Top
5 Music Films.
When you consider the amount of movies
released every year it is surprising that there isn’t more movies based
on music to chose from. Sure there are a quite a collection of “b” movies
that revolve around a music theme collecting dust at your local video store,
but what I am talking about is great movies. So this month I thought we
could look at five films that involve a music theme. Here are my
top 5 favorites but you can share yours in the fan speak below. Before
anyone says it, I just couldn’t bring myself to put Tommy on the list,
sorry but there are better films to chose from. Maybe it was the Elton
John “Pin Ball Wizard” sequence that turned me off? C’est la vie… here
is the list.
Top 5 Music Films.
5)Help! – Say what you want
about the Beatles and “Beatlemania” but the fab four managed to create
a quirky comedy that included some of their most memorable songs. While
this film wasn’t nearly as good as “A Hard Days Night” as far as the plot
goes, the direction and cinematography was really ahead of it’s time in
the way they mixed film and music, if anything “Help!” became a precursor
to music video. Also I have to mention, “Imagine” – The producers
of this film did an excellent job of piecing together rare behind the scenes
footage of John Lennon captured during the recording of the “Imagine” album
as well as material from his entire career.
4) The Rose – The heartbreaking
story of a rock stars struggles with fame and the rock n roll lifestyle
based loosely on the life of Janis Joplin. A powerful performance by Bette
Midler really helped make this one of the best rock movies ever made.
3)Pink Floyd The Wall –
Despite being one of the darkest and strangest films ever released, the
Wall really did an admirable job of visualizing Pink Floyd’s psychedelic
music and taking us into the twisted imagination of the band.
2)This is Spinal Tap – A
true cult classic. Sure Rob Reiner is a meathead but he did manage to make
one great film in his career. This spoof of a mediocre 80’s metal band
has become one of the best testaments to how screwed up the music business
can be, and it’s funnier than hell to boot!
And
the number one Music Film
is
Almost Famous – Cameron
Crowe’s semi-autobiographical film took us behind the scenes of what it
was really like to be in a struggling rock band in the early 70’s as well
as the fine line some journalist have to draw between friendship and professionalism.
Like most Crowe films, the movie contained a well-balanced plot that was
dramatic, romantic, funny and just an all around great film. For
those who loved the theatrical release, check out the special “bootleg”
DVD version with over 30 extra minutes added.
Honorable Mentions: “Sid and Nancy”,
“The Blues Brothers”, "Still Crazy", “Velvet Goldmine”, “Amadeus”, “What's
Love Got to Do with it?”, “Purple Rain”, “The Temptations” (mini
series), “Rock Around the World” (pioneering rock n roll film), “La Bamba”
and “Lady Sings the Blues”, “Bird”, “The Buddy Holly Story”, “The Idol
Maker”, “Eddie and the Cruisers” and “Grace of My Heart”.
Your
turn, what do you think? Now you can join in on the fun, submit your picks
for the best music movies of all time.

"That Thing You Do" was a great one on the inner duels of a rock band with just a single hit by Tom Hanks. I was expecting much more from "almost Famous" though, somehow was let down.

Since I'm an 80's brat, can't neglect my 2 favorites. Trick or Treat/Fastway/ its heavy metal w/ some nightmare. And the Best Damn Vampire movie ever made: The Lost Boys. Echo&Bunnymen's(F'upd choice for a name), cover of the Doors,"People are Strange" is perfection. And the Sax Guy, whew, made me sweat as a teen. LOL. Plus all the BeOootyful Babes, all us girls drooled over. You know you did too. Honorable mention: IwtVampire, and Queen of the Damned, love the gothesque/heavy metal sound. Excellent choice of music/lyrics. Best scene(to me),Beach w/Gypsy/Violin. Can you say "Hauntingly Lovely".
Posted by IvyGenie:
CrossRoads w/Ralph Machio. Blues mixed w/ Heavy Metal Guitar, com'on, it gives me chilly bumps just thinkin' about it. Next: A Knight's Tale. Liked, cuz of Queen & the big letdown from the trailer, Heart, I was like where's my song? Rockumentary wise: Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. Loved,Loved IT!

In what universe is Help! better than Hard Day's Night? Both the movie and the soundtrack of Hard Day's Night are head and shoulders above Help! in my opinion. But then, I have a bit of an attachment to Hard Day's Night given that it was the first Beatles I owned. maybe I'm just biased. but, even with that disclaimer, Hard Day's Night should have been #1.

