(New York Daily NEws) It's no secret that traditional touring rockers hate the way media conglomerates, MTV and pop music have changed the face of music. But [Rosanna] Arquette's film [ "All We Are Saying."], which airs on Showtime on March 8, gathers together an overwhelming collection of testimonials on the subject by artists like Sting, Elton John, David Crosby, Steven Tyler, Peter Gabriel and Tom Petty.
"There was a time when our catalogue was worth $24 million, now it's worth like 12 cents," moans Tyler, Aerosmith's lead singer. "Why? Because anybody can download anything on the Internet. The only thing an artist today is worth is his happiness, integrity and hard tickets."
"When I look at it now, it looks like professional wrestling to me," whines Petty. Fans "know it's fake, but they don't really care." [see full story for the full article, it's a fun read]

I completely agree with Tyler about the Internet, But this trend of fake started a long time ago. Ever since the technology has been around; hundreds of manufactured stars have ruled the day. What do people expect when basically the whole industry and fans prop up certain stars who don't even play an instrument? Since the exposure of Milli Vanilli, lip syncing Fem bots have been churned out by the dozens with no moral objection by those who run things or the people buying the garbage. People are told what to like by the hype of media. Just like canned laughter for bad TV shows that tell people what's funny, kids are told what 'rocks' by the style of the media hype. Being forced to like what is on sale at the moment is what the pop rock business is all about and the dumber the audience, the easier it is to pull off the sale. Since the pop music audience has the shortest attention span and are completely wrapped up in a constant personal need for entertainment, they are the easiest to exploit and will buy anything they're told to. Unfortunately, the music tastes of most people are lock step with what the industry puts out. And thanks to ACID and other software, only anonymous studio people are needed for cheap tracks that can be recorded, bought and exploited for the hot steaming pile of pop songs now for sale. Real musicians are no longer needed. Of course, there is always a need for people who 'look' the part for those live pop shows. But beyond that, forget it. Bottom line is, if your a musician: Go underground and play your a$$ off for small crowds of outcasts who don't follow trends. They always appreciate real talent and they'll buy your disks when you make the effort to put one out. And though it doesn't pay that much you can make a living doing it if you try. There is nothing bad about that.
