The story behind "For Every Drop" is that it is a song that came from multiple collaborations. My friend Erin Mckewin, a great singer songwriter, came over one day to hang out and play music. We played each other bits of songs, and when I played her a bit of what is now "For Every Drop" she liked it and suggested we finish it. The song at that point wasn't about anything in particular and we decided it'd be fun to write a song about your quintessential self-involved person who believes "for every drop that falls from above you say this is a sign of what I'm thinking of."
So, the song evolved and was thought to be finished, when I got together with my friend Mike Daly, another great writer and played the song for him. He told me the song needed a chorus I thought we already had a pretty good one, but off we went and wrote ourselves a chorus. I was able to collaborate so openly on this song, which is unusual for me, since I wrote everything else on the album on my own, because I was un-attached to the song itself, and it was just a passing idea I had not a message I had to get across or an inner emotion I had to work through.
I got to the studio and when I was sorting through the songs with producer Malcolm Burn, he picked that one out as one he thought we should record, and we further mixed and mashed up the form of the song. And so, the final result is a product of many people, their ideas, and an awful lot of cooks in the kitchen. And honestly, it's one of my favorite songs on the record. So, I guess it just goes to show, it doesn't hurt to play with the other kids in the sandbox.
