Top 5 Artists who should retire already!

A couple of months ago I ran a Top 5 derived from readers posts on one of our message boards. That worked out so well I thought we’d try it again. This time around I asked our regular readers which artists they think have outstayed their welcome and should retire. Read on for their responses. While, my list would have been a little different, it seems a lot of our readers agree on certain artists. If you have someone you’d like to add to the list or disagree with one of the artists listed below then post your response in the Fan Speak section.  Until next time, here is this month’s Top 5 - aG

Top 5 Artists who should retire already!

5) “KISS- Too bad Gene Simmons isn't IN those KISS koffins.” – CrazyBumFungus

They keep saying they are retiring but every few weeks we hear news of a new KISS product or the band playing some special show, or being paid to play a private party. Growing up, KISS was one of my favorite groups (this was after the makeup came off) and I always dreamed of the day they would do a reunion and put the makeup back on. That day did come and it was great to see the old KISS magic live but instead of doing the reunion tour and going out in a blaze of glory the band decided to put out a sub par studio album, launch a zillion marketing schemes and release one greatest hits type package after the other. What respect I had for Gene and Paul went out the window as I watched them grasp at every dollar available. I always thought the music stood on it’s own, but the KISS of today is but a pale shadow of their former selves who are obviously in it for one reason only, to make money off of the fans.

4) “Missy Elliot, nuff said.” – Greenmuse
Greenmuse didn’t even have to explain this suggestion. I wholeheartedly agree Missy should retire before unleashing any more of that noise pollution she calls music on the unsuspecting public!

3)“Backstreet Boys - no longer even remotely resembling "boys" and looking quite frightening I really think it is time guys to give it a  rest (all solo careers by former BSB members should also be stopped dead in their tracks)” – smicdivvy

No need to expand on that, smicdivvy nailed that one perfectly!

2) ”The Rolling Stones!? they should have stopped like 25 years ago! “ – Maxpower324

While many suggested the Stones, Maxpower324 said it best! Here is a legendary band that has setout and succeeded in destroying their legacy with every new tour and album that fails to even remotely measure up to their glory days. When Spin Magazine did their 50 Greatest Bands of All time the Stones landed at a dismal #9. In commenting on why they landed so far down the list, then the expected top 5 spot, Spin said “There was a time -- most of us weren't there -- when it made perfect sense to call the Rolling Stones ‘The World's Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band’ (and if they'd dropped a good album in the past 20 years of trying, they'd be much higher on this list).”  I will point out that Spin is full of shit a lot of the time especially their current Top 40 Artists in Music Today where they name Jay-Z as No. 1 and others like Missy Eliot, OutKast, P.O.D, Sum-41 and Basement Jaxx are in the Top 20…. Scary stuff going on over at Spin but they nailed the reason the Stones popularity has sagged.

And the number one artist who should retire is

Aerosmith – Too Submissions Many To List!
The overwhelming choice when I asked the readers which band should call it a day. Many feel that like the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith is destroying their legacy by continuing on and releasing less than stellar music. Plus their willingness to hook up with pop stars and the like haven’t helped their reputation either.

Honorable or dishonorable mentions who didn’t make the final list:

From smicdivvy

Metallica - Have become an embarrassment to the world of rock and metal.

Cher - The "alternative lifestlye" community will be disappointed but really I think it is time.

Paul McCartney - I really hate to say it but his performance at the Oscars really put it over the edge - when Great becomes Mediocre it is sad

From LithiumBliss
J.Lo
Courtney Love

From Weedo
Metallica should quit before they embarrass themselves even more with all this pop rock.

The following mentioned some artists that made the list but for continuity sake I included their entire top 5 lists.

From Lucy
5. Ozzy Osbourne (does that count as a band)
4. Rolling Stones (nothing works anymore)
3. Guns and Posers (as if they could pass)
2. Elton John (Totally lost it)
1.KISS (HELLO...Fare-freakin-well already)

From CrazyBumFungus
5. U2- Shut up already Bono.
4. Cher- I wonder who's had more plastic surgery, her or my #3 choice.
3. Michael Jackson- Is it just me or does he look like he's about to fall apart?
2. Celine Dion- Does she ever STAY retired??
1. KISS- Too bad Gene Simmons isn't IN those KISS koffins.

