MUSICFEST AWARDS

MUSIC VISIONARY AWARD: KEITH MORRIS
Opening Night: Thursday, May 3

Born in Hermosa Beach, California, Keith Morris and guitarist Greg Ginn formed Black Flag during the late '70s, quickly making a name for themselves with their genre-defining, original sound. Black Flags first release (Nervous Breakdown) is often credited as having single-handedly put the L.A. Hardcore sound on the map. Leaving the band in 1979, Morris went on to join The Circle Jerks. He continued to churn out confrontational punk music into well into the late 80s, when the band broke up.

Keith Morris was stricken with a bout of bad health in the late 90s. The music community rallied to his support with a host of benefit shows. Ultimately recovering, Morris came back on the scene with his band Midget Handjob, as well as working and playing with legendary musicians such as Henry Rollins and Bad Religion.

Keith currently works as an A&R manager at V2 Records while continuing to perform with Circle Jerks. Hes recently been featured in the My Chemical Romance song "Hang 'Em High" and the Wrangler Brutes song "Driving", as the voice of God.

s***, man. Who are we to argue?

Silver Lake Film Festival is damn proud to present the first ever Music Visionary Award to Keith Morris; a testament to his independent mind and total musical domination.

LATINA MUSIC PIONEER AWARD: ALICE BAG
Cinco de Mayo: Saturday, May 5

Born and raised in East L.A., Alice Bag began singing at the age of 8, dubbing cartoons into Spanish and recording the theme songs. By the time she left junior high she had become fascinated with the glitter rock scene and music by T. Rex, Bowie and the New York Dolls. In 1976, she and Patricia Rainone began auditioning musicians for an all-girl punk band: The Bags were born.

Featured in the seminal 1981 film THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION by Penelope Spheeris, and notable for having two strong female members, The Bags were one of the first and most popular bands of the early L.A. punk scene. After the breakup of the band, Alice went on to perform in many different groups, finally joining the pop-punk group Cholita! with Vaginal Davis in the late 80s. Subsequently, she formed the acoustic group Las Tres, specifically to perform original songs written from a Chicana perspective. The group was a critical and local favorite and led to a spin-off project, Goddess 13, which became the subject of a PBS documentary.

Alice took a break from writing and performing when her daughter as born in the mid-90s. Soon realizing that this role alone was not completely fulfilling, she started Stay At Home Bomb - an all female punk outfit whose music addresses domestic roles, images of femininity and every womans burning desire to kick ass onstage.

In honor of her continued challenges to the male-dominated worlds of punk and rock, Silver Lake Film Festival is honored to present Alice with the 2007 Music Pioneer Award.

SPIRIT OF SILVER LAKE AWARD: JOHN DOE

John Doe was the co-founder, songwriter, vocalist, and bassist of one of America's most acclaimed alternative rock bands, X, and while he continues to write and record new material, he has also carved out a reputation as a busy and well-regarded character actor. Born in Decatur, IL, but fascinated by beat poetry and eager to hone his skills as a writer, John moved to Venice, CA, in 1976; early the next year, John adopted the stage name John Doe and began dipping his toes into Los Angeles's burgeoning punk rock scene. The next year, X was born; which blended the power and speed of punk rock with the melodies and accents of rockabilly, blues, and roots rock, all coupled with Doe and Exene Cervenka's hard-edged but literate lyrics about California's underclass. X quickly earned a reputation as one of the strongest bands to emerge from the American punk rock scene. As X's popularity in Los Angeles grew, the band began attracting the attention of a variety of filmmakers. Penelope Spheeris featured X in her seminal documentary about the LA punk scene, THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION, and the band recorded the title song for Jim McBridges remake of Jean-Luc Godard's BREATHLESS. The band split up in 1993 but reunited for a series of live shows in 1998 and tours periodically; their latest album was 2005 Live In Los Angeles, recorded at the House of Blues. Doe also has a vibrant solo career: Freedom Is... was released by the SpinArt label in 2000, the semi-acoustic Dim Stars, Bright Sky appeared on Artists Direct in 2002, and the subtle but aggressive Forever Hasn't Happened Yet arrived via Yep Roc in 2005.

But John Doe has also had a vibrant acting career along with his musical efforts. In 1985, Doe landed his first acting role in BORDER RADIO (directed by Allison Anders, Kurt Voss and Dean Lent). Two years later, he was cast in Oliver Stones SALVADOR and Wayne Wangs neo-noir drama SLAM DANCE. Since then Does roles have run the gamut in a variety of films PURE COUNTRY, WYATT EARP, GREAT BALLS OF FIRE, BOOGIE NIGHTS, and THE GOOD GIRL. He also had recurring roles on the Fox Network series Roswell and HBOs Carnivale.

MUSIC DOCS AND MOCKS
Curated by Saskia Wilson-Brown
MusicPass & Festival Pass accessible; ticket options at the door

It is with no small amount of pride that we emphatically state that nowhere in America is the music scene so vibrant and innovative as in LAs Eastside. Incubated in clubs like Spaceland, the Echo, Silverlake Lounge and The Smell, indie bands, Chicano rockers, hip-hoppers, drag performers and folk singers all coexist and work together in the neighborhoods surrounding Silver Lake.

