The Top 5 Reasons Grunge Died

5) Half of the bands are in jail on drug charges
4) the other half are in rehab
3) The KISS reunion. After seeing KISS in action, most music fans become
reluctant to shell out $50.00 to see a bunch of guys standing around on stage in T-shirts and jeans. They want to go see a SHOW.
2) The record companies stopped signing innovative grunge bands, they instead flooded the airwaves with a bunch of copy-cats

And the Number one Reason Grunge Died

After the bands were successful and found happiness, they lost the underlying inspiration for their music, so their fans labeled them sellouts.

I totally disagree with you. Grunge musicians never sold out. How did Eddie Vedder sell out, or the dudes from Nirvana. If anything their "inspiration" left them the same stoners they always were. You really dont know what your talking about. oh well

Yeah i think grunge still lives on, and just b.c greenday got new material, dun mean they suck ((MANDIEE)) anyway. you dont have to just stick with one genre of music. who cares if u like the used and slipknot? its music, its a form of freedom. choose what u want.

Posted by monkeyman o'brien u r so flippin right:
half the freakin people 2day listen to whats on the radio and tv. and what said is that the bands that do become on top of mtv count down totally die. like what happen to GreenDay. if u listen to thier old stuff b4 they were big they were all anti-everything. then they got big and they just went downhill. popularity kills people. watch out and listen to ur own da mn music.

Posted by amanda:
ok so we all listen to different music. SO WHAT! like im realy gonna sit here and read all ur lazy ass thoughs. i mean DUDE com'on. like i care if grunge died, i still listen to it. i mean i grow up on Nirvana and GreenDay(when they were good) and others, and i listen to some metal and classical too. the only thing that makes my f*in mad it RAP. i mean wtf ppl. u cant understand a thing they say and when u do its all bout hoes and "bling". i mean do u realy have to make up a word, that sounds like somethin that my computer would make, just to say money. point is that grunge didnt die. nothin died, just some people.

Posted by billy bob thorton:
we messed up any chance we ever had at good music. now we have these little sissy girls whine about every thing will always be alright when every one knows it wont. then u have these freakin' rap people come and are talking about hold-ups and drive-by-shootings or how good their one-night-stand was in bed. not only that but u cant understand a word they r saying. any kind of rock music is the only thing that can keep us going.

Posted by True to Grunge :
Bring back grunge bands. Grunge isn't dead, it's just underground. Look a little closer. We just need another band to come out of the shadows like Nirvana did in the 90's. This generation needs to see fearless pain and originality that doesn't repeat itself every 20 seconds in the song. I only began to see and understand grunge a few months ago in 2004 but I've seen metal bands and punk, I started a grunge band. No one cares if we make it so long as people get the message... Grunge is here to STAY!

Posted by Josh:
I think that most of this is true but another reason is because of the god forsaken crappy hip-hop music becoming popular and mindless kids requesting and flooding the airwave with that rap crap ,blocking grunge from ever reaching kids that were born after or at the end of the generation x timing. But that can be changed. Its making a come back really soon.Grunge maybe on life support but trust me it ain't dead!

Posted by Krista:
Children are starting to listen to 90's bands, playing it off like they have been long time fans when in reality they started listening to Nirvana when their greatest hits album came out. Its disgusting! It gives grunge a bad name. Pree-teens of today dont even know grunge because they havnt experienced it when it was around. They were like one or something in the 90's. its pathetic. All you young kids reading this...go and worship your own damn music...leave ours alone. This is what we all grew up on...grunge and metal. Sorry all you have is hip hop but hey S*it happens!

rock and alternative 90s is my life. i am only 13 well 14 today cuz its my birthday but i grow up on it and ever since my mom found out that i loved Nirvana (all thanx ot my dad) she put me in private skooland we now go to church well only i me and her and i have to play sports. I kinda can tell that shes not a big fan of my music but i don't think that she should worry about my well-being. it drives me crazy and has been for years. i like all kinds of music because its sending a message to people and u don't have to believe it. As far as grunge, it never died and i hope it never will i still listen to it. and i know that radio plays it. Grunge lives!

