Kitchen sink songs are what Ozomatli specializes in. In any given song, you can expect to hear influences from hip-hop, Latin, and ska. And somehow, they bring it all together seamlessly. In that regard, they are similar to Yerba Buena.
This album doesn't have the political messages you can find on some previous Ozomatli albums. (Unless they are in Spanish and I just didn't understand them). Don't Mess with the Dragon seems more about making music for a good time. This is an album you might want to put on when you're having a party because it will make your guests want to get up and move. Like "Magnolia Soul," for instance. This funky tune is the very definition of a party song. The soca-influenced "La Temperatura" is another one that will make folks want to get up and move.
The album ends with "La Segunda Mano." The rapid-fire flow of this song reminds me a lot of Villebillies.
"Don't Mess with the Dragon" is a high-energy album with an array of influences and a sea of sound. If you are already an Ozomatli fan, you won't be disappointed. If you are looking for some good party music, this is an album you'll want to check out.
