Temposhark - The Invisible Line Review

From the country that creates the best pop music in the world (Britain) comes a new band that is about to enjoy a long shelf life. Temposhark is a duo made up of vocalist Rob Diament and keyboardist / programmer Luke Busby, with both doing the songwriting.

The Invisible Line is electro-pop that sounds remotely like Soft Cell with crunch synth riffs but Diament's vocals are higher and more engaging, sort of in the Pet Shop Boys area. From the first few cuts, I thought this record was going to be a straight dance-fest --- pure club fodder. The second half of the record, however, is fairly varied.

The cello/violin strains of "Don't Mess With Me" kick off the set and the tension builds nicely within the song. This is the only one that doesn't fully resonate with me though. The song goes places and sounds like it's going to be something but I find parts of it annoying. I was ready to fast forward through the record but once "Joy", the second cut, takes off, I was hooked. The undeniable energy helps propel the mighty hook of the chorus and Diament sounds terrific. That leads into "Blame" and once again a wicked hook snags you in with all the might of Jabba the Hutt.

The band collaborates with one of my faves Imogen Heap for a slinky duet in "Not That Big" that works well. Diament and Busby show their wry side with some sly lyrics, particularly in "Little White Lies", where the vocalist sings "Don't believe everything you read. Yes, I'm married but I left my wife.at home. A little white lie never hurt anyone."

The last few cuts take a more moody, bent than the party-oriented first half. In particular, the awesome closer "Winter's Coming" is just a beautiful piece of work. With the production courtesy of Guy Sigsworth (Frou Frou), the cut is slightly Bjork-ian, with a healthy dose of Imogen.

Overall, this is an amazing record that is not just disposable fluffy pop. The songs are strong and the rendering is skillful. Highly recommended!
