Day in Pop Report for 08/27/2014
While Diana was killed as a result of a crash while she was being chased by photographers, Bieber's run-in seems to be less dramatic with reports that the accident occurred when the popstar hit his brakes after he spotted the photographer following his Ferrari. ABC Radio reports that it appears that it was only a minor traffic accident and Bieber's Ferrari was only scratched. Following the accident, the upset popstar took to twitter to share his frustration over the incident. He tweeted, "There should be laws against what I just experienced. We should have learned from the death of Princess Diana. I don't have a problem with Paparazzi but when they act recklessly they put us all in danger." Read the ABC report here.
Helt took to the VMA stage Sunday night (August 24), delivering an unforgettable moment when he accepted on "behalf of 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth who are starving lost and scared right now I know this because I am one of these people." Check out the tracklist, and the dates for the band's extensive fall tour here.
In the segment, the Mandatory Fun singer added his own spin to the opening theme of Mad Men, singing "Jon Hamm's never won an Emmy/Oh, who cares, he's still Jon-freaking-Hamm." Throw to a shot of Hamm agreeing, yes, he is in fact Jon-freaking-Hamm. He then revamped the themes to Modern Family, Scandal and Homeland singing "Inigo Montoya grew a beard!" The best moment though had to be his take on the Game of Thrones theme song. Though he did not dedicate the nearly two-minute long theme to Peter Dinklage (that's already been done) he did draw attention to GoT's staples: dragons and boobs. "Here come dragons galore/And some boobs," he sang. "OK, to be fair, there's way more boobs." He then George RR Martin, the man behind A Song of Ice and Fire series, which is the inspiration for the HBO show, to get writing and quick to finish the last books. Even delivering a typewriter right to his seat so he could work during the show. Martin played along, typing on the archaic looking machine. "Type, George, type as fast as you can," Al sang. Days later, Riley's mother sent a letter to Albany, N.Y. radio station WGNA to explain what it was like attending the concert with her son, and how much Bryan's music affects Riley. "When Riley pretends to be Luke, he is a whole other person," his mother Marjorie wrote. "He's not afraid or shy. He has confidence and feels free. Every time Luke turned his hat around during the concert, so did Riley. On our way out of the show, Riley pulled me down and said 'I didn't know all the songs mommy. I need to learn all the songs.' He just loves music. Sorry for such a long letter, but I just want Luke and all other artists to know that their music is a powerful thing and truly helps those with disabilities to express themselves and get through rough parts of their day." Moved by the story, the station invited Riley and his mother into the studio. They had forwarded the letter to Bryan, who then called in during the visit to speak with Riley directly. Bryan said that during the concert, he was initially intrigued by the message on the shirt (which he admitted seeing from the stage). And later, he was truly moved once he found out what that message meant. "I'm kinda having some tears on the bus here," Bryan admitted. During the call, Riley can be seen bouncing around the studio with a big smile on his face. Watch it all unfold here.
Rock and Roll pioneer Chuck Berry was unable to attend the ceremony due to illness and Dave Edmunds received the honor on his behalf. Edmunds read a speech prepared by Berry. He said, "Unfortunately I am unable to travel, but my heart is in Sweden. I want to thank the King and the Royal Family for awarding me the Polar Prize. I understand what a great honor it is to be a recipient. I am sorry that I am unable to travel and receive this personally." Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards recorded a special video message in Chuck Berry's honor for the event. Richards said, "Chuck Berry, he just leapt out of the radio at me. I ate him basically, I mean I breathed him, it wasn't just food, he was the air I breathed for many years when I was learning guitar and trying to figure out how you could be such an all-rounder. "Such a great voice, such a great player, and also such a great showman, you know, it was all in one package, so basically if I listened to Chuck Berry I was full for the day. The other recipient of the prize this year, American opera and theatre director Peter Sellars was on hand to collect his Prize from King Carl XVI of Sweden. In his acceptance Sellars said, "Thank you for this overwhelming AwardI must dedicate this Prize to my musical families who have adopted me, taught me, have been patient, generous and inspiring beyond anything that I could have imaginedLiving with music every day is already the most astonishing gift anyone could ask for."