Posted by Hearditall:
Technically, it wasn't a music movie, but how bout South Park? That had some funny ass songs. Stuff you want to memorize.
Posted by ToolBox:
The best soundtrack of alltime is "Singles" All the songs kick ass...but unfortunately the movie isn't as good as the soundtrack...usually happens that way.
Posted by Forrest Gabitsch:
"Trick Or Treat"! Fastway, baby!
Posted by BUTCH:
p.s.--O Brother wasn't all that bad, either, when it comes to soundtracks. Some of the songs blow goats but the first track "Po' Lazrus" is solid faking chain gang gold.---The Lomax's (the father and son team who recorded the song by James Carter way back in 1959) also discovered Leadbelly and countless other sharechropper/prison farm musical wizards in the 30's and 40's. Great stuff. Go to the Library of Congress or the Smythsonian...they got most of it all. I know I'm being obscure. But it is very honest music. A million times better than half the shyt released today.
Posted by BUTCH:
Oh, soundtracks: Dead Man Walking, Big Bad Love, and Streets of Fire.
Posted by EY YO:
He didn't leave out Spinal Tap moron.
Posted by Justanothervictim:
Two things. 1) How could you leave out "This is Spinal Tap"? 2) Don't forget Resident Evil's soundtrack(the movie).

I forgot about Last Action Hero. Good soundtrack;Queensryche, AC/DC,Big Head Todd and the Monsters...

Almost Famous was defintly a grade A movie. But what about Airheads and SLC Punk? Those movies both rocked hardcore.

And another great movie soundtrack: The Graduate - awesome Simon & Garfunkel

Music movies: Saturday Night Fever and Grease

Kingin... two points.. Bette was a singer long before that film, working on the New York club scene (and yes it was the gay clubs that first took to her) two)see has a lot more credibility and talent than j.lo, acting and otherwise. While her music doesn't do it for me, she has a lot more credibility than j.lo does and isn't out pushing Bette clothing lines.
Posted by slash:
almost famous is without a doubt the best!
Posted by KinginCrimson:
Heh I like how you think Joe. The Rose???? No, I'm sorry Anti-guy. You're rant about J. Lo was good but hell, Bette Midler almost has the exact same story as her.. Starred in a movie about a famous, female, dead, singer. Then continued on as an actress and a "music artist", And actually believes she has a music career and an acting career.
Posted by joe:
the best movie soundtracks ever? Maximum Overdrive and Last Action Hero.
Posted by BUTCH:
What about "Immortal Beloved". Beethoven was the first rock star of recorded times.-"Jesus Christ: Superstar" deserves some mention, however bad. Give me your eye lashes...

two more i can think of right off the top of my head.. "Basketball Diaries" and "SFW".. both great movies that featured Soundgarden on the soundtrack (as did "Lost Angels" with Beastie Boy Adam "Adrock" Horovitz and Amy "i was HOT as hell as Brendan Fraser's gf in 'Airheads'" Locane).. the song used in that flick was "Get On the Snake" from the album "Louder Than Love".. which consequently was also playing in the background of a scene in Pantera's Vulgar Video.. how's that for absolutely useless knowledge? lol) -0

Soundtracks? Definately Singles. Best ever.
Posted by LadyMuck:
Almost Famous was great, the Doors should absolutely be on this list. And why hasn't anyone mentioned one of my faves: Crossroads. C'mon, it's Steve Vai representing satan, how cool is that?
Posted by DUKE:
Where is TOP GUN???This film has the most kickass music...listen to the topgun album..its the best!
Posted by Lunargoose:
Favorite music movie of all time: "Wild In The Streets." I am not sure if many videos of this even exist anymore, but it came out in 1968, and it was about this young rock singer who used his band and songs to get the voting age lowered to fourteen, then went down to Washington D.C. with hordes of young hippies and spiked the water supply with LSD so he could be president. Richard Pryor played the drummer in his band. Good stuff.

i like the Detroit Rock City soundtrack.
Posted by Neil Diamond:
Thanks ZerO! I'm kind of getting back to my stoner ways, don'tya' know! BROTHERS!!!
Posted by pick:
'Dracula 2000' had a great soundtrack, as did 'Strangeland.' But I would have to pick 'Singles' over 'The Crow' because 'The Crow' album had some real stinkers on it, whereas every 'Singles' song is great. In fact, I need to go buy that album again!
Posted by SubXavier:
Oh, yeah, Empire Records is a good movie.
Posted by tincho:
have you thought about empire records???? that was a great one

