(Radio.com) Sam Smith debuted the "saddest song" he's ever written on Monday on Beats1 Radio. The new track, "Drowning Shadows," will appear on an upcoming special deluxe edition of Smith's multi-platinum album In the Lonely Hour.

Speaking with host Zane Low, Smith said he wanted to get back to his songwriting roots. "This is the saddest song I've ever written, and probably the least radio friendly [song] that I've ever written," he said. "I wanted to remind everyone where I come from as a songwriter and what my intent was when I made this album."

Before appearing on the show, Smith posted a photo to Instagram with the caption, "Brace yourself. It's a sad one. But I'm very proud of this song. It's insanely personal to me." Read more and listen here.
