Day in Pop Report for 01/30/2014
According to CNN, the assault charge stems from an encounter with a limousine driver last month. The singer traveled to Toronto to be booked on the charge and will appear in court at a later date. As of right now, police are not publicly confirming any details of the case against Bieber. Reporter Katie Simpson with Canadian news station CP24 was on the scene and took a photo of Bieber being booked. See it and read more here.
According to Billboard, Miley is embracing her Nashville roots and giving her fans country friend renditions of her songs like "4 x 4," "Do My Thing" and "#Getitright." She will also cover Dolly Parton's "Jolene," a song she covered in 2012, proving she hadn't lost her country flair just yet. The hour-long special, which has Miley stripping her songs down to their bare bones, is meant to "let people know she can sing," her manager, Larry Rudolph told Billboard. The set, designed by Miley herself, is even barn themed with bales of hay and a dancing horse, which reportedly she does twerk with. Seems Miley isn't ready to twerk off into the sunset just yet. In a new backstage clip, Miley says she was surprised that Madonna agreed to "doing this hoe down thing," but she sees a connection between herself and the Material Girl. See what she had to say.
McGraw and Lambert each received seven nominations, while Urban received six. Other top nominees include Lee Brice, Kacey Musgraves, Blake Shelton, and Taylor Swift, who each received five nominations; the groups Florida Georgia Line and Lady Antebellum, which each received four; and Luke Bryan and Darius Rucker, who each received three. Nominees this year for Entertainer of the Year, the ACM's highest honor, are Lambert, Shelton, Swift, Bryan (the ACM's currently reigning Entertainer of the Year) and George Strait. This is a fan-voted category; voting begins Monday, March 24 at 3pm ET at VoteACM.com, and it closes during the live ACM Awards broadcast, which takes place Sunday, April 6 on CBS. Voting is also currently open on that same site for the previously announced list of New Artist of the Year semi-finalists. Strait was nominated in just one category (Entertainer of the Year), as was Jason Aldean, who has been an Entertainer of the Year nominee in years past. Aldean earned a Male Vocalist of the Year nomination, a category he won last year. Brice set a new personal record for nominations this year, earning a total of five, including Male Vocalist of the Year, his first time in that prestigious category. Musgraves earned her second Female Vocalist of the Year nomination, as well as Album of the Year honors for her GRAMMY-winning Same Trailer, Different Park. "This #1 is the most unexpected one I've ever had," Perry says in a statement. "Dark Horse" has been a dark horse of a song, since August when the KatyCats voted to release it early on iTunes, before PRISM even came out. I'm so thrilled and grateful to have these moments." The song hit the top of the charts after Perry performed "Dark Horse" on the Grammy Awards broadcast on Sunday. She is currently kicking off rehersals for her upcoming Prismatic World Tour, which will launch in the UK on May 7, before coming to North America on June 22 for a four month run.
The petition, plainly titled "Deport Justin Bieber and revoke his green card," ends by making their intentions extremely clear with a nod from the U.S. Constitution thrown in for good measure: "We the people would like to remove Justin Bieber from our society." While the document might seem like a practical joke, the petition has passed the 100,000-signature mark required to get an official response from the administration, earning a total of 108,346 signatures at the time of publication. But the Beliebers are not a fan group who would take this unjust motion to deport their favorite pop star lying down. So they've countered with their own petition. The "Stop Justin Bieber from getting deported. He is a human being and he makes mistakes. He does not deserve this" petition, created on Jan. 25, currently has 1,631 signatures. The pro-Bieber petition still needs a total of 98, 369 signatures, before the 30-day deadline on Feb. 24, to be eligible for a response from the administration. more on this story
"We're working on one now," Nelson told Billboard, adding that they'll release it "as soon as we get it together." Such a recording project would be a first for the three country legends, who are all members of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Haggard has hinted before that an idea of doing something together has already been in the works between the three of them. In a 2010 interview with Rolling Stone he even gave the proposed trio a name, the Musketeers - "You know, because there's the three of us," he said. "We'll come up with some little way of describing ourselves I guess and put it together into a show." more on this story
Many of those sued were fans who uploaded Prince's material on personal Facebook pages and fan sites including Purple House, Purple Kiss and Funky Experience 4.0. On several forums, Prince fans expressed their disappointment at these lawsuits, which targeted many of his fans personally. On Prince.org, one fan wrote, "Yes bootlegging is wrong, but who is next? Dude will even go after regular ass fans really sad." Meanwhile, another asserted, "Prince will be remembered for making some of the most beautiful music ever created and for hating his fans." Perhaps in an effort to win fans over, Prince just released a teaser of "PRETZELBODYLOGIC" from his forthcoming album, Plectrum Electrum, which is set for a spring release. Listen here.
