By now, I am sure you have all heard the
news......”GASP! Jason Newsted LEFT Metallica!” “Oh my God!
He gave up the spot in the band!” “What the hell was he thinking?”
My guess is, Jason’s just tired, and I can’t say that I blame him one bit.
There is no denying that in terms of time
spent touring, and in terms of pure financial accounting, there are few
to none that are as big as Metallica has become in the last fifteen years.
While little boys and little girls dream of getting to where they are,
it’s not always what it’s cracked up to be. I remember when I was
young, Cliff dying, and then Metallica releasing “And Justice for All.”
Does anyone else remember how everyone blamed Cliff dying, and Jason being
the new guy, for their break into “sell out city” with the “One” video?
I remember people just BASHING Jason. If you listened to the things
some people were just saying, you would almost believe he engineered the
bus accident that had killed Cliff. It was just ridiculous, as it
often is in fandom. The rumors flew. The poor guy just kept
his mouth shut and let his music do the talking. It let up a bit
for the Black album, but it was seemingly never-ending. Then
when their old fans were revolted by the new look of “Load”, more and more,
it seemed that maybe Jason was the only metal fan left in Metallica.
The tide turned.
Meanwhile, Jason, always diligent and ready
with a smile, was shoved into the Meet and Greet position and became the
guy who always met the fans. He was out there every night, thanking
the fellow Metallica fans. After every show, you could find him giggling
like a schoolgirl because he was THE ultimate Metallica fan, signing autographs,
and listening to the fan’s stories. It would seem to me that Lars,
James and Kirk didn’t deem the fans important anymore. If you wanted
to meet the other three, your best bet was at the local strip club, never
backstage. If your friend told you they went backstage and “MET METALLICA!”,
they probably just met Jason. No matter how tired and weary he was,
though, he was there, and he won over every fan he ever met.
Then for me came the summer of 1996.
When Metallica headlined the Lollapalooza festival that was just too much
for me. Some guitar magazine interviewed Kirk, Lars, and James about
where THEY were going, and the bands that they had picked for the tour.
Needless to say, most of them were not metal, but that’s beside the point....what
the hell was Metallica doing hosting it in the first place? A travesty
all around. As I read, though, I was wondering, “Where the hell is
Jason??? Why aren’t they including him?”. I read on a few pages,
getting angrier and angrier, then came the kicker. In a small little
byline, tucked away in a corner, was a four or five paragraph interview
with Jason. That’s it. They asked him what bands
he had chosen for review. Good, serious metal and rock bands that
just needed a break. That’s who he chose. I can’t remember
them all offhand, but Voivod and Anthrax I believe were two of the choices,
and some other crunchy good metal bands. Basically, Metallica had
their chance to do their Ozzfest the year before Ozzy, but threw it away.
(Lars spent too much time on the phone with Oasis, sucking up, I bet.)
On top of things, in both articles both sides openly declared that Jason
wasn’t allowed to write much. Ten years after Jason joined the band.
If you worked at your job with no promotion for ten years, wouldn’t you
be a little miffed, no matter how much money you were making? It’s
a testament to him that you never heard about him totally flipping and
killing another member. (I will pay money for any untouched photograph
showing him bitch-smacking Lars, for the time Lars took it upon himself
to smack my ass at a bar.)
Not to mention the physical torture of
touring. Nobody has toured like Metallica over the last ten years.
That is a killer. Jason just simply needs a rest. Rumors abound
of illness, and to that I can just hope aren’t true. (If they are,
get well, buddy!) I think it’s a wise and mature decision he’s made,
and long overdue.
Okay, for the flip side, I can say that
nobody would know who Jason is had it not been for Metallica. You
ask kids today if they know Flotsam and Jetsam, and most likely they give
you a blank look. They gave him this lucrative job. They have
promoted his mug for the last fourteen years, and countless millions have
been rocked by his incredible stage presence. I still believe for
Jason to be a musician, and to be hired as one, and still not be free to
add his two cents worth, is a disgrace. I have personally heard of
the stupid grief Metallica gave him for writing a song for his good friends
in a band that will remain nameless. (You do the homework.)
In all of my English training, the only way I can sum up that is: “THAT’S
NOT COOL.” Just because James and Lars learned Pro-Tools does
NOT make them the greatest band on the planet. They have come far,
indeed, but as far as personality goes, they’re not going to win any contests
at the end. In fact, now I am just scared for the new guy, and how
hard he’s going to be laughed at when Metallica comes out with an Limp
Bizkit album. Just remember that, folks....and don’t be too hard
on him.
Jason, I hope you love your millions; you’ve
definitely earned them. We’ll be waiting to hear what you whip at
us.

