Jay Nash - The Things You Think You Need Review

by Gary Schwind

.
Jay Nash is an LA-based singer-songwriter whose vocals are reminiscent of Mark Stuart (Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash). His overall style is one part Gram Parsons and one part Grant-Lee Phillips. The opening track "Sweet Talking Liar" features mandolin and organ in addition to the standard lineup. It, like the rest of the songs on the disc, is a well-crafted song.

Most of the tunes are very mellow. They cover such topics as closing bars, screwing up relationships, and seeking forgiveness. There are a couple uptempo tunes ("Hard Lesson" and "No Stars") that will get the toes tapping. "Hard Lesson" features some solid harmonica I wouldn't mind emulating. "Forgive Me" is a nice bluesy closer to a fairly solid disc.

While all the songs are put together very well, I wouldn't say that any of them really stuck with me. Still, I think Nash is a talented songwriter who will probably do very well for himself.
