5 Things That Didn't Escape From The 80's.
Ah, the 80s! The decade where punk morphed
into the more commercial friendly new wave, Mr. T got a paycheck, Tom Hanks
was a cross-dressing sitcom star not the egotistical star of the silver
screen he is today, Madonna was like a virgin and critics called Duran
Duran the biggest band since The Beatles. Michael Jackson had
most of his original face; the 49ers dominated football. Hippies became
Yuppies by trading in their love beads for BMWs, white picket fences and
2.3 children. Apple gave the world the first home computer anyone could
use and Pac Man was the penicle of high-tech video games. Steven Spielberg
just wanted to entertain, not indoctrinate moviegoers with his political
views. Ed Murphy was nasty and Blondie went disco and then brought rap
to the mainstream. KISS unmasked and glam metal dudes wore more makeup
than their groupies. Bon Jovi gave music a bad name and The New Kids on
the Block gave birth to the dreaded boyband craze. Political correctness
was only something you would hear in the more radical corners of University
campuses and George Bush told us to read his lips. A CD was something that
only Wall Street guys knew about and you could get rich quick with junk
bonds.
What a decade. We may never see another
one like it in our lifetime. Somethings havent really changed. Sitcoms
are still lame, cheesy pop still sells, the decade of greed gave way to
the decade of greed and corruption. But what about the things that never
escaped from the 80s, that will remain forever in our mind as a reminder
of the decade? Thats what we will be looking at with this Top5.
Top 5 Things That
Didn't Escape From The 80's.
5) Yo Malery!", Alf, Leg Warmers,
The Rubiks Cube, Atari and Wheres The Beef?
4) Everyone ownedVinyl Records
remember those?
3) "Just Say No" (ok
we have "Just say yes!" antiMUSIC T-shirts, so maybe this one doesnt really
apply)!
2) I Want My MTV! Music Videos
on Music Television, an amazing concept that didnt last long after the
80s gave way to the 90s and Real World and Road Rules marathons.
Remember when they showed videos 24 hours a day?
And
the Number One Thing That Didn't Escape From The 80's.
Looking at that hot chic on an album cover
only to discover it's a dude!
Your
turn, what do you think? What will forever stick in your mind as a definite
mark of the 80's?

I rememeber in the early 80's that music styles was like a form of racism. I remember black kids hated rock and white kids declared any black music outside of "white rock" disco. That was incorrect. MTV woudn't play black musi videos unless it was pop or rock-metal. I remember white friends who got in fights for listening to a Prince or Rick James music by other white kids. I am black. In those days I enjoyed all types of music even so called "white rock", New Wave, but I would be condemn for liking those styles. That started to change slowly in the mid 80's then more white kids started to declare "rap" as their favorite music and blasting it from their car steros. That was a shock to me. My Dad told me that experience was like the early rock & roll music which was called "Jungle Music", N----- Music, black music before the 50's. That music was Southern blues by black artist going way back to the 1800's. Thanks to Elvis et al who re-recorded those older blues boogie woogie songs. Also thanks thanks to the English invasion which borrowed music and styles from bluesman Lighting Hopkins, Rock n Roller Bo Diddley et al. They started copying their performance styles like those black musicians
rock n roll became more accepted by white america. We must remember Elvis was hated by whites we he started off for playing and dancing "like that." I kinda miss the heavy sythed music. 80's music was alot of and dancable. Now most music is dark and have an hopeless message. Music need to go back to being fun and experimental like the 80's. What happen to the flashy clothes?