In an interview with XXL this week, a very Zen Kendrick says he isn't upset about losing and doesn't hold a grudge against Macklemore, who admitted that he thought Kendrick was robbed. Macklemore even went as far as writing an apology text to K-Dot for beating him out for Best Hip-Hop album, in hopes to make amends. "It's well deserved; he did what he did, man," Kendrick said of Macklemore's four wins. "He went out there and hustled and grinded. Everything happens for a reason; the universe comes back around, that's how it go." The Compton rapper than touched on complaints that the GRAMMYs tend to undervalue the work of hip-hop artists, giving a classy response that should win him the title of official spokesperson for hip-hop. "It was a crazy day & my friends & family over here are still freaking out," she writes. "I just wanted to say thank you for the time you've given me these past 14 months. Finding out about me online or in between these pages or in your headphones." Adding, "Without your support, there's no way I would ever have gotten to stand in the middle of the Staples Centre & perform in my school shoes." Lorde took home two gramophones at Sunday night's GRAMMYs, including Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Royals." She also wowed the crowd with her stark and simple performance of the hit single. more on this story
"Who the f*** told them that they was like Nicki? Oh no b****es didn't," she proclaims. "I'm gonna give b****es a minute to shine and tell them good riddance." That's before she reveals her master plan: "Girls is plottin', what more could they steal?/ tell Justin Timberlake that I'm coming for Jessica Biel." Minaj is currently working on a mixtape and a new album, which she said will have less pop tracks than her previous album, 2012′s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, a reissue of her 2010 debut. The spot encourages fellow fashion killas to Tweet their draft picks using the hashtag #DKNYDRAFT. Since the 2014 NFL draft isn't until May, we've got to assume they're talking fashion draftright? Rocky also made the cut to appear in the brightly colored and NYC-centric spring campaign for the brand. The sports-themed spot, shot in Times Square, marks the brand's return to that location. Previously the brand unveiled a 2014 resort campaign from the center of New York City featuring Rita Ora. See the photo here.
Alec and Hilaria giving an update on how 5 month old baby Carmen is doing. AJ asking if her personality is coming out and who she takes after. Alec saying, "She's flexible like her mother." Hilaria, "She's very flexible, she fell asleep with her feet in her mouth the other day." Alec also setting the record straight about posting "Flying from Nassau, Bahamas 2 NY. TSA 'random selects' my 5 month old daughter 4 a pat down. I am not kidding. #travelinginUSisadisgrace," to Twitter after Carmen was patted down by security in the airport in the Bahamas. Alec clarifying, "It's not TSA, US TSA, I used that word euphemistically, it's their version of the TSA and I had so many people attack me, and say don't you say that about the TSA, obviously I was meaning a form of TSA." The couple then talking about the daily yoga photos Hilaria has been posting on Instagram, dishing about the photo she took aboard their flight from the Bahamas, "Yesterdays pose, was my wife doing what is known as an airplane poseShe's very clever and she goes, oh I'm gonna stand up in the middle of the first class cabin of this flight from the Bahamas to New York, I'm gonna do airplane pose in the aisle and you look at the picture and the expression of the people are great because they're very real." The couple even demonstrating the pose for "Extra's" cameras. Hilaria continued, "Everybody thought it was funnyIt brought the whole first class cabin much closer together." On Saturday Alec will host the third annual NFL Honors where they will recognize the best players and moments of the 2013 season, "The NFL Honors is a lot of fun, we have a great time." more on this story
