The final installment in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy was the Lord of the Screen this holiday weekend, bringing the film close to a $500 million gross in less than two weeks.

New Line Cinema, producers of the film, released estimates on Sunday that show the film has brought in an impressive $492.1 million since it was released. This third installment has performed better than the first two films in the series and New Line is looking for the film to gross over $1 billion.  The first film in the series, The Fellowship of the Ring grossed $865 million.

How did the other films that hit theatres this extended holiday weekend do? Very well, when the dust settled and estimates were made, it appears that a new record was set for Christmas weekend.

The new Steve Martin comedy "Cheaper by the Dozen," clenched the number two spot. No doubt aided by a cast of popular players including Hillary Duff, Ashton Kutcher and Bonnie Hunt. The film brought in $28.2 million for the weekend.

The Civil War drama "Cold Mountain" landed in third with $14.5 million gross for the weekend. "Something's Gotta Give" followd close behind with a $14.2 million gross.

Ben Afflecks new one Paycheck came in fifth with a $13.9 million gross for the weekend.

Universals $100 million adaptation of Peter Pan fell flat with earnings of $11.4 million for the weekend, landing the film in 7th place.