I think it really sucks that Jason left the best band ever (in my humble opinion). He was an awesome bass player, and although I do still idolize Kirk, Lars and Jaymz, I think it sucks that they treated Jason like crap. I am really looking forward to when Echobrain's album comes out.

I agree with your article. I'm not a johnny come lately to Metallica. I've been a Metallica Fan since the release of Ride the Lightning (before they became huge). I had all the EP's but I became disenchanted with Load... I never Bought it or any Metallica Album Since...
The first Photo I saw of Jason he looked like Bon Jovi in the Back of a pickup with a scarf... He looks god-awful now. I hope he made lots of money and he gets some rest before he gets back into the Music.... Long Live the Loud!

What's really funny, is that because people watch a "Behind the Music" or buy sh!tloads of albums by a band.. they think they know the members of that band.. or in some way relate to that band.. it's just as sad as those "when I started my personal relationship with Jesus" commercials.. what the hell? how can you have a "personal relationship" with someone who may or may not have been alive 2000 years ago?.. and how can you think you know someone just because you've read an interview, or watched a documentary.. or listened to/viewed some of their artwork? the answer to that is: you can't.. -0

I agree with the article. Pure talent doesn't go away that easy. I am sure there are a few unintelligent people who don't even have the brains to know talent when they see it. Jason has talent and I commend him on his brave decision. How many flunkies are stuck to what some call bands in this rigged up day and age. look at fake ass ICP, Pantera, anyone who wears colors because they are stale. Jason rules.

lets get real, its only entertainment man. when pantera gets a new singer they will be able to entertain. you cant even compare the extremely long tours metallica have endured to the many breaks Pantera has taken so phil can keep a perfectly fitted tampon in his ass to help him squalk. Phil is probly a snitch. Get real, sports, politics, ratings(of any kind), media, its all rigged and its not in your best interest in the long run. Who made Metallica? The Fans.

Faded... does that mean that if James, Kirk and Lars died, and you replaced them with anonymous unskilled rappers who could barely play instruments, you could call them Metallica? Hey, if it's "just a bass player..."

If you don't, then shut you fat phucking yappers and let the people who actually enjoy the music. And as for the term "metal"? How juvenille is that? That was the 70's. And what you guys don't realize is if you move forward, you fear you are gonna bow down to some trend. Do some thing different, just like Metallica did. And to quote Hetfield: "We never wanted to limit ourselves. Limiting yourselves to please your audience is Bullsh!t." So phuck all of you here who hates anything that made it big. WE ARE SICK AND TIRED OF YOU IGNORANT PHUCKS THINK THAT YOUR "METAL" BANDS ARE KEEPING ONLY THE "TRUE METAL" ALIVE. DO US A FAVOR AND GO TO HELL.

Listen you ignorant fuk, Its this simple. Forget all those retarded little details that you bring up like: "Oh Lars was sucking up to Oasis" and "im jealous of his wife because I wish he would fuk me" and all that $hit. If you were a real fan, none of those things would concern you. Whether true or not. You would love the music, period. Whether they have long hair or short. Who cares if Lars, James, & Kirk got more of the spotlight. Oh well, life isnt fair. Just like how it isnt fair that you were born mentally retarded. Yes jason should have received more recognition. But dont go blaming MET. I'll bet you are just another one of those fuks who is angry about the whole crapster thing. Just get a damn life. Jason is awesome, and James, Kirk, and Lars are awesome. Im sure Jason is going to be awesome with his new "Echobrain" project. I cant wait to hear it. And i cant wait to hear the next Metallica album. Im hoping that whole article was some mistake. Just a bunch of typos that made sense by accident. You must have had your head so far up your @$$ that your teeth were blocking your view of the computer screen. Metallica is the best at what they do. They were with Cliff, they were with Jason, and they will be with whoever. Nothing else matters.