Posted by bright eyes:
What really sticks in my mind is the fact that I love rock and heavy metal and that never changed. I don't like all of that new music. Hard Rock and Heavy Metal will forever rule in my mind.
I remember wearing those leg warmers and friendship pins and feathers on roach clips. I also wore bandanans around my legs and around my waist as a belt. Also, the large patches of your favorite band on the back of your fav jean jacket. I am now 32 and I really miss the eighties. I was glad to grow up and be part of it.

the mullet is still around, sure it became bery popular in the 70s,but it wasnt until the eighties where the mullet was accepted in higher social circles, finally the corporate yuppies could have the long hair of their youth, but with the top and sides short,it wasnt shaggy enough to offend, and it has been proven that mullets grow better when given a good dose of daily power ballads, this inspires the mullet to grow light and fluffy,as opposed to its slightly grimy predesessor, the late 70's metal mullet, which is one of the most feared mullets about.
Posted by aG:
I don't know about that huh. Sure there were a lot of fads but a lot of things in the 80's have proven to have more staying power then the 90's.
Posted by Specter:
The 80's is alive in many different places. Hair and music particularly. Without the developments in the 80's, rock wouldn't have had the opportunity to evolve into what it is now. Contributors: Depeche Mode, Nirivana, Pearl Jam, The Fixx, and many others. Oh, and lets not forget ATARI! Yeah baby, Centipede! But it was good to see the 80's go and give flavor for the next decade. Turn into the 90's. And the God awful new millenium.

no there were Jeeps and Scouts and Bronco's but the SUV phenomenon is new as a family car soccer mom driving machine. People had vans or wagons as family cars The older jeeps and scouts were rough not the luxury cruisers of today. We had a big ass van with a retactable dining table and an Impala
Posted by GREENMUSE:
now THATS what bad ass vans are about!my dad had an old dodge van,not much nifty bout it,but it did have diamond shaped side windows, and matching roof vent.right now it sits in wv rusting away, slowly becoming one with the earth, perhaps giving shelter to passing hobos.

I am a child of the 80's bring em back I say, I want to snort coke, drink champagne and drve a 325i convertible. where I grew up the 80's were a beautiful beautiful thing conspicuous consumtion at its finest, not quite the same as the tech boom of the 90's which was sort of nerdy. The 80's were about big wasteful beautiful and ultmately distructive things and when they ended and everybody had to sell thier boats and drive japaneese again..switch to pot and beer... well it sucked. Did not survive from my 80's Izod Tennis Whites, seedy Times Square, Punk The East Village, hot Christy Brinkley, rocking Metallica, Artists in SOHO Things we did not have: SUV? What's that? Internet? Computers are for nerds (remember Logo anyone?) Abercrobie was for old WASPs, Starbucks...

the "every other decade" theory is just a way of re-hasing old trends into something new (i.e. "retro") so various conglomerates can make your money theirs all over again. in 2010 (assuming the human race doesn't die out by then), the 90's will be kool again. i say screw that, live for the now, not then.
Posted by aG:
Trendkill... you are right. They may still be around but I will forver think of OP as an 80's thing. Gotta love those old cordaroy shots, of course you had to wear them with palm tree Vans! Add Town & Country and Maui & Sons to that list. I totally forgot about those until you mentioned it.

You are completely right Rory. Please tell me what to think. I want to walk around in ignorance just like you. seriously, I don't claim to know everything man, they asked why I was goofin on Bon Jovi and made the point about their songwriting so I just responded. watch rock n roll jeopardy and you too can enter into rock n roll debates!
Posted by Rory:
Jesus Christ ag! Can't anyone win an arguement with you? Dude you must not do much in your free time to have all the time to know all this useless crap about music. who in the hell cares who wrote songs that became hits and who knows this crap?
Posted by aG:
It was a joke people, relax. Although Bon Jovi never did it for me, I will say they were a lot better than some of the other bands of that period, for whatever that's worth. Songwriting? Hum, I don't know, Bon Jovi's songwriting never blew my mind but their hits were well crafted to be just that. Not sure who gets the most credit there, Bon Jovi or Desmond Child. You have to remember Desmond Child sure did churn out the hits there in the 80's too, Bon Jovi, KISS (heaven's on fire, hide your heart, I was made for loving you).., Joan Jett (hate myself for loving you), hell he wrote or co-wrote most of Aerosmith's hits (dude looks like a lady, angel, crazy, etc...) but then you have to remember some of crimes desmond is responsible for in the 90's and on.. Ricky Martin (la vida loca, she bangs), sisqo (thong song), hanson (weird). so just giving credit where credit is do.
