Johnny Depp Thinks Actors Playing Their Own Music Is 'Sickening' (Recap)
. "The kind of luxury now is, anybody with a certain amount of success, if you have a kind of musical being, you can go out and start a band and capitalize on your work in other areas," said Depp, who was in Australia promoting his new film Mortdecai. "But I hate the idea, 'Come see me play the guitar because you've seen me in 12 movies.' It shouldn't be [that way]. You want the people who are listening to the music to only be interested in the music." So far, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts frontman Russell Crowe, 30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto, She and Him frontwoman Zooey Deschanel, ex- Dogstar bassist Keanu Reeves, GRAMMY-nominated banjo player Steve Martin, solo artist/Pete Yorn duet partner Scarlett Johansson, half of the Bacon Brothers duo Kevin Bacon and two-time Oscar winner/eight-time GRAMMY winner Barbra Streisand have yet to comment. Depp's comments would certainly include a band called P. Funny about that, because it's the '90s band for which Depp himself played guitar alongside Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes. They even released a self-titled album in 1995 on Capitol Records, and while the Buttholes were signed to that label at the time, it's unlikely that a major label would have been interested in a side project from the band's singer if not for Depp's involvement. At the time, the actor was riding high on critically hailed films including Edward Scissorhands, What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Ed Wood. Of course, Depp doesn't have a problem with sharing his six-string skills with his friends in bands who need the help. In recent years, for instance, he's made musical contributions to records by the New Basement Tapes (watch "Kansas City" above), Aerosmith and Oasis, among others. And he's been known to jump on stage with Willie Nelson, too. Read more - here. Radio.com is an official news provider for antiMusic.com.