"Shotgun Rider" is a midtempo song with a cool, confident melody that feels tailor-made for a road-trip mixtape. It's the latest song from the country superstar's upcoming studio album Sundown Heaven Town, which is due to hit stores Sept. 16. "This is one of those songs that really paints a picture and sets a mood," McGraw said in a press statement. "In my mind, you look over and see the person that you love next to you sitting in the front seat, and you think, 'How good do I have it? Life is perfect.' There is a certain warmth to this song and several others like it that really establish the tone for the whole album." McGraw previously recorded a song called "Shotgun Rider" on his 2007 album Let It Go (in another duet with Faith Hill), but the current single is a brand-new song. More details here.
Grouplove frontman Christian Zucconi wrote the new track for the show and had this to say about it, "I am honored to be part of such an incredible project that involves so many talented people. "The creators of the show brought me to the animation studios where I watched a teaser that began to unveil the complex character of BoJack. Pretty sure he is every artist's worst nightmare, but regardless I find myself rooting for him. It was fun to write a song for BoJack because it needed to combine the highs and lows that come with life but still be catchy as hell." The show's executive producer Noel Bright adds, "As huge fans of Grouplove, we were thrilled when Christian and the band agreed to create an original song for BoJack Horseman" "As soon as we heard the song, we knew it would be a perfect end credit theme that would add an extra layer to the show - it's catchy, fun and memorable, which are hallmarks of a Grouplove song." Grouplove also announced that they will be performing on the September 17th episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers. Until then, check out their new song here.
The new song, "Homegrown Honey", is the first single released from Rucker's new album, which is expected in early 2015. The single was released to country radio and released to all digital retailers. Darius had this to say about the track, "This is the first time I've gotten to write with my buddy Charles Kelley and their [Lady Antebellum's] producer Nathan Chapman and I'm sure glad we did!" The forthcoming album once again reunited Rucker with producer Frank Rogers who produced Darius three previous solo country albums, which all topped the Billboard Country Album chart and spawned six No. 1 singles.
Yesterday (August 26), the writer and the subject of that 1992 song have decided to call it quits, with Neil and Pegi Young deciding to divorce after 36 years of marriage. According to Rolling Stone, Young filed for divorce on Tuesday in their city of residence, San Mateo, California. Pegi Young has been more than just Neil Young's wife over the years. She served as Young's background singer beginning in the '90s and co-founded the Bridge School in 1986, inspired when their son, Ben, had trouble finding a school after being born with cerebral palsy. Due September 29 (September 30 in North America), the remastered set will be available as a standard CD and digital download, LP, an expanded 3-disc version and digital download, and a Super Deluxe box set. The follow-up to band's smash debut album, 1994's "Definitely Maybe", remains Oasis' biggest-selling album with 22 million copies sold worldwide. "I've spent my fair share of time at Losers (Bar & Grill) in Nashville," Young admitted in a press release. "As a songwriter I like to always be observing the world around me because you never know where you'll find inspiration, and I've seen moments like what I sing about in 'Lonely Eyes' go down all the time." "Lonely Eyes" is set during a typical night at a local tavern. At the start, the bartender yells at a patron for lighting up a "cheap cigar" inside. Then the entire establishment crushes on a girl who walks in for a glass of wine. While the subject matter and the setting did grab his attention, Young admitted that wasn't the only reason he chose to cut the song. Read what he said here.
"I'm in the whole songwriting and song-picking process," she told Billboard. "We're in the very early stages of working on it. It's always great to have new music out-to freshen up the set list, and it's exciting for the country fans. They are always eager to have new music." Pickler said when she works on an album, she typically lives with the music for a year. "Then you send it off for the copies to be made, and the artwork to be produced and distributed. That takes months," she said. "So you've lived with the album for almost a year before anyone hears it. Then, by the time it comes out, you're ready for the next one, because you've sung it a million times-but not for anyone outside of your circle." While she didn't give any clues as to the direction she's headed, she did reveal what it was like to perform with Kenny Rogers last October. Read about that here.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Scherzinger opened up about her forthcoming sophomore album. "Because I've just worked with The Dream and Tricky and it is cohesive, we've created a sound," she told Digital Spy. "We found a sound. We found a Nicole sound. So when you hear a couple of the songs you'll be like, 'Woah, that doesn't sound like any other artist out there. Any other formula of song out there. Any other beat out there.' I feel like it's DNA'd to me." Listen here.
Sitting down at a keyboard, acoustic guitar in hand, shirt off, the Biebz gets low and sings "Ring of Fire."