Your turn, what do you think? Now you can join in on the fun, submit your picks for the artists who should retire already!

They call you
Who should call it a day?:

Fan Speak:

Bands that should STAY. OZZY OSBOURNE(Hey a$$hole he was in a band name black sabbath, and he still rocks without them. still wish sabbath was still around) Metallica (Suck or not they'll will always rock the $h1t out of everyone) Pink FLOYD (Wish they kick your ass) AND ALL THE OTHER ROCKERS

Posted by mMassacre:
I got one. USHER, TIMBERLAKE, LINKIN PARK, 50 CENT, DNX, HIP HOP, RAP.

Posted by M-Factor:
I just want to add that indeed there is good music on the scene today, ever hear of radiohead? Phish? Incubus? and by the way whoever said coldplay should retire is just speaking with no knowledge of music whatsoever.

Posted by this guy:
Seems like most of you need to worry less about who should call it quits and worry more about your ability to spell. Redirect your focus to school all you little hollywood "know it all's." :)

Posted by hi:
OMFG will someone shoot madonna shes way too old. Her lame try to rap "i drive a mini cooper and i find it super duper"

Posted by Dude:
Nag you silly faggot dicks are for chicks!!!

Posted by Caitlin:
Can I say MARIAH CAREY?!?! Holy F^ck

Posted by BOP:
Guns&Roses definetly...they SUCK.

Posted by Jim:
I don't know, maybe I'm getting old, but just about everyone in today's music scene sucks. It looks like were at the point where another Nirvana will come and destroy. I hope so.

Posted by Smotz:
Jason, you suck at life! bitch!

Posted by samo:
U2?????? come on. U2 is one of the few bands out there who have been out for a good long while that continue to SUCCESSFULLY reinvent themselves. They continue to be relevant in contemporary music. They still have no trouble tapping in that creative pool. How many bands who have been around can do that today? Come on. I challenge any of you all to intellectual point out why U2 should go. Simply saying "they were never good to start with" doesnt work.... sorry. Again if you can intellectual point this out I will respect you and your opinion. Whatever... U2 is a rare band today and that point list is long.

Posted by Nelly:
Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston They suck don't they see nobody is interested in what they have to say anyway its time to retire.

Posted by Jason:
1.Kiss 2.Metallica 3.All NU-metal 3.Michael Jackson (can you even call him a musician anymore or just a freak milking the beatles) 4.Limp Bizkit 5.Korn 6.Billy Corgan

Posted by Druid:
RUSH. as a life-long fan...it's time to hang it up guys.

Posted by Gibbsy:
Tupac - well, i know he is dead and all, but that doesnt stop him releasing a greatest hits style compilation every week or so. Stop it! 2. Blink 182 - its just getting old now. The Rolling Stones - its been said already,i dont think they can destroy their legacy (they were too good for that), but 25 years of mediocrity is wearing thinner than Keith Richards face. 4. Kiss - capitalism taken too far. Gene Simmons and co, stopping grubbing money and do the right think by the band by taking it backstage and putting a bullet in its head. 5. Eminem - no real reasoning for this, the guys obviously at the top of his game and is making millions. I just really dont like him. PS. The living End rock.

Posted by JESSICA:
5. KISS 4. NELLY 3. COLDPLAY 2. PUDDLE OF MUD 1. MICHAEL JACKSON I DON'T LIKE ANY OF THEM!

Posted by Embress:
its already started... but hey, i love the living end, i'm a GREAT fan. BUT remember, everyone is entitled to their opinion...

Posted by spongebob:
"key", what does being gay have to do with bow wow retiring? i think hes a talentless ass as well but at least im not homophobic about it. and the Living End ARE incredibly talented- "me', do you realise that if you say anything bad about the living end, it wil be found and youll have the entire fan base on your back?! :)

Posted by zarps:
'me' you need to get a f*cking brain. The Living End actually have something called 'talent' unlike some bands today. Maybe if you pulled your head out of your ass, you would realise this.

