The Radiohead Backlash

Posted by dr venkman:
kid rock? didnt he buy an entire trailer park with all the money he made? Someone should get him radiohead tickets and I guarentee he'll have a better orgasm than with pam anderson.

Posted by Edric:
what kind of compleate idiot uses's quotes from Kid Rock to bash Radiohead? He would have been better off quoting sombody on the same level artisticly as Radiohead. However, I can't think of any that exist.

Posted by shiffty1032231:
People always hate bands that try things differently or arn't the standards they were (aka pablo honey and the bends). I think, and im a product of this, that everytime I listen to that band I love them even more. More than Nirvana who were my all time favorite band until I found OK Computer and Kid A. The music speaks for itself and they are ****ing great!

Posted by coldradio:
It is sad u waste your time bashing a band's own musical expression and let your own ignorance ruin good music. U deserve never to listen to music again.

Posted by glaurongg:
radiohead it the most passionate band ever. they are like beethoven in a five pieces, that is why they can have two piano albums dedicated to them.

Posted by wow.:
the first four paragraphs are about the band, and are basically things anybody already knows. yes, they're critical darlings, yes, they are hyped, yes, we know their biography and discography. the second paragraph is blatantly contradictory and also false; later on, it is said that radiohead have many peers, or at least artists trying to sound like them, so they aren't the lone gunmen of pop music, and radiohead are clearly very high-profile, they have had more mtv/mtv2/etc specials about them than any other currently recording band i can think of. they're topped only by nirvana when it comes to retrospectives, it seems, and of course they've got more televised concerts than nirvana. if mtv isn't playing radiohead, it's because they aren't playing anything, they're just showing a bunch of reality tv. radiohead aren't any more slighted than the entire remainder of the music world.

the fith paragraph is the only only one so far that even MENTIONS the point of the article, and it proves nothing. it says that there is an "ever-growing legion of Radiohead detractors that are voicing their opinion in the media", yet the article only goes to quote one source, an article 2 years old from the new york times. and the quote that they took doesn't prove anything about a legion of detractors. all it mentions is that funny article where 10-year-olds drew pictures based on the music. if the legion of detractors are all in 5th grade, radiohead haven't got anything to worry about.

paragraph seven is about how one person's reason for getting tired of radiohead was because of overexposure of the sound radiohead invented, due to a bunch of copycat bands. first, i've never heard anybody else cite their reason for disliking a band was because that band had too many imitators. second, how is that radiohead's fault? that's not even backlash against radiohead, it's backlash against bands that imitate radiohead and the record labels that fund it!

paragraph 8 is about how kid rock doesn't like radiohead. 'nuff said. paragraphs 9 and 10 are about people that support radiohead, and are the only paragraphs that hold any weight.

paragraph 11 has a topic statement that says "As time passes and Radiohead sinks evermore into their own musical cocoon, the divisiveness grows." the remainder of the paragraph has nothing to do with either radiohead sinking into a musical coccoon or about growing divisiveness regarding the band. all it talks about is that radiohead are making a new album. wow, really!? i had NO IDEA since nobody has reported about that!

the last two paragraphs are about how some idiots wish radiohead would make more guitar music. now, this is the age old debate, and my personal (and correct) opinion is that radiohead are so much better making what they make now, and that much of their guitar stuff is crap. but i have to say, quoting someone who believes otherwise means nothing. for every bends fan there's a kid a fan, so how does the opinion hold any weight? it's always been this way, the fanbase has always been split, and it's not like there are NEW detractors, just the same people who stopped liking them sometime around 1999. it doesn't help prove the point of this attention-defecit article whatsoever.

Posted by kylie:
this the most terrible pieces of journalism written about radiohead that i've read since their blender cover in 2003.

Posted by radiocuckoo:
All I know is that I only got into Radiohead when Kid A came out, i was in PDX airport at 6am, sat alone, and listened to Everything in Its Right Place for the first time, and it was like i was saying to myself "this is mine, no one can take this away from me." Obviously a lot of other Radiohead fans feel that way, that this is their band, free of media-cursing and smearing, so it's better if not ALL of the critics are upbeat about them...especially Kid Rock, what a joke.

