Negativland - Thigmotactic Review

by Eric Loranger

.
Not only do I enjoy goofy lyrics and musical senses of humor, but I admire and respect them. When Meat Puppets and Blood Brothers fit such insane concepts into really serious riffs and melodies, it has as much meaning to me if not more than whiny self pitying love songs or odes to pretty girls. Negativland's blunt lyrics are almost interesting "Richard Nixon died today, I guess he was okay. He was the president everyone hated," but mostly they make you wonder why your high school garage band never made it big time. Holy s*** somebody made money to write this record?

There's a lot of potential, but it's not all realized. Some of this stuff is funny, but other parts are just pretty stupid like the repeated phrase in "Lying on the Grass": "I wish that I could kiss your ass!" I know Ween isn't always 100% clever (they wouldn't want to be) but this s*** makes Weird Al Yankovich lyrics look like SAT reading material. Musically they've got some good stuff going, but they need to focus that and make a few great songs, instead of 17 sort of okay songs.

On a lot of these tracks there are good ideas that just get overcluttered by idiotic production flourishes. "By Truck" for example, the breathtaking ode to milk transportation from factories to grocery stores (seriously) is essentially a few strummed chords that would have been a neat folky tune if there weren't spaceship blips whizzing all over the place. And then "It's Not a Critique" just straight up sounds like Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean". This is a critique: drop one tab less of acid before you re-enter the studio, dudes.

"Influential You" is a good song because it's not so damn polluted with production, and it has a catchy guitar line. If everything on Thigmotactic sounded like this track, it'd be infinitely better, but my guess was that they'd had this track in mind when they went into the studio and then bulls***ted the rest. Simple solution: The repeat function on your Itunes comes in handy right here.

There's no substance here. When the Dickies would clash totally goofy lyrics with some catchy, even twisted music they had a knack for how much of either side to put into the mix. This stuff is just fart noises and elevator music with "There's A Wocket in my Pocket" read over the top. Negativland have had a few decent moments in the past, but unfortunately this is not one of them. Sorry guys! But I hear The Wiggles are looking for tourmates on the Chuck E Cheese Fest.
