(Gibson) To mark its 45th anniversary, the Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat album is getting a massive box set treatment. Originally released in 1968, the album is regarded as seminal for is sonic explosiveness, and was a key inspiration for such bands as Sonic Youth and Television.

The three-disc set, scheduled for release December 3, will feature remastered versions of both the original stereo and mono mixes, plus unreleased outtakes and alternative versions of several songs.

Among the bonus tracks are five previously unreleased tracks from John Cale's personal copy of the album. An unearthed live show, recorded April 30, 1967 at the Gymnasium in New York City, will comprise the Disc Three.

Original Velvet Underground members Lou Reed and John Cale helped select the material. "No one listened to it," Reed told Rolling Stone. "But there it is foreverthe quintessence of articulate punk. And no one goes near it." more on this story