Posted by Use_Ur_iLLusion:
To say that grunge died with Kurt Cobain died is totally assinine! You simply cannot define an entire genre with a single band, let alone a single person. Granted he did a lot for the emergence of grunge as a counterculture, but he did not do it alone. Think before you waste your time typing people. Moreover, grunge never really died, rather it evolved and gave way to other forms of music, that like grunge touched on similar topics and spoke to similar audiences. I don't really know where I'm going with this, but yea... take from that what you will.

Posted by Guitar-God:
nirvana was not cr*p and is not cr*p cos it still is being played. Nirvana songs are a bit basic but it was and is not about being enthusiastic its about saying i dont give a f*ck. nu-punk/metal is sh*t, thats not f*cking punk, punk is the sex pistols, the ramones, the clash and bands like rancid not sh*tty bands like good charlotte or nething else. i think music has lost all greatness. it used to be good and have impact but now bands pop up every week and fade away in a another week. f*ck the rasmus they suck f*cken useless guitarist

I have never understood the whole labeling into a certain genre.Music is all it is , it is either enjoyable or it isn't .It either has emotion or it is contrived, and if it is contrived no one will keep on listening , if it is truely good , you'll hear it ,or about the band when were all in nursing homes..

So people think Grunge is crap, dead, etc...Ok, antiguy your proberly one of these hip, hop lovers who thinks songs that only take 5 minutes to make on a keyboard and stupid lyrics to go with them are brilliant. Yes people most of nirvana songs had only 3 chords etc,Its not about how any chords you can play its about passion and emotions. Look at larger membered bands or r&b groups, can they make songs better then nirvana?i dont think so, e.g.RHCP, Foo Fighters, Sum 41 etc... yeah there good and proberly sing better but do they put as much effort or passion into it as nirvana and other grunge bands do. At the end of it all grunge will never die because it apart of everyone, even if you dont think it

Posted by smart:
all the people here who think that nirvana sucs grow up ur pathetic if u think that u could have done any better y arnt u famos because ur dorks so stop critisising and right ur own music to put down

Posted by Noah:
If you know anything about Nirvana, you know that their songs were alot deeper than they seemed on the surface. Rape Me wasn't supposed to bring people to accept rape, it was an anti-rape song. It's just people who f*ck up. And to say that you're a moron because u can relate to music's just f*cking stupid.

Posted by Druid:
The Melvins were the best band to come out of that whole scene...Kurt Cobain backed that up. I think it was a stupid music industry invention to take advantage of a very cool music scene in Seattle, give it a nice, neet little genre label (even though alot of the bands did not fit that ridiculous name), and exploit it. There were alot of cool bands that did not jump on that band wagon. Alot of people considered Alice In Chains "grunge". Why, because they were from Seattle? The only thing grunge meant to me at the time was fashion.

Posted by dik:
i just read what some of you had to say and if you have never written a song you really should have no comment. later

Posted by aG:
Yeah, but I write cool articles and you don't.

Posted by Theyr'e:
nirvana was at least a bit original.. although the originality kida faded after they kept repeating themselves.. though this is not the real point antiGUY is completely right, by succeeding the bands lost the source of their inspiration and therefore bands will keep looking back at their own previous work for inspiration and become repetitive

Posted by Holden Johnson:
Grunge died (from the popular front) because the record industry said it was time to die.

Posted by kurt rulllze:
nirvana is the greatesed groep ever an we love them i love him

Posted by TALOS:
nirvana sucked. Theyr'e music was boring, slow-paced, and not melodic; is it not true that any jack ass who picks up a guitar the first weeks already can play 6 nirvana songs? All the singer wrote is senselss hippy words that just rhyme and dumbasses try to relate to it. Then you get some idiots who said that his words were beautiful, passionate, and blah blah blah. Hey name 10 good nirvana songs in 20 seconds. Ha ! you can't do it. The singer had a terrible voice - He had no range, his voice was scratchy, tone deaf, monotoned, and he sounded like crap. After the guy from nirvana dies, all your upcoming girlfriends start claiming to have been raped by a relative in a sort of proud tone.. why is that? True, glam metal sucked, but so did Grunge and anything else that came out on MTV aside from head-banger's ball. in 10 years you Nirvana fans will realize that you were really lying to yourselves. Grunge and Disco had alot in common - you do the math. If you can "totallay relate" to music, then your a metaphorical moron. In my arsehole opinion, Music should astound, frighten, and blow your socks off your asses ( in the case that you brought your asses). Music should be seen like A God. Look up to it in amazement and in awe , but not like you "totally relate to it". So in all down with Glam, Grunge, Nirvana, Curt Cocaine, Rap Metal, Ozzy and Motley Crue. And if your down with the East Side then f*ck you too. F*ck you , die slow, and have a happy Samhain!

