Silversun Pickups - Remixes Review

by J. Simpson

.
Remixes is a 6 song E.P. put out by the Silversun Pickups consisting of revised renditions of 2 of the tracks off their successful debut CD Carnavas. The 2 songs would be "Little Lovers So Polite" with 2 versions and "Lazy Eye" with 4 different versions. My favorite depiction of "Lazy Eye" off this disc would have to be Jimmy Tamborello's first version which is the lead off track. It highlights Brian Aubert's eccentric vocals as it seems to have a slightly stripped down feel. Both versions of "Little Lovers So Polite" sound like house music you'd expect to hear at a club but if I had to choose, Greyarea's version would be my pick for that song.

I have never been a big advocate of remixing good songs but being a fan of Silversun and being familiar with Silversun's first album I was very curious in the type of sound that would come out of this disc and the direction the different musicians would take the tunes. I found that all in all the songs aren't too bad with all their added beeps, pulses, electronic noises and differed tempos that are massaged in from the initial recordings, the songs don't stray too far off course. (yes there is a but coming)

But, I have to be honest in saying that in my opinion the original versions of these songs are just plain better, and I would have to recommend getting Silversuns first album Carnavas first (if you haven't already got it) then when you become a fan, pick up Remixes and you can judge for yourself.
