Velvet Revolver Needs Good Time Axl Rose
(Rock News Desk) If Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor had got the job of singing with Velvet Revolver, he'd have "bridged the gap" between Axl Rose and Scott Weiland, he insists. And he believes it would have allowed the band to enjoy themselves much more than when they worked with the two wayward singers.

Taylor says it's important to give fans what they want, and that's what he'd have done. "I would have tried to basically build a bridge between what they had with Axl and what they had with Scott, but with a little more good-time feel to it.

"I think in a lot of ways they could have relaxed a little bit, knowing they wouldn't have to worry about, 'What's the singer going to do? Are we going to be able to go on stage on time? Are we going to be able to play our show without a fit being thrown?" more on this story

John Fogerty In New TV Series Premiere
(Gibson) Fans of John Fogerty will want to tune in to the debut of Fox's new TV series, The Finder, when the show debuts tonight (January 12). Fogerty not only wrote the show's theme song; he scored a guest role as an actor in the opening episode.

"The producers of the show, I guess they're big fans and had this idea that they wanted me to play a character," Fogerty said in an interview with Billboard.com. "They had a storyline that was inspired, I guess, by some events in my real life. And then as things rolled along, they asked me to create a theme for their show."

Fogerty also performed a stripped-down version of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son" for the episode. The track will be posted for free download on his website one week after the show airs. The veteran rocker went on to reveal that he's been recording original material for a new album that will include such guests as Brad Paisley, Miranda Lambert and the Foo Fighters. more on this story

The Inspiration For Chickenfoot's Different Devil
(Rock News Desk) Sammy Hagar has revealed how a 70-year-old man's relationship with his long-time wife and his young girlfriend inspired him to finish a song which was about to be dumped from Chickenfoot's new album.

The track Different Devil from Chickenfoot III had a melody and arrangement but no lyrics, and after realising he had no ideas for the subject matter, singer Hagar retired to his hideaway in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, ready to abandon the entire piece.

That's when he ran into his friend. "There's an older gentleman I know," Hagar explains. "He's in his seventies and he's got this young girlfriend and she's hot. But he's been married for his whole life and he lives with his wife part-time. I don't know what's going on.

"But I say, 'Why don't you just move in with this chick, man? She's hot!' And he goes, 'Same hell, different devil.'" more on this story

Anniversary of Bee Gee Maurice Gibb's Death
(Gibson) On this day in 2003, Singer-songwriter Maurice Gibb from the Bee Gees died at age 53 in Miami, Florida following a heart attack during abdominal surgery. Gibson takes a look back:

In the Bee Gees, Maurice Gibb was always known as "the quiet one." But it was his death, on this day in 2003, that silenced one of the most enduring and popular groups in music history. Although surviving brothers Barry and Robin Gibb have occasionally reunited since to perform together, most would agree that the Bee Gees will never be the same without Maurice.

Maurice was born on December 22, 1949 and was the fourth of five Gibb children, but only just barely. His twin brother Robin was born 35 minutes before him. Maurice (pronounced "Morris") grew up in England in the '50s, until the family moved to Brisbane, Australia in 1958 just after the birth of youngest brother Andy. As a kid, Maurice, along with older brother Barry and twin brother Robin, began singing to make a little extra money. The trio first called themselves the Rattlesnakes and then Wee Johnny Hayes & the Bluecats. They were introduced to a radio DJ, Bill Gates, by Bill Goode, a racetrack promoter who had seen the boys perform at Brisbane's Speedway Circuit. Gates renamed the group the Bee Gees after his and Goode's initials (and not the Brothers Gibb, as some once thought).

The trio did pretty well for themselves in the early '60s in Australia, with the oldest brother Barry getting plenty of attention for his songwriting skills (hence the title of their 1965 debut LP, The Bee Gees Sing and Play 14 Barry Gibb Songs). The year after their debut, the boys decided to move back to the U.K. In advance of their arrival, their father had sent demos to Beatles manager Brian Epstein. He, in turn, passed them along to Robert Stigwood, who helped orchestrate a five-year contract with Polydor Records in England and ATCO Records in the U.S. more on this story

Gibson Acoustic Master Luthier Ren Ferguson Retires
(Gibson) After 25 years of service to Gibson Guitar's acoustic division, Master Luthier Ren Ferguson has retired from the company. Ferguson joined Gibson when, in 1986, the company acquired Flatiron Mandolin, where he was head luthier. For the last quarter-century, he has spearheaded building and design for Gibson Acoustic in Bozeman, Montana.

"I will always be a Gibsonite at heart," Ferguson said. "These guitars are a part of who I am. The tradition of decorative art that are a hallmark of Gibson fits perfectly with my interests in engraving and carving."

Gibson would like to extend our sincere and deep appreciation to Ferguson for his years of commitment, passion and tireless enthusiasm for the acoustic guitars built in Bozeman.

"What we've learned from Ren combined with the support from Gibson allows us to continue crafting the highest quality acoustic instruments," said Dennis O'Brien, general manager for Gibson Acoustic. "We are blessed to have enjoyed his energy, optimism and humor for the past 25 years. He will always be a friend to Gibson." more on this story
