the icing on the cake for me. New sounds, new vocals, different instruments and arrangements make for a weird 1960's vibe totally apart from Last Patrol which was fun for Phil, Bob, Garrett, mixer Joe Barresi and myself to explore." Singled Out: The Pineapple Thief's Simple As That

Today Bruce Soord, vocalist and guitarist of The Pineapple Thief tells us about "Simple As That" from their brand new album "Magnolia" (The album comes out September 16th in the U.S.). Here is the story:

'Simple as That' is a result of me picking up my guitar and going 'grrr'. I was angry at the time, but to be honest, I had been dispirited and angry for so long that I had journeyed far beyond angry, emerging into a world of eerie, lonely stoicism. No sympathy sought. The chorus is undeniably angry, but the rest of song reflects the stoicism.

The 'woo hoo' lines aren't there because I couldn't be arsed to write a lyric, or because I wanted a crowd sing along. They are there because there is nothing left to say that will make any difference. Let's just waste no more time, eh?

This is also, in my opinion, one of the finest sounding The Pineapple Thief tracks to date. This is down to the engineering and mixing of Adam Noble. Witnessing him working on these mixes was a humbling experience. This allowed me to focus on song writing, my vocal and the guitar. How many of the great (and great sounding) albums were written, mixed and produced by the same guy? Not very many. And there's a good reason for that.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself as you grab a free download here and learn more about the album right here!
