Warped Band Joust

(Earshot) The 3rd Annual "Volcom Entertainment Band Joust," presented by music and clothing company Volcom, is underway as of April 11. In a sold-out Round One at San Diego's Soma, Autobomb defeated six other bands for the right to face the winner of Round Two in a final round in late May.

The popularity of the Jousts has mushroomed in recent years-mainly because the fans choose the winner. After each band's performance, organizers haul out a decibel meter and let the fans' voices be heard. Consequently, music industry insiders have paid attention, realizing it's a reliable gauge for up-and-coming talent (Volcom among them; they plucked punk-metal trio ASG from an East Coast joust in 2002/2003).

"Lately management and agents have been scoping out the jousts," says Volcom Entertainment's Mark Gardner, adding that bands clamor for the opportunity to win "equipment, clothing, Warped performances, cash, even tour trailers. But the bands are more stoked on just playing the big room at Soma, which is reserved for big touring acts, than winning stuff. To them, its all about the big stage, and playing with some big bands at the finals show."

The prize package this year includes a performance on the Volcom Stage at the Warped Tour in San Diego, a $2500 prize package from Monster Cable, studio time and a gift box from Volcom Clothing, Electric Sunglasses, and Vestal Watches. As an added bonus, the finals show will feature surprise Special Guest headliners (past bills have included Rise Against, Strung Out, Guttermouth and Death by Stereo).

Says Somas Len Paul: "The Volcom Band Joust is the single greatest opportunity for local bands in the San Diego market, and to have it backed and supported by a great independent label that all the kids identify with and stand behind has made these events very successful."

In the next year, Volcom plans to build on the Jousts momentum. The company will revive its LA, Sacramento, Orange County and East Coast/Florida Jousts (which were last staged in 2002 and 2003) and venture into Canada, thus expanding opportunities for unsigned bands around North America.