heh.. i am not a pregnant goldfish, and what the hell's a prat?.. very odd Neil Diamond, very odd.. -0
Posted by Neil Diamond:
You silly twits forgot Jazz Singer!! What other music film features both myself and one of the greatest actors of all time, Laurence Olivier. You stupid prats!
Posted by Zer0:
i would have to agree, Singles is THE all time greatest soundtrack, although the Original Crow soundtrack is close behind there.. if not tied with it.. but you know, the Singles soundtrack really should've had the demo version of spoonman on it, i mean yeah, i have it anyway.. but it WAS in the movie after all.. (during a sequence where a flyer or a poster is being hung on the wall, you hear Cornell on a fuzzed up acoustic playing the main riff to that song.. back in what? 92? that rocks.. heh.. i also have the original demo version of FOBD, which is really cool.. ).. but yeah.. that song should've been on there, and i'm a geek.. -0
Posted by LithiumBliss:
"Fear Of A Black Hat" was funny as hell, but it was definitely Spinal Tap for the rap scene. Doc's right, "Blues Brothers" ruled. The best soundtrack: "Singles"
Posted by firewalker:
total eclipse of the heart(or anything that doesn`t give you a good kick in the ass when you hear it)
Posted by BK:
"Fear Of A Black Hat" was a very funny movie."CB4" is another funny one.
Posted by Randy:
"Fear Of A Black Hat"..this one's probably hard to find for a rental and I think the video is out of print, but do your best to see this movie. It's a comedy that spoofs rappers and rap groups. Anyone else ever see this?
Posted by aG:
Actually Rocky I think I would pick Help! over A Hard Days Night. Come on it had "Hide Your Love Away", "Help!" and "Yesterday" on it. Then again Magical Mystery Tour and Let it Be were soundtracks too and they would be some steep competition between all of those and the Anthology CD's. But there are a lot of great soundtracks Forest Gump, Purple Rain, The Wall, The Song Remains the Same, just to name a few. But rest assured last year when Entertainment Weekly did a top 100 soundtrack list, A Hard Day's Night was no. 1.
Posted by Rocky Racoon:
Maybe another top 5 could be Top 5 soundtracks of all time , that way we could get A hard days night in there at # 1
Posted by soad925:
anything britney, nsync, etc....
Posted by RussGoodwin:
Sid and Nancy should have made top 5, Oliver Stone's "The Doors" should have as well. It's electrifying like all of his films and it centers around one of the greatest and ahead of their time bands ever
Posted by RussGoodwin:
any song performed, written, produced, or involved with Creed

Posted by Flounder: What the Fuk happened to "The Rocky Horror

opera. You couldn't ask for a bigger cult movie. (Oh, and I agree, continue
ignoring the biggot)

Posted by Lucy: BK, don't respond to this little prick.
He came to this site and purposely started BS just to get some attention.
I mean really...he uses two obviously stupid things in his name. Probably
just some fat, pimple faced seventh grader who got beat up by some petite,

Zer0: Airheads!.. that would've been my number
one.. but i'm a geek.. lol.. and yeah.. i would've included Singles too,
just for all of the KILLER FUN cameos, like the scene w/Cornell and Matt
Dillon where the stereo blows out the car windows.. lol! yet another genius
Cameron Crowe movie... and speaking of crow.. what about The Crow?.. i
mean Eric Draven WAS a musician after all and it was on HBO-Z the other
night, and i just had to stay up and watch it.. i know i'm a lame-a$$,
cuz i don't have it on vhs yet.. i know, i know.. but i do have the Evil
Dead trilogy on tape.. so there.. lol -0

one of my all time fav movies. So is This is Spinal Tap. Not a bad list
there.
Posted by
adaj7: Does Bill and teds excellent adventure
count?
Posted by
Rocky Racoon!: My fav music movie is A Hard Days night,
which is also my favourite album of all time
Posted by
Sven: Ok... just two films that should have
been included (at least on honourary list) #1: Yellow Submarine! #2: Detroit
Rock City (sure it's about kiss, but what else features the line "mom,
i just lost my virginity in a confessional box."
Posted by
pick: 'SLC Punk' isn't bad either.
Posted by
aG: Damien and Ms Q please forgive my oversight
- The Commitments should have been included and Hard Core Logo was great
it just slipped my mind when I put the honorable mentions together. But
you guys covered them so isn't fan speak great?
Posted by
Scott Stapps Ego: "The Commitments" was great but I defenately
agree on "Almost Famous". "A Hard Days Night" should be on the list too.
Posted by
Damien: Oh man, you forgot two of the greatest
music films ever made! "The Commitments", about a bunch of irish dudes
starting a soul band (even if you hate soul check it out, it's absolutely
hilarious)and "Hard Core Logo", a dark comedy movie about a canadian punk
band imploding. Both of these are hilarious and extremely well written.
Coming from this site I'd expect these to at least get an honorable mention!!!
Posted by
BK: This Is Spinal Tap is one of my favorite
movies.I've watched it about 10 times now and I still laugh every time.As
for the rest,I didn't like "The Wall"."Almost Famous" was pretty good.I
liked "Purple Rain" as well. One film that I really liked that wasn't listed
was "Airheads".I guess it classifies as a music film.
Posted by
Ms.Q: I would add to that list the movie "The
Commitments". For anyone that loves the good oldschool Soul music,it's
a must have. Also, it's just a great, funny movie about one young man's
dream of putting together the ultimate Soul band. It's set in Ireland so
the accents are pretty heavy. Pay attention though, it's quite entertaining
and different. I Love it.
Posted by
pick: Absolutely not. 'The Wall' is the best
music-based movie and is one of the better films ever made. Period.
