Singled Out: Imani Coppola
.
American singer/songwriter Imani Coppola, (co-writer for Meghan Trainor), just released her new album "Hypocrites" and to celebrate we asked her to tell us about the songs "Just Feels Good" and "Swipe". Here are the stories: "Just Feels Good" happened when I had an idea to write a song using emojis as lyrics. When producer, and "it's complicated" soon to be ex, Richard Maheux sent me his track I knew it would be a perfect fit for the experiment. The track had a bright rainbow after a thunderstorm vibe with it's minor to major chord resolutions. There was something sad but warm about it. I wanted to juxtapose the feeling of the track with some very basic lyric about feeling good. I certainly wasn't in a good place when I wrote the song. But somehow I knew I could write my way out of it and I could always return to the song and feel good when I listened in the future. So Richard and I, whilst breaking up, managed to keep our sh*t together enough to get the song finished. Him and I recorded most of the background vocals in the living room of his apartment. It was mid summer and very hot. I remember both of us being shirtless when we multi tracked the "Ahhhs". Because of the noise we had to keep the AC off. I recorded the verses in my home studio, also shirtless. I think we can all relate to this song. Every so often you feel that light. You feel it from within. It emanates and people respond to it. And when they do their own light shines from within. It's contagious. It just feels good. "Swipe": The track for "Swipe" was created by Joshua Valleau, a long time collaborator and co producer of most of my new album. I was using the Tinder app at the time and feeling the Tinder burn. Robotically I'd go through countless faces by the minute as my thumb worked overtime to discard undesirables to the left. Becoming more and more resentful of the patterns I was seeing in their profile pictures, I decided to make a satire song on the subject. The tiger, the fish, the drink in hand, the mountain climbing, the surfing, the dog, the boat, the best man at wedding, the ball game, the drivers seat in parked car, are people really just sitting in their cars taking selfies all day? I think people are really just sitting ANYWHERE taking selfies all day. Anyway, all of these men just became the same dumb dude to me. This song is dedicated to the same dumb dude that is EVERY dude on Tinder. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