Music Docs and Mocks celebrates the freeform musical innovation and heterogeneity that marks our neighborhoods through a series of films about and by musicians showing a helluva lot of innovation.

The nine programs include films from such luminaries as Academy Award-nominated actress Ronnee Blakley and legendary filmmaker Wim Wenders, music icon Les Claypool, the fiercest queen Jackie Beat, first-time filmmakers Austin Young and Barry Pett, viewer-created content from Current TV, and much, much more.

Bands such as THE VACATION, WIRES ON FIRE, THE SHARP EASE, AUTOLUX, 400 BLOWS, and MIDNIGHT MOVIES provide exhilarating performances that prove rock n roll can still be a raw, moving, and soul shaking experience.

Enjoying a resurgence of popularity late in her life, Brooks was signed to Virgins Point Blank Records in her 80s, receiving in her final years the recognition and audiences she had been searching for throughout the fits and starts of her 50 year career. "The kids came in there every night to here me cuss 'em out," Brooks says. And they loved it! From cooking dinner and singing at friends houses, to her last nightclub performance at Michael's Room on Vermont St. in Los Angeles, Queen of the Boogie is a movie eight years in the making, and presents the personality and voice of the legend, Hadda Brooks.

Both a document of the thrill of live performance and a poetic elegy to a legendary landmark: New York's recently-closed CBGB punk club, SONIC YOUTH: DO YOU BELIEVE IN RAPTURE? transcends the traditional music video to create a impressionistic tribute to the memory of all the great shows we've all ever been to. A short, sharp shock of a documentary about experience, atmosphere, memory and place disguised as a music video for a legendary band in its own right Sonic Youth. What more conceptually appropriate tribute to CBGB could there be?

I PLAYED IT FOR YOU
USA, 1985, 71 mins.
DIRECTOR/PRODUCER: RONEE BLAKELY
** Q&A with director

A hallucinatory and rarely-seen documentary concentrating on singer and Academy Award-nominated actress Ronee Blakelys 7-year marriage to legendary German filmmaker Wim Wenders. Rueful and intensely personal, I Played It for You is shot in a variety of film gauges, and blurs the line between what is reality and what is contrived on a near-constant basis, alternating between home movies shot by Wenders, improvised dream and fantasy sequences, and videos of Blakley working with her two bands. Wenders appears as a tall enigmatic stranger named Howard in a curious fragment of the film that he co-directed. Mostly, though, he is himself, much as Ms. Blakley is herself, in this heady, enigmatic look at a woman, a relationship and a time.

HIGH AND DRY profiles the history of Tucson, Arizona's eclectic music scene. The past two decades have seen a number of singular talents emerge from Tucson, including Giant Sand's Howe Gelb, who has been called "the godfather of the alt-country movement," seminal blues slide-guitarist Rainer Ptacek, and original cow punk Al Perry. The city has also spawned popular acts, including Calexico, the Supersuckers and Machines of Loving Grace. Some of these bands reached the big time but self-destructed under the pressure of a music career for which they just weren't ready, while others still make a successful living from their music without the support of a major label or the mainstream music industry. HIGH AND DRY tells these musicians' stories, while giving insight into the choices they made along the way. Drawing upon rare archival material, as well as live performances and exclusive interviews with band members, the film provides a unique view of Tucson and its music scene. More than just a whos who of Tucson music, HIGH AND DRY is a film about success and failure and what those terms really mean in the music business and in life. Featuring Calexico, Bob Log III, Giant Sand, The Pork Torta, Al Perry, Rainer, Sand Rubies/Sidewinders, and Supersuckers.

JOHN CAGE'S ONE11 with 103
GERMANY/USA, 1992, 90 mins.
DIRECTOR/PRODUCER: HENNING LOHNER
PHOTOGRAPHER: VAN THEODORE CARLSON
Presented by Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE)

John Cage created his only feature-length film in the year he died. A sublime performance for camera person and light, One11 is a film without subject, in black and white, composed of images of the chance-determined play of electric light. The final impression is of another, timeless place - freely roaming the clouds or, perhaps, under the sea. Cage said of this work, "Of course the film will be about the effect of light in an empty space. But no space is actually empty and the light will show what is in it. Each of the films 17 parts is based on approximately 1200 random operations devised by a computer that determines how the lighting is controlled and the movements of a crane-mounted camera. The result, aided by the distinguished cameraman Van Theodore Carlson, is a film entirely without plot or actors, which Cage hopes will enable viewers to find for themselves.

Cages orchestral work 103 musically accompanies One11. Like the film, 103 is 90 minutes long, divided into 17 parts - its density varies from solos, duos, and trios to full orchestral tuttis. This opus has two distinct soundtracks for large orchestra to accompany the film: one taken from the premiere of the piece by the prestigious WDR Sinfonieorchester Kln of the German Radio in Cologne, the other by the Spoleto Festival Orchestra.