Posted by Rooboy:
Oh please, if "me" knew anything about musical talent and techniques he would relise that The Living End are just that, talent + technical, not too many bands can keep this up each release and make it different each time. Mabey "me" you are tone-deaf and all music sounds the same, and you base judgment on image.

Posted by FightingTiger:
The living end?? whoever the fan 'me' is needs to stop listening to creed and get some taste! The Living End are actually doing something different unlike most current acts, they have a difinate sound and arent recycled rock like others around (the vines). I do take my hat off to creed and nickleback.. they managed to make afew albums using the same sound. A good effort for such unoriginal artists.

Posted by me:
5. living end - come on, they just suck 4. britany spears - shes a joke 3.michael jackson (see above) 2. Avril Lavigne 1. Michael Jackson

Posted by Mike:
Guns&Roses, Sure the H**l not be on this page there the greatest band of all time. Michael Jackson needs to go all Rap and U2(they were never good to start with) By the way Pick need to stay she pretty good.

Posted by Holden Johnson:
Add Michael Jackson and Fred Durst to that very good list.

Posted by Makaveli:
On the entire list of the page, the only one i don't think is bad is Missy Elliot. she's got tallent and skill in what she does. as for everybody else, the only reason theses artists are still making music is because they have a talent for what they do, unlike everybody else which is why you guys probably wont amount to anything in life. Anywayz i also like Nas, but i think that Jay-Z or Gay-Z sucks D*$! and should be stopped along withCash Money.

Posted by blackjuju:
Linkin Park must die and lets get rid off Limp Bizkit and any other loser rap-rock bands. Rap rock and bands who have tongue and nose rings and tatoo's have to go.

Posted by key:
bowwow i just found out hes gay,he said it himself on his fan reviews

Posted by Robbie:
Fockin Linkin Park, P.O.D., Staind, and all those suck-rock-band thinking they're dangerous and bad-to-the-bone. They're just bad. Period. U2 should NOT quit. Walk On is the 2nd best song in 2002, after Imitation of Life (REM forever and ever.). U2 hasn't done anything goog since Achtung, but Walk ON give me hope.

Peral Jam - they just suck now Definatly not Ozzy, his last album is one of his best.

Posted by AliceCooperette:
Ozzy Osbourne. Although he doesn't exactly qualify as a band, he definatly needs to give up. He can hardly sing live preformances, he's falling apart, and all he can write music about is being a 50 year old half dead man. Boo. Three thumbs down. He had to sell out to MTV and let his daughter become The Fat Britney Spears. Maybe he can die and redeam some of his dignity.

Posted by Lis:
U2 should NOT be on this page. Hell, there nineties work is just as good as anything they did in the eighties. Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and Pop (yes, Pop WAS a good album) were all brilliant. And it looks as if they're set to surpass even that. Why would you want a band at the top of its game to go away. *rollseyes* Thought like that suggests you've had more to drink than even say...Bono.

Posted by STOP AREOSMITH FOUNDATION:
i was gonna say aerosmith before i read the article. Im glad people agree with me.

Posted by mel:
sting, have you heard his lame attempt to put hip hop beats (complete with oh yeahs) in his songs?

Posted by Joh:
Adding to my previous message, any artist/band that was popular and is now doing nostalgia tours...

Posted by Joh:
- All Spice Girls except Mel Chisholm - the only one with any talent. - Britney Spears (Too plastic) - Pink (Too negative) - Any dedicated 'Adult Contemporary' artist/band. - N'Sync - Any hip-hop/rap artist who does not use expletives...

Posted by Rashad:
here are some acts that need to call it quits! Dead Kennedys, The Rolling Stones, Oasis, Guns&Roses, Van Halen, Lynard Skynard, Poison, GO-GOs, and any genre of music that spends too much time recycling beats instead of creating new beats and tracks.