Posted by Mr. huh? saying, "My Generation Sucks!":
Kurt Cobain was was a songwriting GOD. Why? It's simple. He was able to pull more emotion, depth, passion, and beauty out of only a few power chords than all those joke(glam)-"metal" bands could ever have hoped to create out of an entire album. When will people learn that delivery is more important than technique in music.

No longer is it a way to get away from the horror of other music and find real inspiriation in some1s music it's soon to tbe the latest fashion...and the fear made it die!

Posted by YOMAMASOFAT:
5. Pearl Jam 4. People realize they cannot sing and cannot play. 3. It's just a trend like most musical genre are. 2. People finally realize that the incoherent babbling does not translate to 'deep and meaningful lyrics' (and it takes a few years for the public to realize this - oh the horror) 1. Besides Nirvana, everything else sucked anyway, they're bound to die

The real reason grunge died: The "big" people in the world recognised the grunge genre as being a huge threat to the western way of life and so hijacked radio, tv etc.. and flooded the airwaves with the pop, nu-metal of the late 90's. They realised that grunge actually had some substance, feared it, and so crushed it.

i dont see why people are saying that grunge died...ok so the grunge revolution has gone out the door, but most people are talking about grunge as if it were a type of music, HARDLY!! the term grunge was used for people of the 90's who followed the grunge revolution, that is that they didnt care what they were being told to do, and did their own thing. i think this is the reason nirvana, pearl jame etc. were collected into this "grunge" category and placed in the music industry. but this was only because nirvana and others merely leading people into the grunge revolution, sang about negative things...about things that werent heard about often. and whats wrong with doing your own thing?

Grunge is a stupid label people got for wearing certain clothes and listening to rock.

the bands that influenced Nirvana like Sonic Youth ,Pixies, Dinosaur Jr etc are the ones who deserved media attention. Nirvana were good, but so are Screaming Trees, Soundgarden etc and they never really got the recognition they deserved

Grunge didnt start w/Nirvana and it didnt end with them. it was just a label anyway. Sub Pop helped make them big and they got called a grunge label but would you call Beat Happening and The Walkabouts grunge? i dont even know/care.

marigold
how can you say than the entire identity of a music genre met its demise when one sole artist died. All of you who hold Kurt Cobain as the "god of grunge" obviously have no idea what youre talking about. grunge is not founded on the shoulders of one man- it didnt start with kurt- and it sure as hec didnt end with him either. grunge was never intended for everyone- it was never expected to be accepted into "the mainstream pop-culture"-it was only by pure luck that nirvana ever rose to meet the fame they did. they were never about fancy lyrics or amazingly techinical chords- it was only ever about the pure passion for making noise, understand that before you take it upon yourself to make half-ass opinions about a sub-culture that supposedly breathed with and for cobain. you might call us deadbeats-stonners-the greasy kid in biology class or whatever the hell kind of names you kids come up with- but obviosly we are still alive and although the numbers might be small- with or without kurt we will continue to evolve-and mabye when the year is right and your music has died-our culture will be exposed again-and you will see that it never was only for nirvana nor did it die with the lagacy of kurt.

pure fanatic
I don't know if about everyone else who thinks this is a worthy topic of disussion, but I think it's a waste of time. Frankly, I think grunge was never meant to be popular, and the fact that it did is part of the reason why most of these sounds became extinguished. I love grunge, and will contine listening to it regardless of the popular belief. The last thing I wanna be is a trendy, and the whole mtv business sickens me.