they are alternaca listen to fuel and then listen to a real metallica song then you will know why
Posted by unnamed:
Why are people calling Metallica "alternica"?
come on , Metallica is still the same band they were in the 80s.(except Cliff and Jason are gone, but still, they didn't change their name.) Sure Metallica isn't what they used to be in albums like MOP, but that doesn't mean they sold out. They are simply experimenting with musical styles. I like new and old Metallica alike, but they didn't sell out to be like an "alternitive band" They are NOT alternitive!
Posted by the max:
That's because since the Beatles we've been subjected to countless manufactured shyt trends that never cease to exist. So of course when Mettalica, who were praised as the saviors of metal, went and changed into something completely different than what they were doing, would be labled sellouts. I think that the people who were so quick to label them sellouts need to examine why they listen to the music in the first place.
Posted by MaxPower324:
I have two things to say. Why are so many people comparing Jason to Cliff? Jason isn't Cliff and he never said he was. I think they are both excellent bassists. Next, why are so many Metallica fans crying 'sellout' after Load? I thought that is was experimentation that made a band great. The Beatles experimented and changed their music and were praised for it, but when Metallica tried it, they were crucified BY THEIR OWN FANS!
Posted by Riff:
I think lars should be shot, I like how James is trying to be like Dimebag now with the long goat, next he'll dye it red and act like he made it up. Pantera Rules Metalligreed. Cliff Rules.

Metallica began it's long slow decline with the black album. Maybe Jason did not have too much input into writing or what got recorded, but unlike Cliff, he sure as hell was there for it. You share the ride ya pay the fare! To me it seems like after Cliff died the band started becoming more commercial, another band that got fat, and soft. It's a shame but not a surprise.

Thanks dude, jason was great and we'll miss him a bunch. as far as metallica goes, i think that they were a great band and they have the potential to still be a good band, but as billy corgan so rightly said, "all things must surely have to end, great loves will someday have to part." later
Posted by Metallica_ Bi_atch:
You are correct in that the other band members dumped on Jason in the begining, but he was equal in the end. He had to work alot harder to earn the respect of the other band members. I for one think he held his own just fine! And you are also correct in saying that Jason was the guy who was there for the fans. And the reason behind that was that he was indeed the ultimate fan. :) have anything to add? feel free to e mail me at metallica_bi_atch@antimusic.

I think that Jason left for a rest mostly because of the hard time he got over the years after becoming Cliff's replacement and I think it was a very brave decision. If not, I hope it's not an illness or anything bad like that.
Good luck to Jason and to Metallica!

I like Metallica and all of thier albums (exluding Garage, Inc.) and I hate it when people cal them sellouts just for trying something new, or different. God forbid a band wants to experiment with their music. But I do realize that when you see a name like Metallica and know what they're about, you don't expect bluesy hard rock. I didn't expect it, but I did like it... And, after all, wasn't Metallica always in it for the money???
Posted by the guy on the couch(John A):
Oh, before i get back to my couch, go to my band's site at http://listen.to/lostconcept and check out my other rant on today's music scene, it's the link on the main page that says something like "click here to check out avino's essay on the music scene"
Posted by the guy on the couch(John A):
Ahem..I like metallica. I enjoy basically every song in their library...except mabey mama said. I'm glad they changed styles for the Load and ReLoad albums; the "Master of Puppets" sound was the best and always will be, yet I think it would have lost it's punch if Metallica hadn't decided to broaden their horizons and kept playing speed metal. So what if their new sound has commercial appeal? It's still far superior to the garbage being churned out by the Limp Bizkit's and NSync's of today's music scene. I despise those "Underground" people who would worship an underground band and then ditch them as soon as they sold some albums because they feel that the they have "sold out". That's just sad. I listen to music for the music. I could care about the band's appearance-(i.e.-load haircuts), or who they're suing. In fact, if Metallica openly admitted that they were buttf*cking each other, I would still listen to them. If the Backstreet Boys came out with a good album(::snickers::), with good songs that actually have some passion and meaning(::snickers again:::), i'd buy it. Get what i'm saying? Music should be the top priority, and that seems to be an idea that today's music consumers don't get. The scene has a great contrast. You have the backstreet boys, nsync, britany spears and co. on one side with screaming girls, and "the underground" with bands like slipknot, limp bizkit, korn, ect., yet they're really not underground considering the fact that they've all gone platinum several times. And if it's not full of screaming and down-tuned guitars, it's "wimpy". I'm the guy(on the couch) in the middle of all this. Like I said before, I could care if the guys(or gals) preforming the music were as ugly as sewer rats, and I really would like to hear some singing and melody instead of rapping or screaming. Inteligent lyrics do help, and it'd be nice if the band could preform live without the aid of any pre-recorded material(and actually sound good). As a result of my preferences, I like a wide range of music. Metallica to the Dave Mathews Band, Sevendust to Radiohead, Creed to Staind-they all have created some great music. Now you might feel like bashing me because of my musical interests, and I say go ahead. Because I could really give a damn. Now i'm going back to my couch.