1) The "Roc Nation Is The New Motown" Route: We already have reason to believe this is the road Rihanna is heading down, considering she just dropped a new single with fellow Roc Nation management artist Shakira (which is sure to be added on to any new Rihanna album) and since Roc Nation label & management signee DJ Mustard said he's been working on a new album with her. Collabs we'd like to see from that pool of artists include: another banger with Calvin Harris (we're not over "We Found Love" yet), J. Cole on a verse, Meek Mill on a verse, a Haim remix and some kind of crazy, sexy, over-the-top Kylie Minogue track. And we're looking at potential production partners in the Roc Nation stable like Switch (Major Lazer, Beyonc, M.I.A.); Kuk Harrell, a longtime RiRi vocal producer (Justin Bieber, Usher, Mary J. Blige); and No I.D. (Kanye West's production mentor, Common, Jay Z). It's a lot like that Motown model, where Berry Gordy had his in-house stable of songwriters, producers and artists and they all worked together to make the biggest soul hits imaginable. Minus the part where Gordy kept most of the money. 2) Using Extreme Sex, But With The Idea of Normalizing Female Sexuality Route: Let's not kid ourselves into thinking Rihanna is going to pop out an album full of ballads. If her Instagram account taught us nothing in 2013, it was that Rihanna does not give an F. Or a PH, in her case. She's bringing us monster club hits. An interesting conversation popped up around the release of her self-directed "Pour It Up" video after the clip's original director, Vincent Haycock, took his name off the project. It was reviewed as being sort of not great and overly sexualized, but hold the presses: What if we're in for much, much more of that from Rihanna because she's trying to normalize the conversation around female sexuality? It's one Rihanna is ripe to lead. From chanting "cake, cake, cake, cake" to going topless on her album cover to the strip club in "Pour It Up" - she keeps pushing it one further, even when you think she's already at the edge of how far an artist can go with their own sexuality. If Lena Dunham normalizes different body types of Girls, wouldn't it be a nice surprise if Rihanna has been, all this time, very consciously normalizing the idea that women can desire sex/desire to be sexual beings? See three more directions she could go.
"Right now I'm focusing on this solo project and am super excited about it," she told Radio.com during record release week. "At the same time, I love that people have been super connected with Sugarland 'cause I am too. I didn't want to do a solo project out of a dislike for Sugarland. I love that music, I love what we've done in that project. And yet, at the same time, there's something else that I think I need to prove to myself and share something different with my fans too." Nettles' new album, That Girl, is comprised of 11 tracks, 10 of which she wrote herself as well as co-wrote with a diverse group of songwriters including Sara Bareilles, Richard Marx, Little Big Town's Phillip Sweet and Butch Walker, among others. "Musically and sonically, this album is much different than Sugarland," she said. "If one is going to record a solo album and it sounds just like your ensemble work. What is the point? Don't just record the same music and put a different name on it, that's silly. I wanted it to be different." Artistically, Nettles was ready to switch gears from Sugarland and enlisted famed producer Rick Rubin (Beastie Boys, Eminem, Rage Against the Machine) for help. She credits Rubin with allowing her to try things in a way she never has before. "Working with Rick Rubin on this album was liberating and exciting and sometimes terrifying and cathartic and also at the same time, very safe and warm and collaborative," she said. "I felt really safe with him to be able to hand these songs over and say, 'OK. How do you envision them?' That's a vulnerable place as a songwriter but I really wanted with this album to do things differently and to get out of my comfort zone." The album includes lead single "That Girl," which Nettles wrote with Butch Walker, as well as a beautiful ballad "This One's For You," which she wrote with Bareilles. Nettles explained that each co-write happened very organically. "I was very open. Interestingly enough, Sara Bareilles and I have been friends for a number of years now. When I was writing for this project I reached out to her and said, 'Hey you want to write with me for my new record?' It was fun after all these years of being friends. She also introduced me to Richard Marx since they had worked together. He's great, he's hilarious and super talented." more.