Jason
NO one like kurt, after lookin threw this web page!

pj
Antigut is dumb. Grunge was the best period of rock in long, long time. Nirvana and Kurt were pretty cool but the best band of that era and of all time is Pearl Jam. Being one of the only bands from the early 90's says alot. Eddie Vedder is the best and nobody will ever top him. Grunge isn't dead till PEARL JAM is dead.

guevara20
I can't hear the same things again and again. All guys who like metal say "the grunge and punk songs haven't many chords so they are n't real music and we must not listen them".I like metal but I can't hear such stupid things.I can remember many metal songs with many chords and unending boring solos without sense that i can't listen.I don't say that all metal songs aren't good. There are many good metal bands with wonderful songs.I 'm just trying to say that we can't judge a song from the number of its chords but from the feelings which we feel when we hear it.Don't forget that the most classic rock 'n roll songs haven't many chords."wild thing" has only 4 chords.what does it mean that?that it isn't good song?that it isn't real music?I don't thing so.sorry for my english. I was never good at english:).NIRVANA RULES

me
It is all the same. It is music, not something to analzy or tear apart. Get over and enjoy what you like. Nirvana and every-other band out there listen or play what they want so why can't we all get along.

THE Nirvana GrRL
OK There is no way that it is as simple as "Kurt Died, Grunge Died." If you people are realy fans of Nirvana then you would realise that Grunge is kept alive by the awesome music that Nirvana produced.. Even if they arent doing it now because Kurt died the point is is that they did do it and came up with good shjt. So what if Kurt used what 3 or 5 cords for most of their songs.. who cares? They didnt.. It was the words in the songs that matter and if any of you took the time to realise this and listen to what they were singing about because it actually meant something which Im sure you probly didnt you would see how much Nirvana Still rock and How GRUNGE IS NOT DEAD.... And never will die... MY WORDS HAVE BEEN SPOKEN! If anyone wants to email me DO IT OK.. lithiumgrrl@nirvanafan.com Luv Sarah :)

hey there, sexy man
Grunge so rules, its not about anti corporations and all that sh¡t, the don't care about politics, they care about making a buck, getting high, singing and playing guitar . No grunge band gives half a f_ck about weaing nice clothes, or saving the whales or abortion, grunge is pure music for the musicians themselves, I think if u wannabe specific grunge is a cross beetween punk and metal .

grunge rules
grunge didn't die f*ckers!

LoDave
Grunge died because it was a record industry creation-kinda like "Britney Spears" or 98*. The industry decided that there was more money to be made on the "boy bands." A few good bands (Well,Pearl Jam,anyway) came out of it, but most of that acclaim was just the industry in the form of the critics patting itself on the back.

Renee
Sadly the only reason why grung isnt as popular as it was at the time is because Kurt is dead and all the little teeny boppers loved him. Now if all the ppl didnt think Kurt was cute would Nirvana have ever made it anywhere?

Brenna
Sure, Kurt may have only played about five chords per song, but they were some pretty damn popular songs. I'd like to see any one of you achieve the fame that Kurt did, then you can bitch about how lame he is.

Metal Wolf
In my view Grunge Rock killed heavy metal and hard rock, I have no respect ofr Nirvana. I think of them as completely over rated band. Heavy metal was about letting the anger out, grunge rock was music about putting all the anger back inside. I find it stupid music, the only grunge band I like is Stone Temple Pilots. f is my sonicnet radio station if anyone wants to go too it.

Once a freak allways a freak
Grunge/Alternative NEVER died it's just not as recognized because people are basing every thing off of apperance. The record companies are supporting the ones they think look the best so they can make money. They're not paying attention to the bands that sound the best if people would step out of this day dream the music world has tried to creat they might actully relize what sounds good and what is there, and acknowledge the fact that it exist and stop listing to a bunch of crapy copy cats who don't even know the meaning of the word of expression which is what music is all about. It is insulting to the music industy to even call people like N'sync a band a band does more than sing, a band actly plays instraments-hence the word 'band'. I've been around since N'sync first appered they have sounded exactly the same since they first came out (except now they have that one song that sound like they have britney in it). N'sync and countless other copy cats are a product of the record company. It is a sad day when a concert is people danceing and lip syncing to a previously recorded song-if you want to see what you'd see at a copy cat concert for less take a walk man and your favorite list of songs a picture of the group of 'singers' and go to a dance recital. You want to see a concert go find a real band who actully sings and plays their music-most of which are 'Alternitive' or 'grunge' and F*ck the rest.