Oh my fukking god...thank you Onikage for saying "Popmetal" now I will never hear the end of that fukking word...people like you are the reason bands like Slipknot get shyt on by brainless morons, who think every band who sells over 250 records is a sellout...you think everything is so goddamn trendy. Grow the fukk up!!! Stop telling everyone how trendy metal is...go away and leave metal the hell alone.
Posted by Onikage:
Load. Load of shi*t... Reload. Reload of shi*t... Metallica has just been going down hill for years, regardless of who died and who was ushered in. The band is beating a dead horse. So they decided to pick up some of soundgardens fans with their new polished for grunge/record sales look. Metal Lisa and limp rap meets metal are both a joke. A big fat damn joke. Popmetal. Yeah that sounds good. It should sell a million.

I happen to agree with Holiday. I wish I had a nickel for everytime I heard someone trash Jason and blame him for the changes in the band. Lets face it they treated him like a hired gun sort of the way KISS treated Eric Carr, Singer, Bruce Kulick, Vinnie Vincent and Mark St John.

ya know, i must say i am quite impressed with this editorial. i had a feeling it would be just a typical 'bash metallica' rant..but i was wrong. as a matter of fact, it's well written and contains a lot of truths. anyone who knows me (or has read any of my past rantings) knows that i am a huge fan of metallica and an especially huge fan of Jason. It always bothered me that people more or less hated Jason because he "took Cliffs spot". look, everyone, as tragic as it is, Cliff is DEAD and he isn't coming back. we have to deal with this fact. Jason had nothing to do with it, it's not his fault. We need to grow up on this point. As far as Jason and the rest of the band goes, yes, his talent has more or less been held back for 15 years. Those of us who were lucky enough to catch one of the Sanitarium shows that he filled in for James on realize this. Jason will be sadly missed by those of us who are REAL and true metallica fans, those who didn't hop on the bandwagon with One or the black album and hoped off on load. Metallica has hit snags before (i.e.: Cliff) and will hit snags in the future. I wish Jason the best of luck in whatever he does and I just hope he left the band on good terms. My only regret though is that I never got to meet him either of the two times I saw Metallica live. So..long live Jason.

Jason wrote a Sepultura song. Too bad it was on a Maxless album. Still was a killer album and a killer song.
Posted by Ozzman:
you deserved to be shot. Jason and Metallica forever. Metallica loves their fans, and Jason happened to be the main connection. and how about this- on Load and REload, jason talked about him writing songs there, him actually getting a chance to put in the notes he wanted to. Jason loves Metallica. Metallica was his life and if ever knew the band, you know they loved Jason as much. don't you think that is everything that was writen in the article was true, Jason would have ditched out after Load or REload? that's the music Jason loves. that's what Metallica loves. end of story. one other thing- without lars Ulrich, Metallica doesn't exist. get that through your goddamn head. you obviously don't know you're Metallica history. watch the behind the music on em sometime. listen to the things Jason and Lars and everyone else that knows them say. watch a year an a half in the life of Metallica sometime. Jason and Metallica were (and stil are) family. one more thing- METALLICA WILL NEVER MAKE A F*CKING LIMP DICKTWIST ALBUM. they are metal and always will be
