Singled Out: J.Ven's Barely Alive
.
R&B/pop artist J.Ven recently released his brand new single "Barely Alive" and to celebrate we asked him (Javen Smith) to share the story behind the track with us. Here is the story: "Barely Alive" is the first song I released this year and I think it's really indicative of the kind of music that I'm creating right now. At the end of 2016 I knew that I wanted to record an EP but I was lacking direction. I was really reaching for things outside of me to spark the creative process but it really wasn't working-I was looking for something outside of myself. Last summer when I started writing "Barely Alive" with Mia Minichiello and Matias Mora (both extremely talented and hard-working musicians-and wonderful friends as well!) I tried to come into the writing process with an objective. I wanted to create this upbeat pop song with a lot of energy. Unfortunately, at the time I was also going through the end of a relationship. So here I was, trying to make a "happy" song, when that wasn't my truth. In a way "Barely Alive" was therapeutic to me because it offered me a way of emoting the state I was in at that time. I think all three of us felt that in the writing space and that's what made the song blossom into what it was. What makes "Barely Alive" so special to me is that it's really a testament to the kind of material I want to continue making and a good introduction to what my EP will be like. "Barely Alive" is about recognizing my feelings and owning up to the fact that I was hurt. That kind of honesty and truth is what I want all my music to have. I want it to speak to the reality of the ups and downs of living a life. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about the J.Ven right here!