monkeyman o'brien
ok ,heres why grunge died. when kurt died, MTV stopped supporting nirvana. MTV stopped supporting grunge. in case no has ever noticed, the only way any music is considered "alive" and not dead is if its on that da mn MTV. sadly, if no one had ever seen nirvana or any other grunge/alternative rock on mtv then it would have never become popular and be given to a demise as it supposedly did. if everyone would stop believing mtv knows what is the music that everyone should listen to things would be fine. im tired of people folowing that stupid station. its a da mn sick a ss religion. i just hope punk rock never finds its way onto that station. it ruins any shred of credibility any band has. the only reason anyone knocks nirvana is because theyre not popular. how of you people who complain about them now were fans of em when they were popular and on mtv. i bet almost all of you. so pull your heads out of your as ses and find out for yourself what music you actually do like and not what mtv or your so called friends shove down your throat. besides i give more respect to someone on here complaining about grunge rock if they dont like whats on mtv now. thank you. if you have a response email it to me at sexyboyparge@yahoo.com or respond on this page cuz ill be lookin for it

DEATH ON 2 LEGS
It died because lack of substance and longevity...It had no real merit and any of you who think a 3 chord song is something of any signifigance had better stop sniffing so much glue because music is an artform and only an artist can perform it or otherwise it's just a song about deodorant

laugh
kurt cobain was a legend he helped change music for ever and grunge is still around in music today influencing everbody but it is not so ovious and it grunge will come back on top of everything just like with nirvana its just that sombody has to have the effort to bring it back.

Grunge was a label. A simple incarnation of rock. Too many people decided to jump on the bandwagon. Grunge died because the media and wannabees killed it. Kurt's death was probably the biggest factor in it's demise, obviously. It started out as a statement and it was turned into a media frenzy by MTV and posers. Every band at the time was trying to be Nirvana and was claiming they too had the "Seattle sound". Kurt's death was also the last blow in rock's downfall, whether you like it or not, it's true. It didn't completely kill rock, but it was key factor in it's demise. Your Top 5 are obviously not reffering Kurt, but every band that was a carbon copy of Nirvana.

the guy
I liked Nirvana but i didn't care for grunge. It was destined for demise. The only real grunge band to come out of seattle was NIRVANA. But, you people have to admit, GRUNGE was and always will be better than this ROCK/RAP cr@p out there now a days.

Riiiiight, grunge isn't dead. Neither is punk, rock, or disco. It seems like whenever someone's favorite genre stops being as commercially successful, all you hear is, "IT'S NOT DEAD!" If you still go to the local shows and enjoy listening to the music at home, and there's still even one band in your genre that makes GOOD music, it's not dead. less talk more rock

# 1 reason grunge died: IT S@CKED!

Grungerdude
hey f**k all you motherf**kers GRUNGE IS STILL HERE LISTEN AND WHEEP BOYS ROCK AND ROLL DUDES

Zombie Chic
When Kurt Cobain died, so did grunge. It's as simple as that.

Adam
aside from lack of any wondrous musical ability, nirvana managed to turn three chords into something melodic and inspired. it took the wit and brilliant songwriting of kurt cobain, along with twisted arrangements and killer bass to pull it off, and nobody has since come close. grunge was initially a fed up reaction to the pretense and theatrics of glam rock. when it lost its feeling of purpose, it became just another trend, and copy cat bands along with the kind of idiot fans that kurt referred to with "here we are now, entertain us" killed the short lived genre. they failed to see that grunge was not about being suicidal, it was about bringing rock music back down to earth after the eighties got a bit out of hand.

Luxus
All in all is all we all are

jewel
kurt cobain was grunge. He died, it died. End of story. Its buried and not coming back 4 a loooonnng time. Whether that's good or bad, i really don't know

kurt cobain was probably fed up with the fact that he had become what he was against in the first place. Hey, I'm gay too.

sinan
I agree with the number 1 reason because the bands lost what they were supposed to be angry about. Also, I'm gay.