Posted by fidelissimo:
Thats the whole idea behind radiohead, they didnt get stale like coldplay. coldplay found asound that was popular and stuck with it until it died (third album). radiohead could make a lot of "bend"ish albums, but that would get boring. their greatness comes from their ability to produce a new sound every album. if kid rock is your musical guide, then your musical taste is obviously low brow at best. and as for bands that reproduce their sound, i havent heard one, because radiohead is a unique band with a unique sound. the closest i can think of a copy is when jet (a terrible band) tried to copy blackstar with that oh look what youve done song

Posted by fatter, depressed:
kid rock quoted as a musician is hilarious...

Posted by Alas klass:
You guess the origin of my name you win the truth. Talk talk talk, a lot of talk about a lot of things. People who love Radiohead and I mean truely love Radiohead understand how frustrating life is. Radiohead are the most amazing band in the world, you want everyone to know this and understand this - they don't which leads to frustration!!!! with many exclamatione marks But if everyone loved Radiohead and there weren't those people who took the piss would it be as fun to love them as much? I rabbit on but an answer would be good

Posted by Chantal:
The music is all that matters to them and it shows, beautifully.

Posted by carl:
dont need to say anything cos everyone else has pretty much said it all for me - trent please shut up

Posted by CC:
Just an observation: all the people I've encountered who have formal music training have a Radiohead CD collection. hmmm...

Posted by Jarad:
behind pink floyd. radiohead are the greatest band to touch the earth... and if i didnt hate kid rock enough before, you can only imagine how i feel about him now.

Posted by JZ Truth:
Radiohead is the only band that I never tire of listening to. Their catalog is diverse enough to satisfy any mood or urge. Seeing them live was the closest thing to a religious experience that I have encountered. They do what they want, and it always comes out gold. They make other rock bands seem childish. Folks, it's not even close. They are the rock band of our generation, and the mark they leave will never fade or be diminished.

Posted by brendon:
i agree with neil and jesus. this article is bogus.

Posted by Neil:
I swear I typed 'illiterate' ;)

Posted by Neil:
This nearly illiterature and mostly illogical argument's rather embarassing.

The author repeatedly contradicts himself (for instance, saying that Radiohead refuses to fit into the mainstream - and then, paragraphs later, describing how overexposed they are and listing some of their numerous accolades) and makes huge factual inaccuracies (it's ludicrous, for instance, to claim that radio and television are unwililng to play Radiohead's music: MTV played numerous videos for The Bends, OKC, Kid A and Amnesiac - and I would guess HTTT also, although I stopped watching MTV by then. I remember Radiohead video marathons on MTV. I remember DC101 - the biggest rock station in Washington, DC playing the entirety of Kid A. I remember the huge amount of media hype that surrounds every Radiohead release. I remember the blanket coverage they get from every major newspaper. The guys are popular, and it's kind of ridiculous to assert that they aren't.)

Posted by fitterhappier:
Radiohead minds their own business, doesn't copy anyone and writes masterpieces. OK Computer was voted the #1 most influential album of the past 20 years by Spin for good reason. Talented musicians deserve to be uplifted and untalented musicians deserve STDs.

Posted by vn:
would you put fifth graders in a native american sweat tent?
generally kids don't have to dive that deep...cotton candy or easy reach reccomended...
as for 'grown-ups'
what about art is there to argue about?
you get something from it, or ya don't...or at first you do, then later don't...or the opposite...for me, radiohead make beatific music...what's your cup of tea. poison. in small dosages...antivenin. or something like that.

Posted by Yorklover:
I'm so angry, why does 'good' music all of the sudden come from only guitars...and they get an opinion from kid rock...a total talentless redneck...what does this say, if anything it's a compliment to radiohead. They don't try to be party music! what idiots...i can't take this!

Posted by The Eye of Ra:
Great article. Music is all about expression. Radiohead and Tool are the best in the world at this.

Posted by RadioheadFan:
Ok, so Dave Matthews and Chris Martin both like Radiohead. Why do they need to be criticized? Why would they need to be avoided?

Posted by Klicia:
No commentaries. All has already been said... (What an article!)

Posted by K.H:
There's the kind of people who like to think they know music and try and listen to as much music as possible, buying all the new cds and magazines to get the lowdown on the latest new bands etc; and then their are the kind of people who know inside that they have a passion for music, something that can't be forced, and these people listen to Radiohead.

Anarchy Rules, Ok. Radiohead Rule, OK Computer.

