Great Northern - Trading Twilight for Daylight Review

by Sherrill Fulghum

.
Great Northern was formed when two long time friends from the Los Angeles area - Solon Bixler and Rachel Stolte - got together with Doug Latter and Ashley Dzerigian in 2005. Bixler who is the son of a classical music composer and conductor followed in his father's footsteps only in a different format. Still the Bixler senior's influences are apparent in the musical progressions and chords. Great Northern's music contains more than the typical I-IV-V progressions found in most rock music.

Great Northern is listed as alternative music artists. I sometimes wonder who it is that classifies music as one kind or another. When they (whoever they are) lists Great Northern as Alternative; an alternative to what? Great Northern is not a mainstream rock band to be sure; they lean more toward the musical styles of bands like Iceland's Sigur Ros or The Coast or Madrid from Canada - more on the line of new age pop or ambient rock. The biggest difference between Great Northern and some other ambient rock bands is that Great Northern's pieces include English lyrics.

Great Northern's "Trading Twilight for Daylight" is their debut album but it will not be their last - it is only the beginning. Great Northern shows on the album of 10 tracks that they have the musical style to please a wide variety of fans and the talent to be around for the long haul.