Layla
Grunge was always s*** anyway Kurt or no Kurt.

skid69
When Kurt Died so did the great grunge monster, so just leave it alone because we all know that grunge was the best ting to happen in the 90's!

sublime
Eveyone leave Kurt alone, he was awesome, and s'true, thats when grunge died. Soundgarden s*cked and always will

mbe73
grunge died because Kurt did

Dave
I agree...Grunge died with Kurt Cobain and the demise of Soundgarden

---
I agree with you totally on the number one reason, for some reasons fans just don't seem satisfied once their fan bands become successful and instead of supporting them ditch them.

crackhead
it's kinda true but grunge died with Kurt Cobain. that's what i think and i guess it's kinda true

olly
Grunge was more about the cardigans than the music, people are still doing angry rock well, its just not as fashionable now.

Katie
i think he's right on some things

nire
yeah grunge sux cause they all turned to sellouts. they tried to make a buck and lost all interest in the music. It's not comming back strong but it's evedent in some bands. Coal Chamber and Silverchair RULE!!!

Eagle
The number reason is because the bands were no talents

antiGUY
To EM and Tanja. First off I listen to real music all the time. Second, Denial stands for Don't even notice I am Lying. When you hear that big popping sound it will be your head finally coming out of your ass.

em
i agree w/ tanya p. antiGUY, when was the last time you listened to music

darren
grunge is not on it's way back. Grunge is finished. there is a God!

Naild
The Goo Goo Dolls Grunge????? what are you talking about?? Did you ever listen to anything they put out before "Dizzy"?

heartbreaker
anti-guy is right though. i have three words goo goo dolls

heartbreaker
grunge might have died but, it is on its way back to the top(coal chamber stitk x and more) PANTERA RULES 4LIFE!!!!!!!

Butrik
anna kaikkien kukkien kukkia ja pida paasi kiinni

rat
Anti-guy is right. Grunge sux. It was destined to die even before it was born.

ssz
Thank you Draven

Draven
Actually,if you listen to grunge you probably dont know anything about music.Oh wow, everything song is about suicide, and damn them three chords are tough to master

Dan Sanches
shut up ssz, u don't know anything about music if u think that grunge is that bad.

ssz
The reason grunge died is because people finally came out of their comatose state and realized that it is $hit masked as music

your an idiot

Emma
in my previous statement, i didn't mean that the real grunge fans got sick of it (the music), i meant sick if it (the wannabe kids who started listening to it.)

JC
Good grunge bands? isn't that an oxymoron?

Naild
the Number one reason grunge bands still put out albums today, Not enough money to buy the shotgun and the bullets yet!

Dan Sanches
i think jon is right, any true fan is still into it, and anti-guy is right, too, the posers got signed, and the good bands didn't. if the good bands got signed, then grunge would be where is was in 1990, on top of the world!

metalman
anti-guy is right and Draven's number one reason is right. Grunge had a very weak inspiration if any at all to begin with. It was destined for demise.

john
Emma's almost completely right. Grunge is not dead. It's hiding from the media, and it should be. Because if you get all these wannabes after it, then the real fans will dislike it, and that's what kind of happened. Ok, this may seem like an exaggeration, but Kurt Cobain was like the "Messiah of Grunge". And when he died it kind of went back where it belonged. And anybody who stuck with it were true fans.

Metal Militia
anitGUY knows what he's talking about. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a loser and a salad tosser

tanya.p
anti guy is a tosser. get over it grunge is not dead it's still very alive and kicking. anyone email me on foster@nex.com.au

Draven
The Main Reason why Grunge is Dead...Is it that it completely s*cked and had no shred of musical Talent.Survey SAYS!Number One Answer!I just got 56 points. Now dont get me wrong,I'm not talking about the wrongly place so called "grunge" bands like AIC and Soundgarden. They are both amazing bands with enormous musical talent.I'm talking about Mr3Chord,Kurt Cobain and his seven hundred disciple bands.

Emma
I agree w/some of it, but I think that there were too many little wannabe punk kids who started listening to nirvana and all that, so it almost seemed to become more mainstream and the real grunge fans got sick of it. does that make sense to anyone?

Mike
I think that Kurt Cobain died, it made a big difference, and there is no other band out today like a Pearl Jam, GNR, STP, Alice In CHains, or Metallica. It's some of those groups who are still left who has the only continuos good music out today.

Robert
I think your right. Now all we have is our alternatechnopop bands like Garbage, which kick ass.

Kurt Cobain
If I wasn't dead I would kick your ass

CliMax
up yours antiguy

Drew
That was a little too true to be funny