Posted by Dave:
People dont get radiohead at all, to criticise radiohead is like critisising the way the universe works, the universe cant cant control itself, its just the way it is, you cant go saying "its crap the way the universe put jupiter in our solar system" or " i dont like the colour of space, what was the universe thinking there"

Radiohead dont sit and make up music from nowhere, it was always going to be this way, its different with other bands like oasis who just think lets make an album and they make some crap but if you stopped them at that point and leaded there thoughts elsewhere they would think up a different album, and the album they were going to make in the first place would have faded away into nothing never to be thought of.

I didnt want to make this so complicated (even though it is quite straight forward) but its hard to explain, and dont go looking to radiohead to confirm any of this unless you know them personally because they talk crap in interviews, which i understand but i think theyve took it far too far.

Posted by Melanie:
EVeryone i know bitches about how depressing Thom Yorke is... The vochals, they whine... I don't understand why everyone is complaining. If you don't want to hear the music, turn the damn cd player off and listen to some ****ing Green DAy. Music is an expression. If Thom Yorke is feeling whiney, i say he should wine all he wants cause he's fantastic at it. Why too people over examine this music so much, it's ripped to peaces by 10 year olds, and corporate rock stars...they think it is sad. It is sad, let's move on to something new. Why don't people respect that he's a raw emotional left brain and actually look at the music beyond how "saddddd" it is.

Posted by Mike:
They're the greatest ever.

Posted by James:
Well nowadays bands are scared to experiment. Radiohead arn't scared at all every album is different, true alot people don't get them. I think getting 10yr olds to listin to Radiohead is sad and pathetic, they just listin on whats on the radio or whats on MTV. Don't they Trent? Try a 13yr old they might understand music a little better.

Posted by Michael:
Good article... a lot of people dont "get" them, that's true,.. but i think kid rock stands even less of a chance of "getting it" than those 10 year olds.

Posted by Growave:
The fact that Kid Rock doesn't like them makes me glad that I listen to them even more now.

Posted by steve k:
Hey, where'd you get that quote from that radio station? Sonic is a good station, but they're kind of small and in a city pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I'm surprised to see that.

Posted by GTD:
Oh Christ jumped up and smoked the crack pipe - there is no band more overrated than Nirvana!

Posted by Black Mountain:
Radiohead. Great band. Third greatest band in the past 20 years. 1. U2 2. Nirvana 3. RADIOHEAD!!!!

Posted by GREENMUSE:
actually he is.he tears it up on bass.

Posted by eric:
GTD must not be a musician

Posted by eric:
GTD must not be a muscian

Posted by GTD:
Radiohead are the new most overrated band. Every decade needs its band like that.

Posted by joe show:
If you have never seen Radiohead live I'm very sorry

Posted by RyRy:
I'm sorry, but every real musician knows, if you're not down with the head, your not down with art. GET DOWN WITH THE SOUND OR GET THE F*CK OUTTA TOWN!

Posted by Monster Magnet:
Radiohead's Kid A is the best album of the past 5 years.

Posted by GREENMUSE:
i doubt it.if miss hancock,my 8th grade english teacher couldnt help me,thom yorke has little hope either.

Posted by Anuj:
Ignore the punctuation remark, just check them out. From their debut album Pablo Honey, 'Creep' and 'Anyone Can Play Guitar' are worth checking out. The Bends is a great album from start to finish. OK Computer was the start of their experimentation. Kid A was very polarizing with regard to fan response. Personally I would buy the album just for the title track. But definitely worth checking out. Radiohead are to Dave Matthews what The Clash are to folks like the Madden brothers from Good Charlotte.

Posted by 3.14:
Greenmuse, you should definitely listen to Radiohead. It will improve your punctuation.

Posted by GREENMUSE:
i dont get the big to do over them.if chris martin and dave matthews like them,im glad ive kept my distance.

Posted by Zane:
I don't think the point of using the five-year-olds was for musical criticism. It was just the base feelings they felt. Radiohead's music has always been great, but Thom Yorke's vocals can get way to whiny at times.

Posted by fifthgradersarestupid:
when i was in fifth grade, i listened to rap and pop...ten year olds have no credibility in the realm of musical criticism

Posted by Jesus:
Often imitated but never duplicated. Radiohead is one of the few bands out right now that people will be talking about 20 years from now.
