Cousteaus debut album is a collection
of beautiful torch songs reminiscent of a Harry Connick, Jr. or Dean
Martin style lounge act. While this isnt the kind of music I typically
listen to, there is no denying its quality. Liam McKahey rich and
soulful vocals coupled with the understated accompaniment is seductive.
Liam turns the microphone over to the groups chief songwriter Davey Ray
Moor for a couple of songs such as Mesmer with Moor sounding closer to
Cat Stevens than Dean Martin, it offers a nice contrast to the other songs.
It may be a daunting task for this style
of music to hit a critical mass here in the 21st century, Cousteau do the
genre proud and offer up an album full of songs that are compelling enough
to easily crossover to the adult contemporary charts. Who knows, Brian
Setzer brought about the resurgence of Swing, Cousteau may just be the
band that brings Traditional Pop back into the mainstream. It only takes
one listen to know that the quality is there.
